dribble released to the community

Post by SiW »

(read my later message for a more sensible post)

Dear trueSpace lover,

You may have heard that Simon Windmill, reacting to a desire to make games instead of boring user interface coding, has been evaluating one of the products he produces and making the difficult decision to reduce development in certain areas. To zero. In the area of actually working on it at all.

It is with pleasure however that I have to tell you that dribble is one of the products affected. As a consequence, you will see the free availability of the source code for dribble. For example, there will be no phone or email support offered for dribble by Simon, and the web site has also been affected. In that it's not there anymore. The date is absolutely fixed, as it is right now.

While we are working to maximize positive impact for the community, here is the pertinent link:

Thank you very much Simon!

Just so we are clear...
If Development continues will that person or group be allowed to sell?
or
Is this for existing owners so that they can continue fixing issues if they can.

You plan to come back to Dribble in some future time or life?
Maybe as a 2060 Pontiac Aztek Warrior? (new mixed race of machine and human pathetic existence...) :lol:

Yeah was thinking about that.. maybe owners of the present version could be beta testers for any bug fixes?
I've only had it a month, financially it would be a bit of a bummer to have to buy it again

Okay, so time for a slightly less.. eccentric post on the subject.

I am giving over dribble to the trueSpace community in the hopes that it can be maintained and improved upon by the community and for the community. I am not ruling out any further development by myself, but I really do hope you guys take the reins.
Steinie wrote:If Development continues will that person or group be allowed to sell?
Ehhhh.. I would expect the community to work this out themselves. I'd be a bit miffed if someone made a few fixes and then asked for money before giving it out, but I'm sure nobody would want to buy it if that were the case. But if someone spends months on some great Workspace integration? I wouldn't mind if people wanted to pay for it, even if that's not really what I had in mind from releasing this. Besides, my donation button will always be there if anyone thinks I should be getting something for my work ;)
nigec wrote:I've only had it a month, financially it would be a bit of a bummer to have to buy it again
I always worry when I do something like this that anybody who bought it is going to be pissed off, so I do hope you know that you are the people who are making this possible, as well as one of the main reasons behind the decision - I'm hoping that the product will be improved for you in ways that I can't.

Thank you Simon for the work you have done on this. With 3Delight under constant development it must be a problem for one person to keep up with the changes to shaders etc let alone develop better integration with tS (for workspace maybe hint hint to any who are looking at taking the coding of dribble on. ;) )

For any long time tS user who didn't buy dribble previously - shame on you! It really is a marvelous tool and wasn't that expensive. I think the best render I remember seeing that I know was done with it was transients chocolates. (Is that around here somewhere, transient?)

Perhaps with or without further development we will see more dribble wonders. Best wishes for future endeavors SiW

Yep, I'm still here (rejoice! heh heh). Anyway, here is that image. I've got more coming, but that's been the case for six+ months. Once I finish off my IT bridging course, I'll get around to finishing them, hopefully. I've also got a few Shade images I want to get done.

Thats the one! So benji = transient or was I wrong about who did it?

Is it just my imagination but does the item with a tS logo disappearing on the lefthand side look more like a little block of foil wrapped cheese than a chocolate!? :lol: 3Delight/dribble does a great job of dof and its quick with it - faster than anything else I've used.

As far as not getting any rendering done - I completely understand. My spare time has been so tied up with other things and 3d so time consuming I haven't done anything except fiddle for months. My big frustration really is that my ideas are always way beyond my ability to tackle them............ oh well nothing ventured nothing gained. I should start doing a project at work during lunchtimes. Start with a bit of modeling and see how it goes.

Look forward to seeing some new stuff from you when it arrives benji.

Got it but when I tried to just build it I get errors of missing header files:

#include "tSButton.h"
#include "wfmmshaders.h"

are these files available?

Edit: more missing headers...
#include "NumberSpinner.h"
#include "tSCheckBox.h"

Good news, everyone. Simon told me how to find the missing files. :bananacool2: If I'm able to build, it I'll look at the Dribble bug reports section for any known issues and sample scenes showing those issues. My current issue is that the user interface is getting cut off on the right side.

I used TortoiseSVN to download the freecp commons folder which contained the missing files.

Hi v3rd3. I would suggest keeping both the Tortoise SVN client, and AnkSVN installed.
They compliment each other. I've tried AnkSVN but don't care for it. I will try working with it more. But, it may work for you.

I was planning to use Ankh because it can be integrated with VS2005. It is my understanding that I could still install Tortoise as well as it would be "just another client"....

I was planning on using Tortoise for some python work.

Yes, that is correct; AnkhSVN integrates with VS2005. It's ok; just not my cup of tea.
I got a little confused because the terminology used for operations appeared a little
different from the standard SVN terminology. Maybe I can just chalk it up to lack of experience. :)

pls, let me put a lame q. I have had no time to check out the dribble so I know very little about it. Now I would like to reveal its secret. But I dont know where to download the latest version. To try it.
To my knowledge, its free and open source now, right? (judging from the thread name)
its a export plugin for any renderman complient renderer, ok? for workspace or modeler?
have anyone tryied it with a pixie renderer, which is opensource? http://sourceforge.net/projects/pixie/"

mainly:
- where to download it (the latest and greatest working version) and get the lastest info
- what all do I need to check it (some extra dll, something other installed?)
- will I figure out how to use it?

thank you, coz iam confused a little bit.

There is currently no installer for dribble available. All you can get from the Coolpowers page is the source code. Clinton has released a first working *.tsx version. And there are the needed shaders available too. But the rest of the package is missing. Including an important BTNexgenIPL32.dll. Means the dribble plugin is freeware now, but it is disfunctional yet in case you don`t have the purchased dribble installer.

Clinton has started further development of dribble. So you should ask him about his roadmap :)

Tiles, do you mean that Dribble's installer from the purchased Dribble version isn't free while the source is ?

@Clinton : Dribble generates *.TDL files. One for each texture file.
When rendering scenes that contains a number of texture files spreaded all over the hard disk it, we quickly get our computer filled with new *.TDL files, that are often 3x bigger than an original jpg bitmap file.
Dribble should offer an option to automatically remove these files after rendering ; or at least group them into one folder.
What do you think ?

tiles: thanks for clearing it out...

But I still dont know why free version is not functioning when it was once done. If it becomes free, it should be legal just to compile it the way it was for money, but to download it legally and freely. Or the released source code is not complete??

Clinton: pls, can you make some "betaversion" from what you have now? Just for us, who cant use it, because dont have the previous payware version? It really makes me curious :)

hey and many thanks for developing it!

FYI, components of Dribble are found in the common directory of the freecp source. Therefore the first job is to identify and incorporate these dependencies into the Dribble source.

The source code download includes the installer inside a zip archive.

after you unrar:
..\dribble_source_092509\dribble\install\dribble-1.04wip080808.zip
unzip that file to find the installer.

You may be having problems because you did not use the setup program.

btw: clintonman - is there a possibility to add more renderers to a dribble (add a path and so) and then select which one to use?
I found another great opensource renderer - Pixie http://www.renderpixie.com/"
Is it possible to use it via dribble?

ps: i know Iam annoying! ;D
I don't know. When I look at some of the code it looks like Simon was thinking about other renderman renderers, so maybe it's possible.

btw: is the caustics currently working? I cant make it work, dont know why. I turn everything on or just the causitcs switch, do whatever. Use default glass shader with transmission on and nothing is displayed but nicely rendered transparent shadows.

Unfortunately, I don't think caustics has ever worked in Dribble, from memory.

Clinton, did you ever get this to compile successfully?
