Yeow, ok, cold showers are not good. Maybe in June and July when the ground is hot down to the pipes. The tap water is warm then. A wash cloth is tolerable and I could do my hair without getting freezing wet. Maybe a real short hair cut is needed. I'll try "toughing it out" tomorrow. It might be better after the initial shock.

Edit 4-24-11, I got a camp shower (bag with tube and sprayer) and heat water on the stove. That worked well. I'll see if I can fix the water heater but the tank might be rusted.

I went hiking for Easter. A tale of misery, suffering, and dumb mistakes. I wrote on my hiking blog for one hike that "nature does not tolerate bad decisions". I didn't take enough water on that hike. I had plenty on this one but I sure got away with a lot of other stuff. Mistake 1: hiking in new boots. Mistake 2: started too late. Mistake 3: didn't check sundown time. Mistake 4: no one knew where I was.

So I parked near an organized camp ground at a canyon that is a state park. My goal was a canyon 2.5 miles south of there. It took longer than I thought due to mesquite thickets and rough terrain. When I got there I hardly had any time to explore the canyon. It was clear at that time that my heels had blisters. It was also clear that I barely had enough time to get back to the truck before it was dark. So I raced back with ever worsening blisters and couldn't stop to rest. I got to the truck moments before it was too dark to see. It would have been nice to stay and see the stars (no more Milky Way from my front yard, too many people and lights) but I was exhausted.

I am amazed that the blisters aren't bleeding. They sure did hurt. My knee hurts. I think my lips are sunburned.

I did see good things and scenery. There were no roads to the canyon or nearby. No evidence of people there.

Here are some deer and for you airplane enthusiasts some slurry bombers. The planes flew over where I was. They are slurry bombers that help put out wildfires. There used to be some WWII bombers here that were converted to fire fighters. I am no deer expert but I think these are mule deer due to their large ears and large size. All these photos were with 10x zoom.

On my crew, the guy with the new boots buys lunch.

Add a foot of duct tape rolled up on a pencil to the daypack.
Armor plates the blister for a little while.
Fits neatly inside the spare roll of TP. Don't be like me and learn the hard way by hiking without it! :shock:
Nothing like a long walk to get the bugs out of the system....

I can see why you wanted to get back to the truck...I wouldn't want to blunder along in the dark with these things waiting:

Another one of my essential camp/bugout bag items:
Solar Shower Bag

Also works for home use in a pinch (like when the water heater is busted)
I usually just fill it mostly with cold water and add a saucepan's worth of boiling water.
A lot quicker than waiting for the sun to do it, although it works fo' free that way if you time it right.
Mix it up and proceed to remove crud.

First kayak trip of the season.

Roughly circumnavigated both lakes, aside from a couple detours around brooding swans. Poppa gets all huffy and puffy when you get too close to Momma. Interesting clouds with rain off to the east but sun poking through holes like a searchlight in the west.
Played the wind by staying in the lee of the shoreline, only one section where I had to head directly upwind. Poured it on to stay warm and it worked for everything but my ears. Nice trip but a little melancholy too as I pass what used to be high oak tree crowned ridges but are now sporting giant 3 story mansions. Too far back on the ridge to see the lake? Cut all the trees in the wetland in between ... problem solved!
Funny, when I was a kid that was 'State Land' and belonged to everybody. 'Trail's End' has come to an end, indeed.

Total Mileage: 4.6 mi / 7.4 km. Top speed: 14.3 mph / 23 kmph. ...about as fast as I was skating last January.

Sorry about your garden Trueblue.

Wildfires all over the state. Not around my town. Don't know if there are more than usual. Some evacuations and some buildings burned. They have closed the National Forests due to dry conditions and fire danger. Can't legally hike there until we get some rain.

It is nice and toasty in the daytime but still cool at night. That has delayed the start of mowing season which is my main money maker. The Bermuda grass, which can tolerate the heat, needs warm nights before it greens up.

At the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park Colorado!
This is the hotel that inspired Stephen King for 'The Shining'.
Yes I do believe in ghosts; we did have some possible activity:
we're on the 4th floor; the 2nd is the most active. Went down
the elevator, I KNOW I pushed '1'; the door opened on the 3rd,
no one was there. Maybe someone changed their mind and decided
to take the stairs. We were in our room for about 10 minutes
and the bathroom lights flickered. We repeatedly heard 2 taps/ticks
for a couple hours last night. We're going on the ghost tour at 1:30.
Really nice here; yesterday was perfect for setting the mood:
overcast, cold, gloomy. We drove up into the Rocky Mountain National
Park around dusk. Didn't go too far though. Saw elk and deer. Very cool.
We took pics. I will post them. Also saw elk right around the hotel,
around the road.

The clutch in my truck acted weird yesterday and is non-functional this morning. I can't shift with the truck running. It won't disengage so I just grind gears. Fortunately there is a mechanic a few blocks away. Don't know how to pay for this and pay the bills too ... if I can pay for this at all.

Hopefully this is what caused the trouble that I thought was the differential. Hopefully it is not both.

My neighbors are are nice folks but they are ill (mentally or physically) or old. They can't help push and relying on them to tow it responsibly is not a good idea. Maybe I can push it to the mechanic, about three blocks, with a full load of stuff in the back. I'll walk down to the mechanics and see if one of them will tow it. Tow with a chain from another pickup, not the expensive tow truck type of thing.

Edit: Fixed. It just needed fluid. The clutch has a container of brake fluid and it was empty.

Jury duty starting in July. Third time. Orientation in a couple of weeks. They pay minimum wage so that's good. I didn't get selected for any trials the last time but was on some the first time.

No clutch fluid leaks yet.

Jury duty orientation was normal except they warned us about a big murder trial that might last 2-3 weeks right in the middle of prime mowing season. I hope I don't get put on that one.

I got a big federal tax refund check. Probably from the earned income credit. I checked the box for them to figure it for me and expected a small refund or maybe all that I paid back. I am disturbed that the check is for much more than I paid so the evil of redistribution is there.

The tax refund plus most of what I managed to save went ... drum roll please ... to pay taxes. That was enough to pay the Texas size property tax on my land there. Seems no one really owns land we just rent it from the government.

107 F! Yeah! (41.7 C) It's been over 100 for days and over 97 for two weeks or more. The record for today was 110. The bank's sign said 112 but it always shows hotter than the official temperature.

Fire every where. I saw smoke from a forest fire in the mountains and thought it was closer like in the first canyon from here. I live in the desert at the foot of the mountains. It is no threat to my town but it is burning up some nice hiking places and a mountain town is threatened. Los Alamos has been evacuated due a fire near there. Far from here but unusual for a whole town to be evacuated.

Business is picking up but it is cleanups instead of easy mowing. The heat started the Bermuda grass but the drought and the extended time of extra hot temps roasted the non-desert plants. The grass is not growing much. It rained a little today and rainy season approaches. It is not so hot now so the shower water is getting less comfortable. Back to heating it on the stove. My neighbor has a used water heater I might buy from him.

I used Makehuman to get a figure to use in Messiah. I saved it as obj and Messiah read it in but it looks like half the triangles are transparent. I don't know how to use the materials or renderer yet though. I did get an arm rigged with Messiah's auto rig feature. I read part of online manual/tutorial on PMG's site. The auto rig was not that "auto" but it does provide a detailed humanoid skeleton. I'll post something when I've learned more.

I textured a model in Messiah Studio with an image. Plenty more to learn. I followed the Texturing: Beginner tutorial the manual at http://www.eggswhyzed.com/messiah_docs/" with a different model. The interface is not intimidating as some think. It just takes open mindedness and effort to learn. "Try it and see" won't work for learning Messiah but if you are willing to study then there is a lot of power there.

Going on a short hike where I search for the elusive animal. Maybe I'll find them this time.

Trials for my jury pool were canceled until now. I have to go to selection Monday. I don't mind doing my duty but this is not a good time for things to interfere with work. Later this month several jury pools report on the same day. That must be selection for the big double murder trial they warned us about. I hope I don't get put on that one since it might last weeks during monsoon season = prime grass mowing season.

There's a ridge on fire on the mountains near here. I tried to take photos from the street in front of my house but I couldn't hold the camera steady enough. This is the best one. The fire is several miles away and 1500 to 2000 feet higher than town. It is forest at that altitude. I'm guessing it was a mile to 1.5 miles wide in this photo. Illuminated smoke and less bright parts don't show in the picture.

If your camera has a timer function it helps for night shots- set it on something stable, push the button and let go.

The fire was below the forested ridge where I thought it was and burned a smaller area. It is out today. It was below cliffs below the ridge in desert vegetation. No houses near there. It is National Forest land. The television translators are on the ridge where I thought the fire was and Sunspot solar observatory is a few miles from there.

I was selected for a jury. They think the trial will last today and maybe tomorrow.

Feel better now. Started as guts-on-fire, then nausea at court, then weakness/sleepiness. So I think it was a bug. Can't stay out of the heat Froo. If I'm not sick tomorrow I have 3 mowings and whatever catch up work I can do. Plus the rains started, raining now, so many afternoons aren't workable. I'm going to try to get a guy to help since some customers have been waiting too long.

Had a flat tire yesterday and put the spare on. As of an hour ago this is the spare. I'll put the small spare that came with the truck on in the morning and get the flat fixed. It has a nail. Maybe they will have a good used tire for a spare. I prefer a full size regular one.

First day at work after 7 weeks of vacation. A vacation fully occupied with all mantaines with the house, cars and some blender 2.5.

Only 9 years left to the retirement. At that time I hope I have more time to stay at the computer and hopefully learning TS 9.1 or Blender 7.5. For the moment I am working to learn blender 2.5.

Jury duty selection again tomorrow. It is about 50% that I'll be on the jury. One more possible trial after that it and will be a few years before I'm on it again.

So far my pool has had 1 trial out of about 10 possibilities. If tomorrow's and the next one have trials then what happened to around 9 potential criminals? Plea bargains wouldn't change the number of trials, much, just the charges. Some might be dismissed due to flimsy cases or technicalities. Drug and alcohol related might have bargained to go to rehab. But ... 9 out of 12?

Edit: The defendant and his lawyer didn't appear for the trial. He probably fled. The judge issued a warrant for his arrest and let the jury go. This will boost the economy by providing jobs for bounty hunters

Edit: My mistake. Plea bargains would reduce the number of trials since a plea deal includes pleading guilty to the lesser charge. Duh, plea bargain.

There is an airshow in early October at the nearby Air Force base. Thunderbirds! Maybe I'll get to see an F-22 raptor up close. I always liked seeing the latest and greatest flying around here but the raptors are being sent to another base. They didn't fly over the Independence Day parade this year.

I had stuff to throw away for a customer. One box was heavy and had several ingots of lead in it. I took it to a coffee shop where I go and gave it to a waitress. She shoots muzzle loaders and will make bullets from it.

My wife, Nellja, went to a place called 'HotPots' tonight. She picked out a big plate, and painted it.
It was a ladies' night out. It turned out fantastic. We can pick it up next Thursday, after they glaze and fire it. We're going to put it up on the mantle or a bookshelf. I'll see if I can take a picture of it and post it here. She's a really good artist in her own right. She prefers real canvas (not a computer screen) (And her voice

The trip went sour and I came back early (family business stuff), but, I took a bunch of nice pics. - For once, I harvested the grapes with my own hands, for my father's beloved wine.

RE: World Trade Center - I can say I was lucky enough to have been on the roof a few years before they fell. (rare event as it usually is/was too windy most of the time and they wouldn't let anyone out there). The view was breath-taking. Sidenote: WTC event is aching me still. Too many unanswered questions remain. Anyway; my son and I have left our mark on one of the I beams during a memorial ceremony. We've left our signatures. And what did I write also? "FREEDOM... is Not Free".

RE: Gliding - Tommy; you glide? If true, AWEsome! What an experience!
I think every schoolchild of All countries should get to see this Wondrous planet from high above (above 50,000 ft preferably). The children being the future, all the petty differences and arguements we adults teach them would go out the window and they can truly begin to create a 'better world'.

I have also picked some grapes for my parents and they have made some juice from it. I didn't believe it should be grapes when they planted the plant but it did. I think it's the global warming that does it. For about 1500 years ago when it was warmer there was grapes naturally growing here in Sweden but not now.

Been going through papers to discard/shred, getting the house organized still.
Got rid of some dvds and books, still more to go. Outdated books. My desktop
hasn't been powered on in several weeks. The net reception sucks so I use the
laptop instead. Funny thing - they are very close to each other but the laptop
works much better with a wireless connection. Getting ready for Halloween woohoo!

The air show today was fun. I got sunburn. Three sets of camera batteries (rechargeable AA) ran out even though I didn't take many pictures so no photos of the Thunderbirds flying. Security was tighter than earlier shows. Civilians had to ride buses to and from the parking area, more armed security (a soldier near the parking lot had an M-4), dogs, metal detectors, and lots of rules. They stamped civilian's hands with the name of the parking area even though there was only one area for civilians.

Lots of planes to see on the ground: F-22, B-1 bomber, A-10, F-16, F-4 Phantom, Reaper(?) drone, old passenger plane, old war planes, and German tornado and others. There were no cargo planes among the ground displays. There usually are. Flying included flybys of a B-2 bomber, the Thunderbirds, aerobatic planes, F-22 passes, Tornado formations, and others.

I got a warning by police for having "white showing" on one tail light. The plastic is broken and I have red tape on it since red is required. When I looked at it the bare bulb is not visible but a little white/silver area below it is. I guess that has to be red too. No problem. More tape.

Had to take a guy to the Army hospital emergency in El Paso last night. Better treatment and even with the drive time probably quicker to get help. Didn't get back until 5am. I slept all morning but as soon as the coffee wears off I'll be a zombie.

My truck's clutch problem needs fixin'. The fluid (it works like the brakes and uses brake fluid) leaks out. It is difficult to shift now. The cheaper mechanics said the parts aren't available anymore (1989 truck). Took a few minutes for me to find the parts on the web. Repair kits, seals, springs total less than thirty dollars. Replacement master and slave cylinders are $30 each. A fortune to me at this time but probably possible. I hope it keeps working until I get the parts.

I'll print out the pages and show the mechanics to be sure that's what is needed.

I've got one door handle. Both outer door handles are broken off so I have to leave a window down to open from the inside latch. I leave the passenger window down a little all the time so I'm not locked out if I forget to roll down the driver's one. So I get to drive around in the icy cold (it's ok after noon though) with a window partly open = no heat. You'd think I'd be highly motivated to put that handle on right? Sometimes it seems there's no point to trying.

I got a good used tire to replace one with belts showing through cracks.

I finally had to let my 1988 truck leave for that great junkyard in the sky.
Was sad to see it go as I'd had it since it was brand new.
Many of your problems seem familiar to me- including the wonky door handle that I had to operate just right and very gingerly.
It was a fuel pump that laid her low, then too long a period of waiting for repairs.
They die by degrees if you don't drive them.
I'll miss that magnificently rusty old bitch.

Edit: Reporting back: Ordered air show tickets for next August.
Discount for ordering early. Really couldn't afford it but hey, a discount.
After I checked out and printed the tickets I realized I'd forgotten to input the discount code- ended up paying full price.

The latest Flash update broke the operation of every single photo gallery on my photoblog.
116 galleries that now need to be fixed, either by rebuilding them with a different generator, (and then re-uploading them) or by some arcane script wizardry that I'm yet to figure out.
Ahhh, progress.

Air show good! Broken site bad. Hopefully there is an easier way to fix it.

Now I've got a dental problem. What I think is a filling came out or off. It is that new ceramic/plastic kind. Doesn't hurt but it should be fixed. Wonder how much that will cost?

I got a water heater! Free! My neighbor got it when he installed a new one for someone. It is fairly new. Won't have it all hooked up until tomorrow.

I got the parts to repair my truck's clutch. Now when I have some time with no work I'll let mechanics put them in.

Looks like I was the only one w/ the problem, still don't know what caused it, or what fixed it.

One of my German customers was sent back. I wished him well and said I bet he'll will be happy to be home. He said he doesn't want to go back because people here are nice and friendly and there they are "me me me what can I get".

I meet both types of people no matter where I go. This might be human nature more than locale.
