Hard drive transplant went ok, except the old motherboard/bios was unable to see and thus properly partition the entire 500 gigs on the new drive. Updated XP to the gills which should have resolved the problem but didn't.

Called a local home based computer repair business to see if they could partition it for me.
I specifically asked if they needed the whole machine or just the new HD; they said 'just the drive'.
Made sense to me since it's the old machine that's having trouble seeing past 127 gigs.
When I get there the next day they'd changed their tune and said I should have brought the whole machine. I tried to explain why it was pointless. Got nowhere. The guy wouldn't even come up from the basement and instead sent his roommate up and down the stairs relaying me messages. I left.

Went home, plugged everything back in, and started smelling smoke.
It could have been coming from my ears, but alas, I fear it was the power supply unit.
Out of the frying pan ...and now it's on fire.

Sigh.

Not sure whether to try and replace it or just keep saving pennies for something new-ish.
I mean, how hard can it be to find a replacement for a 10 year old PSU? Should be a snap.
Oh, the irony.

On a more productive note, used the last warm day to get the dock in and stacked for the winter.

Brother found a nice sized bass that had choked to death trying to swallow a smaller fish... the tail of the smaller one was still hanging out of the mouth of the larger one. Took pics, naturally, but can't get them off the camera card until I fix my machine.
Talk about mixed metaphors... the big fish eat the little fish but you also shouldn't bite off more than you can chew.

The screen of my old notebook is fixed by glue. The battery is dead since a long time. It gets very hot. I use it in winter when I watch TV. it warms my legs.

I heard a search that says that long exposures of higher than 37 Cº on the genital region causes sterility, and it quote notebooks as the main factor, since that I didn't put a notebook on my legs '-'

Here in my corner of the Enchanted Mitten, there's been no frost yet.
A little odd, but I don't mind.
The garden still has impatiens and coleus alive and blooming.
Usually they'd be mush by now.

Fall foliage is a little past peak color, and it was a dandy show this year with warm dry days and cool nights.
Storing up pics, will get some online after I get my computer repaired.
Wish I could just keep this borrowed one, it's got about twice the power of mine!

Good photo, as usual.

Clean rocks: Lots of places have just rocks or mostly rocks for a yard so they don't spend money on water. From pebbles, to golf ball size, to softball size. I "weedeat" them to get the grass and weeds.

Fall colors. I've got to go up in the mountains and see the leaves turn.

Still sort of warm, high 70's, here but 50's at night. Occasionally it snows in Late October but this year is fairly standard so far. The next lawn mowings are probably the last of the season. It used to do the desert thing here with hot days and cool or cold nights. That was the clear sky which allowed the heat to radiate away at night. I used to see the Milky Way from my yard. Hmm, maybe still can, have to go look.

So your computer is in the shop? Not that same guy right?

In this case, the same guy (me) is still working on it.
Found a new power supply unit online and it's in transit.

Used borrowed computer to successfully partition my new HD. That's good.
My math(s) were bad so I have 700+ MB leftover free space that didn't get assigned. Not good.
Tried to enlarge existing partition to use it up but Windows wouldn't play along. I guess I'll have to live with it.

New PSU arrived. Not a millimeter extra length on the HD power plugs...barely fit. Not great but ok.
Plug everything back in...and still no boot up.
Damn, damn, damn.

Had the cover off the case to check for further smoke and noticed the CPU fan isn't working.
Computer sat idling without booting for a couple minutes while I jiggled connections.
CPU fan refused to spin and the machine shut itself off. Heat sink was hot w/ no fan going so I hope it was a failsafe that caused the shutdown.

I'm starting to suspect my PSU was probably all right and it was the CPU fan failure that caused the original smoke/shutdown.
Oh well, the new PSU is higher wattage so that's good, but if I really didn't need to replace it... I could have spent half the money on a replacement CPU fan.

Back to the borrowed machine in the meantime.
True to form, I can't get the sound to work on it. Windows reports 'no problems with this device'.... but what the hell does it know.

I shouldn't have spent money but I saw Skyline. Fun but not so good. Worth watching for FX, action, and destruction when it is on TV. Characters, writing, storyline, bad to below average. Acting average for a B movie. It did have some artistic, painting like, views with the FX.

I agree, Facebook is just boring, lol. I only got it because I can upload free images. However, I do have an account that I use frequently on a site called ModDB http://www.moddb.com/. It's a community for people who create mods and games.

This borrowed machine has none of my web tools (or 3D progs) on it so the photoblog is on hiatus.
Still snapping away, just no good way to get them uploaded.

Hoping in January I can swing a new motherboard/processor and resurrect my renderbox. At this point they're the last parts left to replace.

I'm going to a Mexican food restaurant to eat. Partly because using the plunger in the toilet caused my sewer to backed up in the shower. Ah, the appetizing aroma. It had been draining slowly but the main pipe is really clogged now. Plumbers = money. It has to be done though. Needs roto-rooting.

We just had a chat about Blender the other day and my conclusion was that Blender was like an ugly wife.......
She does everything for you and is nice and complete and everything but not a pleasure to work with....or have anything else with.......

I agree with you Rainman. I have tried to understand blender but is not easy. TS have a more intuitive approach to how to use. And joining an course with a lots of other students to discuss problems with learning Blender are, as I think, a good idea . If you want I will come back with more information when the course starts.

I only managed to start just after I moved to stafford in late October, apaprently grading is every four months so I got away with sliding into the grading process. It's jsut a bit frustrating to have to go back down to white every time I start something like this

Sharpened the ice skates.
I must have rode them hard and put them away wet last year because they developed a nasty case of rusticles over the summer despite the dessicant packs in the box.
While the results weren't pretty, oily steel wool and some file work has them looking sharp and ready to go.
Darkness caught up with me before I could try them out, so that's on tomorrow's agenda.
The ice looks fantastic: 'windowpane' clear, smooth, and little to no snow.

Had a 1/2 hour run this evening, 3 miles / 4.8 km, top speed 15.7 mph / 24 kmph.

My truck is at the mechanic's. Fortunately, that is only a few blocks away. My neighbor towed it across town for me. Won't start. Jump start doesn't work. Has plenty of battery power for lights but the flashers and turn signals don't work. Seems like more than one problem. I hope it is not too expensive.

They put in a rebuilt starter. So far so good. Now to get work to pay for it. I think the old one was the original. 250,000 miles on the truck.

Got about an inch of snow overnight. Just enough to slow down the ice skates.

Top speed on the bare ice according to GPS: 16.1 mph.

The new starter made funny noises late yesterday and wouldn't start this morning. Push starting it worked so it is at the mechanic's again. They are closed over the weekend. I need the turn signals and flashers fixed too. I can fix the windshield wipers if I would just decide to get the part needed.

16 mph seemed fast for a lazy old fart like me.
Going to need a lot of wind to clear the snow before I can hit speeds like that again.

My automotive guesses so far haven't been good.
Try replacing the flasher fuse to fix the lights.

Was treated to a steak dinner last night, haven't had one in ages.
Good, but a touch overdone on the outside.
I guess I should have splurged on the sauteed mushrooms.
(reminder: don't look a gift cow in the mouth, just shut up and eat.)

Truck fixed Monday afternoon. Still working now.

I went with my hang gliding friend and some para-glider guys today. They went to a different launch site. The road was really rough so I had fun with the 4 wheel drive truck. It wasn't my friend's truck though so I couldn't go wild with it. He didn't jump because the wind was not good for gliders, two para-glider guys jumped and had "sled rides" of only a few minutes. One had a scary launch but it worked out ok. Another couldn't jump as the wind stopped.

I missed a great photo opportunity since I didn't take the camera. A lady riding a horse stopped to watch the gliders. At sundown horse and rider and mountain and cliff were a silhouette with a great sunset and huge vista in the background. I realized that taking pictures can interfere with being there and experiencing things for yourself.

Hi RJeff. Splododyne is a fictitious company name I made up for a thread in the old anaglifo TS forum. It is a humorous twist on the names of military contractors. The posts had a funny theme like they were super secret documents. Several posters played along and it turned into a neat story. I saved that and I'll have to post it here for entertainment value.

The explodolators are something for TS that I made when someone (V3rd3, Nigec?) was doing an animation with an explosion. They were not easy to adjust and it took ages for the physics to run. I'll post them here some time in case anyone wants them. They were in the anaglifo free stuff thread.

Explodiatory Explodolators are sets of objects with preset physics attributes that would fire projectiles through a scene. They would knock other objects around like an explosion had occurred. That's what some of the videos show.

There's a TS made movie I did for a Christmas card there now.

Well, after turning in my bucket o' spare change and digging into a savings account I managed to finally replace my computer.
Bad news is that none of my old hard drives will plug into it. (at least, not without buying some extra equipment.)
Currently using an external HD to transfer 16 years of stuff... this could take a while via usb.
Good time to get it all reorganized ...then the fun begins as I see how tS flies!

Snow! A little is sticking, not melting on the ground. News says it is snowing a lot in the mountains. Now Sierra Blanca will be Blanca. That gives a nice scenic view from town. It will make the skiers happy too.

Still snowing! I decided it was wise, based on my limited experience in driving in this weather and my worn tires with little tread, to go out for coffee this morning. My favorite local coffee place was not open so I went to Denny's next door. Fortunately I only got stuck once and a guy stopped to help push me off the ice.

I discovered that I've been tracking an animal backwards. I thought the narrow end of their tracks was the back but it is the front. That would explain my inability to find them although I find trails to follow. I've been going away from them instead of toward them.

Back from hike. I went to the place I scouted before. Great rock formations. Tracks of deer, birds, rabbits, cows, horses, people, probably dogs but maybe coyotes. Few wildlife sightings: hawk or such and jackrabbits. Too close to houses but still nice. There was a dirt road were I turned back. Beyond that looked like unpopulated land. I'll try to find that road on maps. If I can drive part of it then I can start a hike already past the houses.

Spacekdet in another thread, "Figure out how to cook corned beef..." I saw horned beef. Well cattle in the bushes. Not sure about horns. What, "corned beef"? Never mind.

The county gave me a birthday present: a summons to jury duty. I don't mind doing my duty as a citizen but I've already been on jury duty twice and been on a jury for three trials.

Crocus is sprouted up but has not bloomed yet.
They're still calling for snow so despite the calendar winter isn't finished.

Still trying to create a decent QTVR...fiddly settings and questionable quality of the results have me wondering if it's even worth it.

Updated both Firefox and IE.
Hating the 'tabs on top' scheme they both use. Dumb.
Removing functionality for the purpose of 'aesthetics' is the new design paradigm!

Of the two, Firefox was the more successful of the upgrades...less tweaking was needed to get it back to a functional state.

Edit: just found the switch in Firefox to reattach the tab to the browser window instead of having it floating around on top. (right click menu, uncheck 'Tabs on top'; tabs back where they should be)
