121F (49.4C)? Yeah, that can't be right. Thermometer was in the sun for a while. I rested here and later it was 107F (41.6C) which makes more sense. Most of the time it was 108 to 110 while walking.

The hike went well. I took 1.5 gallons (5.6 liters) of water in my pack and canteens and 1 gallon in the truck. I froze a gallon of the water I carried so it was nice and cool. I saw pedestals, ants, bees, an interesting formation, flowers, lizards, and dunes. I'll post a link when photos are on my website.

Ok, I'm giving these (link) more respect than "scary giant wasp" level. I see them sometimes while out hiking. Folks around here think of them as harmless since no one reports being stung and they aren't aggressive toward people. Now I read that they score a top rating of 4 on the insect pain scale. Fortunately their sting just lasts a few minutes. Then a new customer told of being stung by one.

In my line of work you'd think I'd been stung or bitten by everything but other than itchy ants I've only had one bee sting while working.

I opened a valve box (one of those green boxes you see buried in the ground housing sprinkler system components) at a job recently.
There was a burrow in the sand big enough for a mole, but what came out was one of these instead:

Needless to say, I was done working in there pretty darn quick.

Read up on them later, but being allergic I wasn't taking any chances.

I'm making extra money since the warm Autumn has kept the grass growing. Thinking like a "poor" guy (by American standards) I bought myself an early Christmas present though I should've saved that money. I have a GTX 1060 video card for gpu rendering. Daz studio is still being updated to use it for Iray so I haven't tried it on renders yet. I think Blender can use it now. Test programs score about 5 or 6 times as fast as my GT 640. If you want a 1060 note that the 3GB versions have fewer cores than the 6GB ones.

Getting one turned into a "comedy of errors". The plan was that my friend near a store would go there and purchase a 960 or 970 at an in-store only super bargain price with a rebate and he might get a veteran's discount. Well, everything went wrong. He even mailed it to wrong address. It became humorous. All good though. Blazing fast and regular price is cheap enough.

EDIT: 11-2-16 I tried a beta version of Daz Studio with Iray. Test done with Earth Rover scene.

Well that is unfortunate. I signed up for Vimeo to put my videos and animations there. Guess what? I cannot upload anything without allowing a script called "google.com" to run. I noticed a multitude of other google scripts too. So leaving Youtube and going to Vimeo is not an escape from google. Google is evil. Deleted the Vimeo account.

Looking at the source code it looks like it's for tag management and ad serving, which, like horseshit, is everywhere. If you want to avoid this sort of thing, turn off your computer, unplug it, and then smash it thoroughly with a sledgehammer. They are probably also checking to see that you aren't just re-serving up youtube vids on an alternate video service. Some more bits allow you to connect your vimeo account with file storage services like OneDrive, Google, DropBox, etc.
They may be evil, but this stuff looks pretty benign.

Nothing about google is benign. I'll tolerate some google stuff, like you said, everywhere, either accept it or get off the web. The problem with Vimeo is that you can't upload a video without allowing the main google script. That is far beyond showing ads. As far as avoiding google there's no difference between Vimeo and youtube.

If you are running your own site why not just serve them up from there?
The only real advantages to a streaming site ala' YT or vimeo seem to be easy access to stats (mine are pathetic), viewer feedback (I never get any there), and instant streaming instead of download / then play.
Come to think of it, why am I on vimeo again? I guess 1 out of 3 aint bad.

Reporting back, had a very nice skate session yesterday afternoon. A brief warmup/rain/refreeze cycle over last weekend Zambonied the surface yet again and left it buttery smooth. It was more like skiing or what I imagine rollerblading is like rather than like skating- didn't need to even lift the blades off the surface. Bluebird skies and a mild 41*F / 5*C didn't hurt either.

I connected an old hard drive to wipe it ("Like with a cloth or something?") before discarding. Forty-eight pin ribbon cable, jumper, old. Friend had a converter to sata to hook it up. The computer did not like that. I had to refresh the OS where it kept my files but now I'm reinstalling the programs. Also setting up automatic restore points and backups.

@Spacekdet: I have one YT subscriber! Must be automatically subscribed to your own channel. Self hosting is a possibility for small videos. I've been thinking ... I don't like evil google and others like them. However, me not using them does no harm to them. Using them gives me the benefits of the services and does no practical harm to me. Guerilla warfare, use the enemy's resources to your benefit, is more effective than a principled stand.

I didn't lose my stuff like business files and CG projects but the OS itself was set back to the start. So all my programs were gone. Re-installing Quickbooks is trouble so far. First it wanted updates for Windows. All were undone by the refresh. Fun, lots of fun. Seven and one half hours, 207 updates later and Quickbooks needs its own update which it won't download because the old version is not supported. Getting a manual update file now ... Really windy today so no outside work anyway.

My birthday hike was ok. I tried to use Blender's video editor to convert a hike video to a format compatible with this (link) player for my site but nothing I do with Blender produces a file it will play. Back to VideoStudio which made a player friendly file but I want to learn to do this with Blender.

Update:

Hike here (link). Featuring landscapes, thwarted plans, no animals, low res video, panoramas, and captcha for trash cans.

I found the formula for Blender to convert a video to a flowplayer friendly format.

Reporting back, just home from sad trip to Red Wing Minnesota to attend a memorial for my cousin.
A year younger than me, he left behind family, fans, a lot of friends, a giant vinyl record collection, a fiancee', an ex-wife, parents, and a teenage son. Fuck cancer.
He was a radio DJ from the age of 15, and quipped that he'd been fired in every time zone- he'd worked from coast to coast
and beyond, to Hawaii. Despite that, he was born for the job and had the perfect radio voice, the endless supply of humor,
and the willingness to say or do damn near anything for 'the show'. You know how at parties there's that one guy who becomes the center of gravity? That was him.

Illinois and Chicago was a nightmare to drive through, with many toll roads that they apparently collect the proceeds from
in order to build more tollbooths. Wisconsin and Minnesota were more my style.
Beautiful landscape along the famous Highway 61 that runs up the west side of the Mississippi River.
Had to cue up some Bob Dylan on the music box for that. Added 2 more states to my 'visited' list.

Was close to an 11 hour drive for me, but there were two lovely fans of his that drove all the way from Hamilton, Ontario,
at least 15 hours through 2 countries and 5 states. They deserve Honorary Super-Groupie Status for that.

On the way back I visited his parents beautiful home high on a bluff on the east side overlooking the Mississippi and enjoyed reminiscing and looking at her bookcases of photo albums.
He'd asked for 'No tears', but #HeyBuddy, that was one request I just could not honor.

Still working through this foot infection. On IV antibiotics which I give myself three times a day. Home health care nurse comes daily to change the bandage. I administer the IV meds with an IV PICC (a catheter that runs from my arm up close to my heart. Brand new baby in the household from my stepdaughter - all available free space in the house has been taken up with diapers, bottles and various baby clothing. Nearly had a panic attack when the coffee port was block off by formula and baby bottles. The baby is kind of a squeaker, seldom loud - so that's a blessing. My wife continues to get better with her post=stroke, speech limitations and right side of body doesn't function as it was before. The luxury of retirement is having time to do stuff, but that time is usually taken up by others in which they think the old man has the time now to do stuff, so I get a lot of "Do you have time to do this for me?" On the other hand, have time to do 3d - but inspiration has left me for the moment. Perhaps in the summer, when it is hot and I stay inside.

@Spacekdet I use MS ICE (link) for the panoramas. Sounds like your cousin lived life and did something he loved. A good example of that for everyone.

@James I wish you both the best with your medical things. My brother-in-law had a mild stroke. He learned to write left handed and then had beautiful handwriting. I get "can you do this" from my customers or their neighbors. Seeing me working doesn't mean I'm busy. It means I have lots of time.

Interesting. I have an evo 212 cpu cooler. The fan on it was rattling and today doesn't turn. The cpu temp while idling and normal web surfing are cooler than with the fan running! A Cycles render on cpu made the temp climb. Ordered a new fan. Computer parts hard to find in stores here.

Edit: Asrock Extreme Tuning Utility says the cpu temp is around 103F but Speccy says it in the 60's or 70's. It is 87F in the room so AXTU is probably correct.

The hang glider fly-in has had little flying due to strong winds. Some launched this morning when there was good wind and I got to have some four wheel drive fun. Also some not that great adventure. On the way back down the mountain with four gliders on top and some disappointed pilots who didn't get to launch the front rack broke loose and the gliders slid forward onto the ground. Bumper damage. Gliders ok.

I had a vacation last week... made a roadtrip around the Czechia :) we have a beautiful country... I slept in the car, parked in the nature... what a relax...Visited lots of forgotten places.

I went to the Independence Day parade. The police and fire department lead the way. There were sports cars, vintage cars, a horse, patriotic organizations, political organizations, businesses, a drone overhead, and beauty queens. The National Anthem was played. ROTC students carried the flag. The commander of the nearby Air Force base rode by but there was no jet fly over and no soldiers marched. The crowd was enthusiastic and it was nice but not like it used to be.

There is a glimmer of hope that Freedom can be restored but the people seem too weak to regain it or keep it or even want it. The storm that was coming is still coming. I have thought that people have become unworthy of Freedom and there is no point in fighting for it. Especially if the storm comes as it always has. Even if few there are those who are worthy and there will be.

A father and his two small girls watched the parade. Christina was friendly and would visit people around them. Her sister's name was Liberty! As the parade was ending Christina approached me. She looked at my small flag and reached out with an open hand. I gave her my flag. In doing so I made a promise.

Seldom Seen Brother is up from Florida so we headed north to the cabin.
Stayed out of town on Saturday (big canoe race on the AuSable river) but went for a paddle down the Manistee River on Sunday.
The weather was so nice I played hooky from work and stayed an extra day on Monday.

@Draise: Privacy unrelated. Condensed version: Yes, that's why I picked firefox. Now firefox plans to join twatter, fakebook, goolag, youtube etc. in censoring or suppressing views and information opposing a political agenda that most "tech giant" leaders support. Most of them also promote real propaganda thus doing the very thing they accuse others of. One way is to declare opposing views "fake news" and claim it is helpful to block, label or demote (shadow ban) it. They enlist "fact checkers" such as snopes and many others who subscribe to the same agenda, are all corrupt, and have no interest in facts. In 1984 terms it's the "memory hole" and the "ministry of truth". Legions of useful idiots help them too. This is what modern tyrants have always done before they use violence.

Looks like a statistic research project and education initiative for a sound philosophy, that you gotta look at both sides of the coin and always be analytical of whatever is being said or shown, don't always take pride that your truth is the truth. I don't think it's censorship, and nowhere have I found info, even directly from Mozilla, that they are partnering up with any other industries in said initiative.

It might shoot people in their own foot, by creating filters for viral clickbait (adblock anyone?), yes, but the exercise is pretty great - atleast the research.

It just looks like an initiative that already exists in scientific papers, peer review systems principally based on data. The paper can't be true if it can't be verified and reproduced by multiple others.

I just watched a great philisophical point that really makes you think about the ethics behind the idea of allowing things to be, or not, and he too mentioned 1984 - but maybe in a context that doesn't quite sound like the angle you're driving. But it does touch the topic of "fake news" and technology and the ethics of how and why and where it should evolve. Quite timely to your comment.

Ultimately, the platforms for peer review on news and articles and social habits to view everything not from your own perspective, but from others, and to also cross check and not just stick to the articles and voices that support your own "truth" is what Mozilla is trying to produce - and the way they wrote it in their blog sounded a bit odd and open to interpretation, yeah, and that is exactly what the other articles did.... Though to think in contra, it is in the Mozilla manifesto to keep the internet open to discussion for all populations without bias, and they seem to claim that research on how the "knowledge bubble" affects people emotionally will support that cause. I can see it's point.

That's just sad. It is informative though as to how things got the way they are. Also sad is that I was going to switch to Opera but it was bought by Chinese companies. Suitable alternatives to the evil companies/organizations will come. Until then it's use the least of the evils.

Other reporting back. One customer moved away, didn't tell me, hasn't paid their bill, and hasn't replied to email yet. Being my own boss is great but I'm tired of this job.

Rewrite TS from scratch? Work on something that isnt his anymore?
He writes a book! Cool I will read it! Use Ts.. yes! Why not! Still working..still usefull!
The workflow of Ts is about 10 years old and so is the code.. but still one has to adapt it! The modeler is still very good...and so are other parts..! The render engine is outdated.. so what! Get the files out of Ts and render outside!
What should Roman help us work on?
Blender in the form of Bfa ist interesting...so focus on that.. TS development very probably wont come back...

It was clear to me 10 years ago that Roman was into neuronal science! TS in its latest itineration 7 had a very neuron resembling approach..with the link editor.....!
That was also a big dispute..inside the TS followers group....!
One group..and Andi Kay was one of them wanted TS to continue..the way TS was before...like modeler side.....TS 6 like....the other group was strongly into link editing and coding...! Andy left back then...and turned to Cinema 4d...and cad software..!I was more biased to the artistic side...so more to the grafics oriented way TS did things...so very modeler side biased...

In poor town you don't need TV to see a police reality show.

I came home to prepare for hauling. Police all over the neighborhood. Two or three cars in the street one house from me. Two officers and a K9 approach a utility building in a yard. The officers shout for the perp to come out or they will let the dog go and he will be bitten. The dog goes into the building followed by the officers with weapons ready. They emerge with no perp and point down the alley and go there. Police are in an intersecting alley. Shouts to "put your hands up" are heard.

More police arrive from all directions. Now there are at least 4 patrol cars, a sheriff's vehicle, an unmarked police car, and a policeman arrived in a pickup truck. A policeman with a rifle walked down the street in front of my house. It looked like he didn't have as much armor as the others. Officers looked into yards along the alley.

At 6pm all is quiet. No news about the event.

Wow, it's been quite some time since I last posted, but I guess TS is a hard habit to break for long. Greetings to all. Leroy aka BNG. Most of my work was done on a laptop, but I stopped using it after stopping work on Battlezone II Combat Commander; it pretty much died a few months ago.

Still love using TS, but haven't done much with it lately. Am trying to get back in to 3d modeling on the character rigging and associated animation end. Found a few programs for working with pre-animated models in a free program called Muvizu, but I'm looking to import ASE models from TS in to it using the model side TS ASE exporter on the model side. I understand Clinton made one for the work space side, but have yet to try using it for Muvizu as it needs collisions to be supported in the ASE format; anyone know if either ASE format supports collisions? Thx, Leroy.

As far as I know file formats DONT support collisions but programs that you import to can and do through physics! The problem is....most imports and exports are broken! Its because file formats are inconsistant! I posted in the general debate section about 4 weeks about about my findings on file format compatability....and that is through Nugraf... or Polyttrans! As far as I know these people realy know file format! Costly yes.. but I struggle with results from other options! Nugraf and Polytrans supports all possible export capabilities of TS!
Both Cob format as well as SCN..including instancing in and out of it!!!!!!
Both have working trials..that habe a small difference to the normal program..it drops every 5th poly!
Its also a must have for Blender since file exchange compatibility is a very weak point of Blender which as such is an awsome app esp. Bforartists version!

As far as I know one tutorial using Sketch up shows a second model being made from the first adding a constraint for the collision part. I guess it's required by Muvizu's engine to render the object for character models to climb on like say a stairway. It's all Greek to me at this point. Can the ASE export settings be added for this purpose? Haven't really done much with Muvizu, but I may get a licence key to be able to import ASE models into the program itself. I saw a Blender tutorial to do the same thing but Blender so far is far more complicated then Truespace ever was.

My Inferno Hike went well. 108F (42.2C). I went to a part of the dunes with more plants so there were more critters too. I saw a white lizard, ants, birds, miscellaneous insects, a tarantula hawk wasp, and tracks. Some interesting tracks must have been made by large animals. They made sets of two imprints about 3 feet (1 meter) apart. In some places two of them traveled together. Maybe deer running?

A sign said no drones. I saw videos from drones on the web and this time lapse is nice. link

omg that temp! how do you dress on the hike like that? short sleeves and ton of sun creme??? do you carry gun on hikes? are there any dangerous animals? That dunes look awesome.
I think i experienced something like 38C (or around 100F) only. Was enough but still barable.

I wear jeans, long sleeve shirt, no cap, usually my high top work boots ... and sun screen. Sand gets in regular shoes too easily and high tops give some protection from twisting an ankle. Caps or hats broil my head. I don't see how people can wear them. I'd like a cap's eye shade though.

The air is very dry here. Sweat evaporates instantly for efficient cooling and doesn't feel wet and miserable. I remember east Texas heat plus humidity. Desert dry heat good. Wet heat bad.

I often carry my .357 magnum on hikes but these dunes are within military land, White Sand Missile Range, and I think that isn't allowed there. That's probably why drones aren't allowed too. The missile range is why I find interesting junk in the dunes.

There are potentially dangerous animals in the larger area. Mostly they aren't aggressive. Large animals like mountain lions (cougars) and the elusive animals (not naming until I get photos) are fenced out of the open-to-civilians part of the dunes. There are black bears in the mountains and coyotes and snakes everywhere.

My website is being re-remodeled so it will be a while before I post new photos.

Inferno part two was good. I went near the edge of the dunes and saw different formations, critters, and plants. I used the snow and beach setting on my camera and the photos look better. The regular setting gave a blue tint.

All mowers are in the shop and now my truck makes a scary sound from the right rear wheel. Sounds like loose brake parts. No mechanics until Monday.

We had 'wet' mid 90 F temps here for a day or so last week but it's moderated nicely since then.
Got in my Solstice Hike a day or so late. Bugs were friendly in the less breezy portions.
