My neighbors, they of the seven police cars, left. They had been there for months paying no rent and it took that long for legal proceedings for the owner to have them dragged away. The sewer smell went with them. So now some contractors are cleaning and repairing the damage. Well, I found that someone became Samurai Tree Assassin on one of my trees. Some branches went over that property and could damage the roof. They cut more than needed to fix that and didn't contact me first. Contractors say the owner did it.

Good side: The contractors may have some temp work for me. That would give me more income this winter.

Here's hoping you get some good non-sewery smelling neighbors, and some steady work.

Tree situation sounds familiar- our neighbor pulled the same trick.
Setup: We have a nice row of thick cedar trees that run about 4 feet inside our property line.
For years, despite being asked not to, neighbor has been parking his trailer right up next to then, backing into them, randomly hacking a branch off, etc.;
he just can't seem to understand where the line is.
Finally, this fall, his wife came over and said they were hiring a tree contractor to trim them for us. How nice.
She said the reason was that 'squirrels are jumping onto our roof from them'. Oh Noes.
Apparently she's never seen one run up a wall, but I digress.
My dad said, fine, legally anything over the line (4 feet from the trunks, mind you) is fair game. If they want to look at stubs, that's their choice.

I spent a couple hours with the measuring wheel and flags and spray paint establishing the property line, handed them a printed property line map from the county, discussed what 'setback' meant, etc.

You can guess what they did: yep, cut them right back to the trunk on 'their' side. At least this time they cleaned up the debris instead of just throwing it back over the line.

Whatever, now they have a great view of my compost pile and the back of the shed, which is where I suddenly decided was an excellent place to store the extra garbage cans. Enjoy your new vista, jerks!

Well, it is best for trees to cut limbs near the base but they did not have permission to do that. Are the trees balanced now? That is, is there considerably less weight on the side trimmed sides than your sides?

I called the cable company about cable internet and phone. Looks like I can get that for about half the price of my current set up. Problem: they use Google for the email. Google is evil. So if I go with this company I'll not use their email and set myself up a private address on my business website.

They are most definitely not balanced.
Several are leaning pretty good, but I don't mind. They arch pleasantly overhead. From his side it looks like crap so that's ok too.
I suspect the roots died after he widened and paved his driveway. It used to be an area of lawn, then wood chips as he started parking cars & trailers there. When we had the street paved (private road), he had the pavers expand his drive right up to the property line. They get so tall and the wind pushes them over.
They still provide shade and screening from where I sit, so what's done is done.

Reporting back, the lake is frozen over. Not enough that I trust it to skate on, but I did venture out a few feet to test it.
While it held me, I won't be going out over any deep water quite yet.
Been two local ice 'rescues' and one 'recovery' after the victim spent the night with the fishes he was trying to catch. Left his life vest in the truck.

Last place we lived, we had trees that shed this sap that attracted these little bugs. The little bugs attracted angry hornets. These were in the backyard at the place at 'Green Valley Ranch' . Funny thing; the backyard had no grass; just a 3 inch deep pile of dead leaves and some other crap. Looked more like the outer walls of the penitentiary. Yeah; nice house but the yard sucked. So the homeowner lost the house (I don't think he wanted to pay the mortgage on a failing 'investment'; he had money to open a restaurant, travel, etc. etc. ). So right before we moved out, this hag neighbor who had bitched about these trees with a 8 inch diameter trunk at the base, thinking they would ruin her foundation (her house was quite far away from these trees) threw a branch into the yard after we left. I had to return to get the cleaning supplies. I was tempted to throw it back into her yard, as close to her crappy ass house as possible but I didn't. What a tool. Roots don't stretch that far. Duh.

Anyway heh just wanted to share.

Checked the ice on the upper lake. This consists of hacking at it with an axe until:
a) the axe breaks through into water or,
b) me and the axe break through into water.
c) measure by eyeballing it.

Result: about 4-5 inches of thickness with only a wet axe.

Run back for the skates, a quick pass with a file and off I go.
Stayed in close to the shore where there was a strip of snow-free ice.
Didn't go out (much) past the drop-off.
GPS let me know I put in 5.2 miles before I realize I should have had on better socks.
Feels good, man.
Woke up today to more snow overnight and now temps above freezing.
Nice while it lasted!
My plan is that the coming warmup next weekend will melt off the snow and resurface everything, and then freeze up again yielding a giant, smooth ballroom floor. Should be easy, right?

Time for me to report back

Still alive...still kicking Just not a lot of time for 3D work.

10,000 word report in for tommorow, a few more with a couple of thousands worth.

Spent Christmas back at home and took my girlfriend with me. We saved up some mony and had a holiday to Switzerland which was great, her first time on a commercial plane.

Got accepted at Cranfield University for a masters degree in aerospace...providing I hit target grades

I'm on my new internet plus digital phone service. Works fine. I'll save $25 to $30 a month compared to my old setup. My econo cable modem deal gives me 8mbs which is great compared to 1 previously (phone line limitation). Only down side so far is I can't use my old rotary phone with this system. I like the old fashioned phone.

Still around and hectically busy, just not with 3D

Haven't done something in months, guess its due to a lack of enthusiasm to switch to new 3D app since I've given up on old tS... mostly a time thing though, heavy work loads at the office and too little time for anything else after hours... still hoping though, get some nice ideas from time to time which just gets left behind when I remember I first have to learn a new app like Blender or something...

New year resolution for 2013? Take the first step and plunge into a new tool to get 3D cracking again!

Reporting back, wild winter weather roller coaster keeps rolling along.
Big thaw followed by a plunge back into the deep freeze.
Waiting for the ice to firm up again before I dare lashing the ice skates back on; it looks pretty good as long as we don't get much Lake Effect snow dumped on us.

In the meantime I'm trying to get caught up on several years worth of renders and get them webified and posted online in galleries.

I took a ride in a 1970 Dodge Challenger (in 1970), slap stick automatic.
(edit: Challenger is Dodge's equivalent of the Cuda)

Didn't know the meaning of slap stick as it applied to cars, but found out when the driver slapped that stick backwards and I was pinned to my seat. heh

I remember 1972 in June when I visited the Ford production in Detroit and they showed us around
and at the end of the guided tour they had this little car on the parking lot.. no not one hundreds of them..
I was 11 at that time and pretty nosy.....
So I left back my familiy with the guides and mounted one of these ponys....
When I took the seat I nearly had a heartattack because an alarm went off.... I thought..
only a few years later when it was introduced into other cars I found out it was just the fasten seatbelts beap that went off......

Saw Mr. Wood Duck for the first time so maybe he knows something I don't. Hopefully he knows that eventually we'll get above 32 F.

Great stuff in the Ford museum. No major museums around here but there are some interesting small ones.

Hang gliding expedition to the mountains was a nice break from work but uneventful. Three pilots. One guy jumped in high wind though others told him not to and that they (experts) would not jump in that. Despite the strong wind there was little lift and their flights were brief.

after chatting on IRC for years, I finally met Staffan Hellström (of UV Cow fame) and I showed him around one of my favorite corners of the Mitten State.

Spacekdet, sometimes it seems like you all go everywhere in boats in the Mitten State.

My sister is in the hospital for another operation. Stuff from her previous stomach troubles didn't heal and she can't eat regular food unless it does. So it seemed she would always have a feeding tube. The tube caused complications so now there is less risk to operate and fix it than to keep the tube. (The "tube food" is labeled "vanilla". She tasted it and said it tastes awful but with a little vanilla). The operation is expected to go well and be far less troublesome than the first one but it is risky at her age. She will be able to eat normally again and have no tubes afterwards.

Reporting back: what's become an annual family reunion/birthday party was executed mostly without a hitch.
Weather cooperated beautifully. Nephew's high school graduation party on Saturday, family reunion on Sunday.
Still felt like there wasn't enough time to visit with everyone. Picking up the pieces even now, 2 weeks after.
What a swell part(ies) that was.

Currently watching the excellent Ken Burns film on the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

What a story, and I love the music. Whole soundtrack here.

My sister had the operation and it looks like she will be ok and able to eat regular food again. Still in the hospital and still has an infection but that seems to be under control now.

It was a happy day indeed when my Mom had her feeding tube removed and she was back on real food.
Amazing how quick the procedure was... rip, drip, snip, clip, then out the door and off to lunch.

Man, I hated unclogging that thing.

My sister is home now. Her stomach is fixed and she can eat regular food. She complained about the hospital food. If I hadn't eaten regular food in a year I'd eat hog slop and think it was delicious. She still has a tube for something, not sure what, but it is temporary.

I was a nervous wreck during the wildfire near our cabin.
Good luck and favorable wind and lots of tough work by firefighters saved the day that time- hope your situation works out the same.

It's a sobering thought exercise: what do you need to grab if you have to get out in a hurry? What is truly important?

So, I went to a Mexican food restaurant and got a combo plate. You can specify red or green sauce for each of the items that get sauce. I got the milder green sauce all around. No atomic red sauce. The waitress went to the order window and gave the cook a #1 combo order and noted, "no cowboy".

I's funny and sad at the same time. Maybe there is a French word for that.
They're our oldest, oldest neighbors and both of them are aged mid-90's so it's not like I was going to go out there and get into fisticuffs over it.
Alzheimer's has taken hold so that's what I'm blaming.
He did come over later and apologize.
The plants were morning glories so without a doubt they'll be growing right back.
Still, kind of bad timing for the hummingbirds who are putting on weight for the migration and just lost a big bushy beautiful food source.

Reporting back: took the kayak for a post-sunset cruise the other evening wearing my new highway-grade reflective paddling jacket and GloWear hat.
Apparently it works because I could hear people on shore freaking out: "WHAT IS THAT THING?"
I'd like to imagine I looked like a UFO with flailing tentacle arms skittering across the water.

Today is Constitution Day in the USA. For those in other countries or educated in US public schools (like me):

The Constitution is the document that created the federal government of the USA and defines how it functions. The Constitution contains The Bill of Rights which may be the most important document yet written. Limited government and the rights of individuals, now forgotten, are what made America great.

The colonies declared independence from Britain on July 4, 1776.

In 1781 the Continental Congress and the states approved the Articles of Confederation as the defining document of the central government of the USA.

The Articles were found inadequate and deputies (delegates) were sent form the states to Philadelphia to improve the Articles in 1787. They soon decided that a new founding document was needed and created the Constitution of the United States.

Many were concerned that there were not sufficient protections against tyranny or over powerful government. In 1789 the Constitution was amended to provide more definite protection of our rights and in hopes of restraining the central government from tyranny. These first 10 amendments comprise The Bill of Rights.

Reporting back, the big hawk ( I thought it might be an osprey but I don't think so now) got itself another duck, almost in the same spot as the last one.
Came back to feed on it again today after the gang of crows had breakfast. Later on a smaller hawk picked over what was left.
No wonder the crows follow the hawk around.

Went to a coffee shop this morning (cheap not fancy). Talked with a guy there about how names often had or have a meaning in some language or culture. So "Hello Rachel" to us means "Hello person whose identifier label is 'Rachel'" but in olden days you said "Hello Female Sheep". What would this be like now? ... "Hi Carburetor!" "PCI Modem Card! I haven't seen you in ages!" "Oh, here comes Glorious Rays of the Sun. I hate him. What a snob."

Now my websites are messed up. The server had trouble and now I get internal server error messages. Sometimes just by visiting the site and it is impossible to update Wordpress. I updated WP manually. No change. Contacting Midphase (host). Edit: Host tech support fixed it. They are good about that.

Lake froze hard enough to hold me up.
Chopped a hole with the axe, a good five inches thick.
Skates on!
Calm night during the initial freeze resulted in clear plate glass type ice. Looked fantastic.
Waiting for it to thicken up, we got just a skim of snow on it. Drats.
Not bad, but just enough to slow you down a little.
Cuts down on the vertigo when you can't see right thru into blackness as you sail across the drop-off over deep water.

So I went out twice in one day, the second time after dark. Was hoping for some of that bright moonlight but the clouds were too thick. Still, very smooth and enjoyable.
Kids these days don't know what they are missing, because I didn't see anyone else out there.
Glad I went because the next day it snowed, and snowed, and snowed.
Sigh. So much for skating.
All I can hope for is a good warmup followed by another freeze. Nature's Zamboni.

Like a fool, I started shoveling the snow to clear an ice skating rink.
I'm now too tired to skate.

You can get legal incandescent light bulbs in the US after the idiotic ban. The ban has a loop hole for heavy duty service lights. The big manufacturers will keep making them until they are banned too and this guy is manufacturing them http://www.brightlights-inc.com. A guy in Germany was getting around their ban by selling incandescents as small electric heaters. I think they shut him down.
