Calling all Modelers/Animators
Ok now that I have gained your interest here is the project details.
I am looking for several good modelers that like doing cartoon style material.
The project at hand is for next years River Run Film Festival that is held in Winston-Salem, NC.
If the film passes the River Run it will then move onto Florida and eventually to Colorado.
While there is no prize money for the animation the real prize is that the movie will then move onto the next level.
The main objective in this is to create a 30 min. animated movie that will get seen by producers and directors and they will then be interested enough to buy the project and want to produce it.
If you have advanced experience in Poser that is a plusssss.
For those that are interested please send me a PM and I will reply with more details.
Almost forgot the story line.
It is a Romeo/Juliet type story based around animals in the forest, more so between two squirrels.
The story starts from that of a father reading his young son a bedtime story and then fades into the actual video.
I will also be mentioning United3dArtist in the opening credits and TrueSpace in the ending credits.
All that participate will have their name appearing in alphabetical order.
Look forward to hearing from everyone and this include Steinie....

Re: Calling all Modelers/Animators
From their site:
"The RiverRun International Film Festival is a non-profit cultural organization dedicated to the role of cinema as a conduit of powerful ideas and diverse viewpoints. Our mission is to foster a greater appreciation of cinema and a deeper understanding of the many people, cultures and perspectives of our world through regular interaction with great films and filmmakers.
Held annually each spring, RiverRun screens a wide variety of feature-length and short films from all genres, and also presents a broad range of special events, including high-profile regional premieres of significant films, celebrity tributes, family matinees and classic retrospectives as well as a mixture of panel discussions and parties. In 2010, the Festival presented 122 films from 34 countries, bringing more than 50 filmmakers and other industry professionals to Winston-Salem from around the world. Filmmakers and guests traveled from Germany, New Zealand, Mexico, Canada and across North America to share their films, passions and stories with our audiences.
Comparable in size and scope to the well-regarded film festivals in Nashville, Atlanta and Boston, RiverRun is a general audience festival that draws attendees from throughout the South and offers an eclectic program from film studios, independent distributors and first-time filmmakers. As the Festival has obtained national and international recognition, RiverRun has attracted substantial press and increased levels of attendance. RiverRun issued more than 13,500 tickets in 2010, marking an increase of 10% in admission.
One of RiverRun's greatest assets is the collection of industry guests we bring to Winston-Salem each year, to attend the Festival's events and share their passion with the filmgoers attending screenings. RiverRun has two awards that are given each year to honor filmmakers. The 2010 Master of Cinema Award went to Peter Bogdonavich who directed Paper Moon and The Last Picture Show, among many other films. The 2010 Emerging Master of Cinema Award that went to David Gordon Green, a young filmmaker who is making his mark in the film industry with films such as George Washington and Pineapple Express.
RiverRun also prides itself on bringing together a high-caliber pool of jurors to evaluate the films in competition. Their attendance and participation in the annual Festival has helped make it what it is today. In 2010 alone, for instance, RiverRun hosted 25 people on its juries, including actress Andie MacDowell; Trevor Groth — the head of programming for Sundance; filmmaker Craig Zobel; Hollywood Reporter critic Duane Byrge; and representatives from the Cleveland and Sarasota film festivals. Many of these industry guests and filmmakers mingled with RiverRun attendees by way of Q+A sessions and/or RiverRun events and informal gatherings.
In addition to our regular programming RiverRun presents free public screenings to students and participating schools during the run of the annual Festival. This Education Outreach initiative is part of our most active component of RiverRun’s year-round activities and is called “Films with Class.” Through these efforts, RiverRun helps thousands of students from Forsyth county understand the diversity of the human experience and become better global citizens."

The script is taken from my ideas and I have a creative writer (my Cousin) who is also a published author of a few childrens books that is working on the script. At this point it is about 2/3 of the way done and should be finished within the next month.
Let me add the list of people that will also be contributing their talents.
Music: MRT Recording of Ohio
Kevin Jones- Piano, Keyboard and Vocals
Jimmy Swaim- Banjo, Acoustic Guitar
Voices: Jeff Wicker- Voice of Father reading story and the main squirrel
Bobby Whitt- Voice of Bullfrog 1
Jeff Roig- Voice of Bullfrog 2 and Male Squirrel #2
Keving Jones- Voice of Turtle
Beverly Roig- Voice of Female Squirrel
Jimmy Swaim- Voice of Old Crow
Still working on voices for the sparrow and other small animals.

Re: Calling all Modelers/Animators
Would be cool to see a few scribbles or paints for the style, art & colors etc. that you want to achive. ( or a example style like "ica age" or "monsters inc" - i hope you know what i mean )
There are a lot different catoon styles out there but i think it should be fit together.
But the project sounds very interesting.

Jeff,
What character do you need designed?
My one concern about this project would be the mix of styles as Design Devil hinted at.

Re: Calling all Modelers/Animators
Ralph,
You have a great start going there.
Lower jaw needs to be bigger so when he bellows it will swell.
Fred and Frank are in their 20's no glasses one is smaller and skinny while the other is fat.
You can keep the mesh in one piece except for the eye balls.
What I mean by "G" rated is general audience.
Meaning that any child could watch it.
Great work you are doing there.
I just started working on Lester the masculine squirrel.
Here is a rough version.

Re: Calling all Modelers/Animators
Great job there Ralph.
Can you give him some lips, fat one but not too fat.
Dont worry about doing any of the rigging as I am going to be doing this one in Maya so the rigging is a bit different than in Poser or TrueSpace.
I have changed the texture of Jimmy the squirrel.
Once you read the story you will understand why.
Here is a new image.

Ralph,
The frog is fine in the pose that you have him in.
He needs some lips added to give him some character.
Neither of the frogs will be walking the majority of their movements will be head and arms and eyes and mouth.
They will be sitting next to the pond catching dragonflies.

Re: Calling all Modelers/Animators
Pugman1, is it too late to shorten his neck so it's not so high and then widen his head? Everything else looks cool to me but those two items keep him from looking like a bull frog.
Of course Jeff wants fuller lips too.
Of course Jeff wanted two Frogs so both of these "Looks" could work as a possibility. Both of them sitting side by side could be visually funny also.

Re: Calling all Modelers/Animators
Hey you don't have to do much at all except highlight the area I showed you and widen and squat. The resolution of the model doesn't even have to change. (Not sure how to explain this in "ZBrush" speak)
From below the neck down you don't have to touch at all. Try to keep the eyes rounder then I show. This was a quick screen alter.

Re: Calling all Modelers/Animators
Ralph,
Don't be in a rush, I am not ready to start do the animation.
Be creative and think toony.
Make one eye larger than the other and put the eyes close together.
Give him fat lips and a large bag under the chin that is plump and round.
Make his hands big.
These are all just suggestions.
Do a google search for cartoon frog images and get some ideas there.
Make this yours, you can do it, you have a great start and have a good imagination.

I made this Japanese farmhouse a while back. Last year in November to be precise, because that's how far back I had to go in my blog archives before I found this image

If you're interested, feel free to use it. Just send me an email or PM and I'll send you the model file right way.

Hi Jeff. i hope this is not a prob for you. I just took the frog into
modo to see if i could texture him, put a nice one on him but in the render screen it showed
him as 2.14 million polys in zbrush it is only about 789 000 polys .
if modo can handle him i think maya will have no prob but the animation app might

Yes you should have my email address.
Either send me the original or re-decimate the frog with a lower setting so that
his hands do not break apart.

Re: Calling all Modelers/Animators
Ralph, I like your skinny frog.
Now you will need to lower the poly count so that Jeff can use it.
Here are the steps using ZBrush and Decimation Master:
Under ZPlugin select Decimation Master
When you select "Decimate All" a warning box should appear
Select "Pre-Process Required Sub Tools" when the box pops up.
Now find "3-Decimate" and slide the slider to the left until it says something between 1.2%-1.4%
Click on "Decimate All"
If everything worked you should have a low poly character.
Now in the "Tool" box located on top rightt of the screen select "Make Polymes3D"
Select "Export" to save as an .obj

Re: Calling all Modelers/Animators
Bob,
Here is the sparrow after doing some re-texturing.
Can you extend the head slightly from the body creating a small neck line.
I am unable to group the head from the body and still keep the necklace.
I created a small bun hair dew and decreased the OD of the legs.

Re: Calling all Modelers/Animators
No, sorry.
I build this car from scratch with a bit help of "google image search" (for a idea). I had in mind what type of car could stay in front of my toon - house. (Well, the house himself fits not really to this car, but good enough - maybe i create another house for it
)
I repeat it again - "your are the director" - tell us what you need. Take a look around for the style that you want to achive and give as INPUT so that we can create your world
A image says more than 1000 words, so search the net for references and give it to us.
I personaly like a style which is a bit from "Jimmy Neutron", "Planet 51" and the Toys from my kids
. Smooth rounded shapes - but not to much. Clean, clear, simple textures and shades. A little bit deformed but also not to much.
Edit: What i also want to know...how many faces, vertices are allowed? Is it importend? What is with SDS? Can we use this?
questions, questions, questions.....

Re: Calling all Modelers/Animators
DD,
Here is an image of a car to give you an idea of the style.
The headlights should be headlights and not eyes as there will be people inside the cars.
You are right that rounded smooth surfaces will work better.
I dont have a exact polygon count for you but vertices around 1500 or less.

Re: Calling all Modelers/Animators
Yep, good style. I also use the black windows because there is no interior.
1500 Vertices ???
For example my car has now 7130 - and i am not finished yet. To looking good it needs to apply min. 1 x SDS on it. Otherwise it is really flat. That gives 28196 Vertices.
EDIT: I tweaked a bit around and now i have 4478 Vertices but i have to add a few details also. (with 1 x SDS = 18174 Vert. in the moment)
So i think 5000 Vert. is possible (without SDS). A better (smooth, clean, round) result is just possible with nurbs in my eyes. But this could be a export/import problem.
1500 - impossible (for me)

Re: Calling all Modelers/Animators
DD,
I will send you one of the car models I have from another person.
You can check my count on the vertices.
Ralph,
Need to redo another Frog.
I am unable to make the morph for opening and closing the mouth and the design does not look similar to the other frog.
There needs to be some similarity between the two as they are cousins.
Frank is the fat one while Fred is the skinny one.
The Fat frog turned out great, see if you can apply the same creativity to the skinny one but keep the polygon count down.

Re: Calling all Modelers/Animators
Jeff,
Please do not use the "Short Sparrow" that was re-textured. If you need the head to be able to rotate then I'll remodel another one. It was not requested in the list of features when I asked. I have a major problem when my work is re-textured since it is my work being used but not my textures. I don't recall a Sparrow having a yellow beak or feet. If that is what you would like then just let me know. Sorry for the headaches but if you want submissions from me then they should be edited by me. I have no problem with you modifying the model for animation but the overall shape should remain the same or you will need to ask me for corrections like modifying for skinnier legs. The initial request was for a fat old lady Sparrow that can fly and walk. I think that was supplied. I love doing this stuff for you but my stuff cannot be altered. It's Mine, Mine Mine!
I textured Fred the Frog and I really should have asked Pugman1 permission first. Sorry about that Ralph. Please let me know if there was any issues with me doing that.
p.s. Ralph, You had asked me what program was used for textures, I used Sculptris to paint the Frog and Sparrow. The problem is getting the "correct" model into Sculptris. (It is sometimes a huge pain!)
Also if you need ideas for the look of the other Frog just let me know.

Re: Calling all Modelers/Animators
Steinie,
Not a problem on the retexturing or changing of the design.
I probably should of said why I had to do it.
When rigging the structure I do the legs and arms first.
I noticed when I did the legs due to the thickness of the ankle area that it did not bend correctly it looked more like a fold.
By decreasing the OD of the ankle it fixed this problem.
The neck line I will need so that the pearl necklace will work correctly otherwise when the head bends the necklace pushes into the chest area and shoulder area.
I will remember this for future issues.
I was not planning on using the sparrow as the neck would not work.
Ralph,
I am looking forward to seeing what you got up your sleeve.
To everyone involved in this project.
As I have always done my own work meaning modeling/texturing/Animation I am new to working with others in the creative process.
In the past I have worked with musicians and voice talents so this is my first effort to work with fellow modelers.
If I step over my bounds dont be afraid to say something as I want everyone to feel good about what they have contributed and the end result.

Re: Calling all Modelers/Animators
I have been holding back on letting everyone know certain facts about the animation until I was 100% sure.
So I can now say who is doing the music and some of you might be surprised.
If you have ever listened to Chris Daughtry then you have heard this guitar player.
His name is Jeremy Brady and for the first year that Daughtry was on tour and on his first CD Jeremy Brady was the lead guitar player and contributed in many other ways.
Jeremy Brady is from NC and has a band called The Back Porch Orchestra, a country band with a unique sound.
You check out some of their music at the following link.
http://www.reverbnation.com/backporchorchestra
The girl that sings for them will also be doing the voice of Lonnie the female squirrel as there is a couple spots when some singing is required and combine this with her natural southern voice makes a winning combination.
