Problems running Dribble...need a license!!

Post by splinters »

Anyone still using Dribble and managed to get a server license? They run out every six months or so and mine has expired. However, the site has been updated and there seems to be no way of getting a license. The new version now come with a free unlimited server license but I have been unable to get anything newer than version 8.5 to run with tS.
Any help or advice here is greatly appreciated.

the shaders for tS probably need re-compiling to run in the newer delight version.
I am not sure if clintonman has a handle on that one or there might be too many changes to the render engine and the whole package needs a re-code or re-compile , I don't know for sure.

maybe a serious time for some programmer to get source code of dribble and adjust it for another (FREE) renderman renderer.

Looks like Clinton recompiled the shaders for version 9 here:

Ok, I installed 3Delight, reinstalled Dribble and copied the shaders but I am having the same problem as last time I tried version 9: I get a progress indicator (%) but nothing renders on screen. If i render to file I get a plain black Jpeg and a .tiff file which looks almost like a mask or very plain/basic render with no textures or backgrounds etc. Is this to be expected or am I installing/running it wrong somehow?

I have not tried it yet but if you included the context menu options during the installation of 3Delight, you can right click the shaders with the sl extension and choose Compile with 3Delight.
When you do this, it creates a file with the sdl extension with the same name.
Edit: Here are the Dribble complied shaders version 9.0.84
Copy & Replace these to the 3Delight shaders folder IE: C:\Program Files\3Delight\shaders

I downloaded and installed dribble and 3delight and it renders in TS but I get no shadows or correct textures, then I noticed that the dos popup window was showing error but the window does not show the complete message errors.
See below for dos popup errors.

Seems to work for me with the Dribble Shaders complied with 3Delight version 9.0.84...
In this capture the Test.rib was exported from tS76 using Dribble, right clicked and then selected Render with 3Delight. Sames results inside tS76.

True, if I could reach down the cable and kiss you...I would. Everything works perfectly now. I guess I don't need to renew the license any more either. You are a star. Many, many thanks.

LoL... I am glad you are on that side of the pond then. Ewwwwwww! ;-)
This is the first time I have tried Dribble. I did not care for the older version of 3Delight with the setup and license.
Got any dribble materials you want to share? Need to come up with a complete library as alot of tS materials do not work.

Well my luck is not as good.
Has anyone gotten 3Delight and Dribble to run on
a Computer with Win 7 64 bit? The second I try to render with Dribble/3Delight
trueSpace instantly crashes.
I have used the latest Dribble ver 1.04wip080808, 3Delight 9.0.84 with the latest
shaders compiled by trueBlue.

Make sure you have ran the Uninstall for 3Deleight and Dribble. The Uninstall for Dribble is in the tsx/dribble folder.
Install 32 bit Dribble and reboot your PC. <- Important!
Before installing/Loading, and using Dribble, I would try to use 3Delight first by exploring the examples folder. right click the RIB files and select Render with 3Delight. I had to Unblock a few of the 3Delight programs.
Install Dribble (I would use tS76), Load the TSX.
Make sure that Lightworks is selected in Model.
Let's go render, Man!

Well I did everything except install tS 7.6 and it still crashes.
I am still curious if anyone else can get this to work using tS 7.6 Beta8 and Win7 64 bit?

quick reply to self,, have now got hdri working , for some reason even though I installed new delight , the tdlmake exe was pointing to an older version of delight ( or x64 standalone version) uninstalling old version triggered win firewall to unblock new version of tdlmake in 3delight so all is well ..

Not sure if it helps Steinie but I am running on Win 7 64 bit. However, you do have to use the 32bit version of Dribble. I am also on the 'official' 7.6 whatever version that was.

The license doesn't expire? That's good news. The fact that they could stop issuing new licenses at any time wasn't very comforting to me.
What did you do differently than before that got the whole thing working for you?

It did work for me, but I recall having some kind of trouble. Like it didn't work then suddenly started working. I'll see if I can find anything in my notes about it. I plan to get the latest 3Delight this weekend and try it out.

Hey Paul,
Hope everything is great your way. I just noticed that tdlmake.exe is Blocked in Administrative Tools/Windows Firewall with Advance Security/Inbound Rules.
Odd when I was rendering rib files with 3Delight, I noticed that there were no tdl files (Baked Textures) being created. But I do notice them be created when rendering from tS76/Dribble.

Thanks for checking out my problem with Win7 64 bit and trueSpace 7.6 Beta 8.

I'll do some additional testing tonight and see what you guys can come up with also.

Well trueSpace 7.6 also crashes.
I don't need to run a license server right? Since there is one free one?

I do not think there is a License Server with this version.

Can you render an example 3Delight rib file?
C:\Program Files\3Delight\examples\arealight\cornell.rib
Right click the cornell.rib file and select Render with 3Delight.

trueBlue, when I right click and render with 3Delight as you asked, it works.
If I use the Dribble interface to render within trueSpace it crashes trueSpace.
Any ideas?

I will assume that we are using 32 bit 3Delight. Is everyone using the Stand Alone 32bit or the Maya 32 bit version if you are
running Win 7 64 bit?

Run Regedit and locate HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/cool powers/dribble

Does it look like this?
trueBlue, Yes mine looks like yours. C:\Graphics\trueSpace76\ts
FHembree, My GI is clear but doesn't make a difference. If you use the right click to render, don't you loose all the features of Dribble?
clintonman, thanks for checking!

The only odd thing is that it does start to render for about a second or two then crashes trueSpace.
Do you guys add the shaders with the existing ones in 3Delight or do you replace them?
Do you leave the "src" directory in the shaders directory?

Try instead of rendering the file directly in TS use the icon to create a rib file from TS and then try to render the rib file by right clicking and rendering with 3Dlight. TS crashes with me if I have all of the options in GI turned on in dribble.

Turn off all of the options in "gi" as I have problems of them causing TS to crash. That may recommendation to see if they are causing a problem as they are for me.

Nothing useful to report. I did a fresh install with the new 3Delight 9.0.84 and a fresh install of dribble. The only odd thing I found was the default install path for dribble was "C:\truespace761\\tS". I changed it to "C:\truespace761\tS\". Then copied trueBlue's freshly compiled shaders over the dribble ones. Did some test renders.
win7 64bit sp2, 32 bit 3Delight 9.0.84, shaders compiled for 9.0.84

Sorry...trueBlue.
Well now it Works!
I think the problem is that I would select only one user to have access to 3Delight and
not set it to Global. I decided to use Global and now it is rendering without crashing.
Thanks for everyone's help!

Not for me :( Rendering via the right click works fine. But as soon as I try to render anything in Truespace with it (or save it) Truespace crashes (most of the time without rendering anything, somtimes it starts to do some squares, stopps ans crashes then..) Any Ideas?
