Fraser firs make excellent Christmas trees.
First year we've had one, usually it's a Scotch Pine.
Short needles make cleanup easy.
I didn't have to unclog the vacuum cleaner afterwards. Another first.
Now the birds get to use it for winter cover.
Yes, this means we just dragged it outside.

I might try to grow some, they are pretty trees but unfortunately susceptible to an imported European pest once mature.

Where I live, Värmland Sweden, I hardly ever come across anyone who shows any form of interest in anyone outside their own circle of acquaintances. In Holland however, where I was born, most people tend to be just as friendly to strangers as they are to their closest friends. Heh, I once saw my father start a conversation with a mother and her child when we were on a bus as if he had known them for years, and they acted the same way.
So yeah, different cultures indeed...

Chuck fans read! ......... WARNING!

Saw the series finale of Chuck. If you are a fan and lucky enough to have not seen it BE WARNED: DO NOT WATCH the finale! The writers ruined everything that made the series good and betrayed the show's nature, the actors, and the audience. The finale holds nothing good for you. It is just mean and disrespectful. The couple of episodes before the finale episodes (2hr) aren't worth much either and I'd advise skipping them too. It would even ruin reruns for you ... you wouldn't want to watch them.

Reporting back, Yo-yo temps followed by rain and then snow have crapped up the ice for skating.
At least I had two good days -about a total of 4 hours- of 'ballroom floor' conditions.
Fun while it lasted.

It is still warm for the season. Around 60 days and above freezing most nights. I hope it stays warm here and you get good ice for skating up there.

Yeah. Maybe I over-reacted a little.
I mean it is nice being able to put on hold / renew books online.
It still hasn't stopped me from managing to run up the occasional late fee.

I tried an ebook and that's where things turned tragic.
First, I have to wait days for a copy, (?) then I clicked the wrong format to download. (!)
Now I get to wait two weeks before it 'expires' and I can have another crack at it.

This is hilarious. No joke, real town, real people: There is a small town, Sunland Park, in my state and it is election time. There are two candidates for Mayor, I'll call them Smith and Jones since I don't remember their names. Smith got a video of Jones enjoying a lap dance from a stripper and told Jones to drop out of the race or he'd release it. Jones didn't drop out and Smith released the video. One of them got a resident of Texas, his buddy, registered to vote in the New Mexico town. Seemed really familiar as I was reading it; turns out I read it already somewhere. I think parts of it were incorporated into the Ken Burns film on WWII.
Still good enough to read again. Well, I don't know if 'good' is quite the right adjective, considering the subject.
Interesting, in a gut-wrenching way.

We're getting April weather a month early.
Hyacinths, daffs and tulip bulbs are already 4 inch sprouts in the warmer, more protected beds.
Normally it's crusty snow, a perma-lid of dank gray Lake Effect clouds, and endless murk. The only highlight is the honk of geese and sandhill cranes returning, but they've been here already for weeks.
I don't ever remember a winter where the lake didn't stay frozen over. The upper lake is now also completely ice-free.
Not that I'm complaining.

Bundled up mom in her wheelchair and took her and the dog for a stroll around the neighborhood.
It wasn't long before I regretted feeding the dog beans and the leftover hamburger grease drippings last night.
I brought cleanup bags and did the best I could, but what I needed was a snow shovel and a pressure washer.
Sorry neighbor, hope it rains soon!

Warmer here too until lately. Now it is unusually cold. First day of Spring and I got up this morning to 28 F and a dusting of snow on the truck. It snowed in March some years ago. Prediction says returning to normal (70's F) and nice 80's weekend.

Did my taxes. I'm self employed now! Tax line for wages, salary, and tips ... zero! No boss! All income is my business profit!

Still owe some tax. I hope I've got enough to cover the truck repairs and the overdue bills and the taxes. Things will be better soon with mowing season. I don't owe any regular income tax. Only about the upper half pay any. I owe self employment tax (socialist security and medicare). Don't like it but I'll take my benefits when it is time. I was forced to pay in so I'll get as much back as I can.

Now to do the state taxes. Probably won't owe any. Soon I'll have to pay the gross receipts tax on my business gross income. Next year I'll pass that cost on to customers and add a little price increase for me too. I have enough customers now to afford to lose a few and my new more affluent customers can recommend me to their buddies.

Me too. I did some heavy labor yesterday and I'm sore today.

You know the warnings about oily rags spontaneously catching on fire? Yep, it happened. I got my plastic tub of stuff to put linseed oil on a customer's doors and my oily rag was partly burned. Amazingly, none of the surrounding things were touched including the plastic pail it was in and the mineral spirits. I was fortunate it didn't burn down my storage shed. I wonder why it didn't keep burning?

What is it you are paddling? Kayak? Canoe? rowing dory? based on the paddle, I am guessing kayak. I have been using mine all winter, it's a bit of a pain in the ice, but worth the effort for the exercise... not that I am in great shape by any means

but it is better than trying to go to a gym and deal with that. Just give me the good ole out doors and I'll find a way to keep in shape...

Paddling a 17 foot Valley 'Skerray' sea kayak.

The Dry Side:

I'm completely comfortable in it ...until I stop and pull out the camera.
Must be psychological because all of a sudden I feel like I'm balancing on a unicycle.
Most shots turn out exactly like those- tilted horizons and motion-blurred as I hurry to take a snap and then stow the camera back in the Otter Box.
Naturally, I'd love a GoPro Hero or at least a waterproof digital for things like this.

Reporting back, I noticed that the deck bungies are dry-rotted & barely hanging on.

I'd like to have a waterproof, dust proof, ruggedized outdoor camera too. This video of wind in dunes cost me a camera. Sand got into it. http://youtu.be/0io3S2TK9T4 I should have known better than to get the camera out.

Sewer plugged up. Had to go out of town. Sate police stopped me. Registration expired in March. Time flies. Renew it tomorrow, go to court, probably pay a fine. Driver's side window fell out of its track. Drove a few miles in light rain with window open to a lit place (no working light or flashlight in truck) so I could fix it. Couldn't find my balloon thing* for the sewer. The smell!

Oh the joy.

I got locked out of my new room when my mother cleaned my new house up. She closed my room to copy the keys, but then I forgot to pick them up, due to loving work too much.

So arrived home and had to sleep on a spare matress, no biggie.

Also there was a party going on and many friends were expecting me, but I forgot about that too.... I think I was supposed to DJ there.

Plumbers and sprinkler guys like me have dirty sounding names for a lot of parts and supplies used in the trade.
That thing you're thinking of I would quaintly term a 'dildo*'. (*But I wouldn't ask for it by that name @ the hardware store.)
I don't remember the 'real' name for it either. By any other name it would smell just as sweet. Cough.
I should just stop now.

Reporting back, after 3 fruitless hardware store searches, I finally located the proper diameter bungie cording sold by the foot.
It was right where I thought it would be, at the Army Navy Surplus store.
Almost picked up a new raincoat except the only color they had was Mosquito Buffet Blue. (their favorite color).

Got home and replaced all the black, rotting bungies on the deck of the kayak.

If I had to do over again I would have picked up some shrink tubing to cap the cut ends of the bungie cord.

I was on the edge of the eclipse so it was a crescent of fire here. My attempt to use a pinhole and paper to get an image didn't produce good results. However, an open spot in my screen door frame produced an image on the wall! Here are three photos of that. Wall needs cleaning.

I saw an annular eclipse before. The shadows of leaves made circles. This time I saw that effect on my storage shed.

A forest fire (info) burned 200 houses houses in Ruidoso about 50 miles from here. The lake there is the main water source for my town. They think it was lightning but there is talk of arson. Spacekdet, did they put out the fire in your area?

A German customer gave me wine (this, 2008). Another one did too last year. Is that tradition or cultural thing? They are German Air Force people training here and I'm interested in being polite to our guests and allies.

Yep, took a while but "100 % contained".
Doesn't mean it's 100% out. Bad enough but pales in comparison to the western fires this year.

Mmm, that happens when it rains. I remember rain.

Should have been short term plans but reporting now. Back from hike. Blazin' hot, 102 F or 103 F, about 39 C. Cooled off to 90's. 5 miles. I saw lizards, an orange wasp or bee with yellow stripes, pedestals, insect tracks, and near the recreation area people and dog tracks (but no dogs). I also found this metal ball. It is dented on the bottom and is not corroded. It is around 1.5 feet diameter. The dunes are in a missile testing area so it probably is from a missile or plane. Photos on the hiking blog later.

Well, I did use a cloth to lift it up ... blistering hot. The brochures note that visitors might find wreckage and not to touch it. It was light and hollow. I think it was a pressurized tank for fluids. They retrieve nearly all wreckage but there could be toxic stuff, sharp edges, etc. ... maybe I shouldn't have moved it. This is the second piece of wreckage I've found. I also thought it might be a cover for a scientific instrument.

Rain! Lots of rain in the mountains and some is on this side. A little in town so far. That will help the grass.

I saw the Independence Day parade. It was good but some more interesting or traditional things were missing. Good/Interesting: The ROTC kids (I think) carried the flags, Mustang car club, veteran's motor cycle club, Jeep club, antique cars, horses and riders from various organizations and several floats. Someone picked up a flag that fell from a float/car (I would have. It seemed that no one was going to. Having touched the ground it is to be ceremoniously buried or burned.) The usual police, sheriffs, and fire trucks. Not so good: A surprising number of people didn't put their hands over their hearts or salute during the national anthem (civilians heart, soldiers and vets salute). No fighter plane fly over. No soldiers. No bagpipe group. The music (near announcer stand) was not so great. They had good songs but not the good versions/performers.

Later I saw a Saleen super car in a parking lot. They begin as Mustangs like Shelby's. Maybe it was in the parade.

In the Reporting Back Dept;
Dad's 85th birthday/family reunion/ 3 day bash was by all accounts a success. Hot-ass weather all week/up to Saturday yielded to a cool front rolling thru like a blessing from above on Saturday evening. Some highlights: Cookouts, bonfires, (safely contained in a fire ring) campers and tents in the yard, kids learning how to kayak, in-laws and out-laws, pontoon boat rides, midnight swims, seeing relatives for the first time in years, old friends and new ones, adults who once were kids together now in turn watching their kids play together, long-forgotten pictures in photo albums, cold beer and watermelon on ice.
Life is short, grab it by the horns and ride hard.

Latest hike (metal ball) is on the blog now. Edit: Unnamed sources report that the ball looks like one sent up on balloons for calibrating radar.

I got a check from a law suit settlement vs Google about adwords. Some guy sued them and I guess everyone who used adwords gets something. I used it for my Phosphor Gallery business (closed now). Adwords puts your ads next to the search results based on the search and your keywords. I got one cent.

That was over as quickly as it started. When I looked again they were all gone. I see no police in the alley. ...

Minutes later: The cars of the residents there arrived and a probable unmarked police car (Ford Crown Victoria) drove by. Now some residents are out front.

I don't know them, they're new here, spoken with them a few times, so I won't be asking about it. They seem like rough but mostly ok folks. I'm surprised.

Fortunately that wasn't as exciting as it might have been.

I need to unload my tools from the truck in the alley. Hmm ...

Edit: A few days later there were 4 police cars there in the morning. They were having a discussion some residents in the yard. Nothing since then. There was no mention of either event in the police logs on the newspaper website.

My sister is in the hospital for stomach surgery which went well. Better than expected since the doctors also fixed another problem that they previously thought they couldn't. She may or may not be able to eat solid food. So celiac friendly, gluten free, recipes for soft food and liquids appreciated.

My sister also has celiac disease. It's just amazing what foods have gluten in them. We just had a gluten free pizza the other day, was pretty good. Reminded me of communion cracker though. heh

Hoping everything works out well with your sister.

Reporting back from the Thunder Over Michigan air show.
Weather was warm & humid, but a good breeze helped.
Power outages made for a somewhat choppy flow- there were long stretches with not much flying.
Tons of P-51 Mustangs- fun, but not as impressive as a dozen B-17's in a row like 2010.

How often do they have those airshows?

There was an electricity blackout yesterday while my computer was on. Considering the potential harm off-no-shutdown computer problems I decided to set up the UPS a customer gave. Customer said it doesn't work which usually means they didn't read or didn't understand the instructions. Long term I hope to get one since we apparently plan to get power form faerie farts and unicorn dreams (equals unreliable).

Well it doesn't work. It won't recognize that the battery is present.

Scouted a big ranch for hiking. No keep out signs. Tragic amount of development around there but the ranch is still wild. I didn't get to the ridge I wanted to look from due to rain. There were many arroyos (dirt canyons) which presented barriers but it looks like a good place to hike. Drowning is often a cause of death in the desert since people get into canyons or arroyos then distant rain creates sudden high fast moving water instead of slowly rising and they are surprised and can't get out.

Here's a 30' deep arroyo and a panorama. I should post process them again with less contrast.

I went on a short hike in the mountains. I found bear tracks! Leaving seemed like a good idea so it was a shorter hike than I planned.

Black Bear There are many here but they are seldom seen except around campgrounds. Attacks are rare. I've never seen one in the wild or definite tracks until now. I found a bear's skeleton once. The clear track was just longer than half of my foot. Impressions that may have been cub tracks were there too and the bottom of a canyon left little option for escape so I thought leaving was best.

Reporting back: The big willow that Sandy knocked down is now cut and heaped up.
We managed to get a rope on the parts that were hanging way up there and pulled them down.
Splitting and stacking comes next after we collect some pallets.
Anybody who wants free low quality firewood is welcome to stop by and help themselves.

Should've. The jaw was separate and some teeth had fallen out. The rest of the skull was a little bigger than my head. The bones were clean and some scattered. Scavenger's feast. When I report animal sightings to a friend he says "Why ain't we eatin' 'em?".

Today is Veteran's Day.

The Veteran's Day parade was good. Plenty of participants. Not many spectators due to high winds. There was a flyover by an F-22 which has been missing from many parades, even Independence Day, in the last few years. The Jeep off road club made an interesting formation with their 4-wheel drive vehicles. The large tires stick out from the sides and one would drive up on to the tire of the one next to him. His left front tire would be on top of the outer edge of the other's right front tire and so one making a line of vehicles.

i just wanted to say that iam still alive. My job is taking lots of time and energy, so i really dont go home and do more graphics. Sadly at work its 99% 2D, not 3D. I just made a PF2013 with tS, pretty basic instalation. That was part of my job actually :)

But its realy nice to see this forum so alive. I came back after few months and i see tons of new threads, posts, artwork!

The Thanksgiving turkey is still frozen, as hard as a turkey-shaped boulder, although it's been "thawing" for two days in the fridge.
If it's not softened up by noon tomorrow when it's time for it's appointment with the oven, I'm not sure what I'm going to do.

My sister is out of the hospital and is doing well. She still has a feeding tube until some stuff heals up. Here's a funny thing. The "predigested" food goes in the feeding tube bypassing the stomach but it is labeled "Vanilla". No one has dared taste it.

Potential new Christmas tradition: the Christmas Bomb. My sister's Christmas decorations include a big bowl of ball ornaments with a giant ball ornament in them. The big ornament has a length of cord to hang it. So it looks like a sparkly colorful version of a cartoon bomb with fuse. Maybe it could have a big firecracker and confetti in it and you would light the fuse and boom your room is decorated.
