Re: Steinie's U3DA Game "What is it?"
Let's see if Wolfram image ID can play this game. http://www.imageidentify.com
It ID'd things from this thread as:
The belt buckle from the originial What Is It: machine
Chain cleaner: device
Airplane crew sleeper: instrumentation
Fold up seat: electric battery
Vaccination needle: wand
Uranium mine: teleostan (a fish)
I tried captcha images and it ID's them as "bacteria".
It identified Steinie's avatar (half face w/sunglasses) as "instrument".
My avatar (ruby on sword of tyrants) as "measuring device".
Draise's avatar (his photo) as "invertebrate". I think it doesn't like you.

Its weed eater plastic twine. I know because I just saw it at home depot. I think it is about 990 feet.
I was just purchasing about 25 feet on a much smaller roll.

Re: Steinie's U3DA Game "What is it?"
This will be the hardest puzzle I have submitted here. Only ONE of you will be able to figure this one out. (almost impossible for everyone else)
WHY is it here?
Unless you are Sherlock Holmes (or one member here) you will have no chance figuring out this one.
IF the ONE member here figures this out and wants others to figure this out I will give out clues.

For flexibility?
I was gonna say for "jumping to conclusions", "a leap of faith" or "bending over backwards" - all of which require great flexibility.
Or course, since it is for dogs - "...immer der Hund die beste Vorgehensweise für Zaun Springen". I had to mangle another language since it makes no sense to say it in my own.

Fruit Fast and Cherry Flex are products of Brownwood Acres which is in Michigan near Manitou Island where Spacekdet likes to camp. I think Steinie is going to Michigan to buy Cherry juice and will meet Spacekdet there. Toolshed ... hmm.

Re: Steinie's U3DA Game "What is it?"
The question is why is the Cherry Flex here in the what is it game?
Clues:
- One person here is thought able to solve it without the extra clues
-- Presumption: the one person is not Steinie
-- Spacekdet "I have no clue" so he is not the one person
- Cherry Flex
- Fruit Fast
- Tool Shed
- A pitcher and a pail
- I heard Cherry Borkum Riff pipe tobacco is top shelf...
Thinkin's: Who is the other person? That would be a clue. Spacekdet and Steinie live in the same part of the country but he is not the person. Dragneye lives in that region too. Since Spacekdet is not the one person the location of Brownwood Acres near Manitou Island is coincidental. Cherry Flex, Cherry Borkum, and Fruit Fast are all cherry products.
Current Guess:
Steinie has a cherry tree (a guess, I don't know that). He will pick cherries putting them in his pail. Ladder and pail were in the tool shed. He will make cherry juice and put it in the pitcher and share with the other person.

Re: Steinie's U3DA Game "What is it?"
Steinie is going to meet Spacekdet at Brownwood Acres to pick cherries. Afterward they will have a pitcher of beer at a strip club called "the toolshed" that has something to do with Feb 21, 2005. Which does not answer "why is it here?".

Re: Steinie's U3DA Game "What is it?"
That is a good tool shed picture Spacekdet.
My first impression is a sprinkler. The ones in buildings in case of fire. I looks heavy duty for one of those so maybe it is a big one for places like warehouses. There also are no "fan blades" to spray the water. F593C reveals that the bolt is ... a bolt. So, first guess is fire sprinkler.

It must be one of those bird feeder and squirrel shredder combo machines.
I think it runs on earthworm castings, either that or coffee grounds. Perhaps we could get a demonstration of its mighty power?

It will shred, sprinkler is close, no tweety birds.
I hoped to find the size of the bolt to guess the size of the thing. "F593C" is a type of stainless steel. "THE" means Tong Hwei Enterprises manufactured it. So no clue about its size. Stainless is not as strong as regular steel and F593C is not exceptional for corrosion resistance. So corrosion is the dominant factor for using this bolt but neither force nor corrosion large. I think the device is exposed to fresh water. "Sprinkler is close" indicates that the item's function could be related to sprinklers or water.
The circular items are off center. That is, they don't share the same center.
The yellow ring is out of focus as is part of the outer grey ring. The rest is in focus. The yellow ring must be closer to the camera than rest. The outer grey ring is probably a cylinder threaded on the inside. Something treads into that cylinder. Possibly a cap or pipe.
The painted part has a grain like sand cast metal, one ring has machine tool marks and the paint fills part of the threads on a screw. I think the yellow ring is no larger than an orange.
The square-head screw in the upper left extends through the casing and the outer grey ring to press on an inner grey ring. A screw is used like that to connect rotating parts such as an axle and pulley or secure a part inserted in another.
Deeper in the object is an area with probably 6 openings that is rusted or coated with something.
So I think:
- the part in the photo is no larger than an orange
- the device is related to water
- there may be rotating parts
- the 6 openings are rusted
- a pipe connects to it
"Berkeley". Likely a brand name. Hmmm.

Whoop! Whoop!
indeed, it's a 7.5 hp (yipes!) water pump destined for installation at a local resort.
You were looking at a close-up of the intake. 'About the size of an orange' was just about right.
Here is a little slice of the 'WIP' running on the temporary pump. Currently waiting for the electricians to do their thing bringing us power before we install the new Berkeley.
It's going to supply the irrigation system that we're installing around the lodges in the photo.
Those heads are 65 feet apart, and we'll be able to run 8 of them at a time. < Insert Tim The Tool Man grunting sounds >

Re: Steinie's U3DA Game "What is it?"
Correct. Movie set. This is Blondie Street at "The Ranch" a Warner Brothers studio back lot where many TV shows and some movies were filmed. The original buildings were built in the 1930's or 40's. There have been fires and only a few of the original homes remain. It used to be much larger with city areas, a western area, and more. The top photo shows the Partridge Family house and, to the right, the I Dream of Jeanie house. The Jeanie house is now the office for Ranch operations. Most of the houses are unfinished inside with interiors filmed on sound stages. The Bewitched house, home of my youthful celebrity crush Elizabeth Montgomery, is here. Griswald's from Vacation, Lethal Weapon, Gidget, Flying Nun. Interesting that we keep seeing this neighborhood in movies and TV but don't know it.
Good eye on the golf cart Steinie. Another clue is that there are no lines in the street, no house numbers, and no traffic signs.
Here is a mini tour https://youtu.be/Fn63pr_ri_8. I think there are still guided tours for the public.

It may be a splash guard for a urinal under a black light. Not that I've had any experience with photographs of that. (cough)

Spacekdet, No but that would be a good what is it thing. Your guess is in the general direction of the right answer.

Is it a reverse lightning strike? The ground shoots up a series of lighting bolts that are absorbed by the clouds above. (I just made all that up)

That was too easy. It is the model number of some Fat Man bombs and of the gadget, the first one. I've been to Trinity Site. It is about 100 miles north of here. When I get my website back online I'll post a link to my entry about it.trueBlue wrote:A very "Fat Man" with a SAD history?

That was too hard. Clues: distances to roughly locate the place, it is a landmark, "use other doors ..." could be looked up on the web. The doors are in the McDonald ranch house at Trinity Site. I have an urge to visit there again. It is open to the public again in April I think.

Looks like a satellite photo of some meteor craters but is probably some kind of mining operation.

Hydraulic fracturation fields in the US.
They tried to do the same in the place I live (Ardeche land in South-East of France), but the population's mobilisation against the project could force the companies to step back.
In France, unlike in the US, the deep ground property is not own by the people but by the state, therefore the gas companies couldn't knock at individual doors to get permits to drill : they had to pass through local and national representatives, who were under pressure because of our mobilisation.
I suggest an other game : try to find where I am standing in the photo below

Re: Steinie's U3DA Game "What is it?"
Not mining but that's a good guess Mikom.
Not fracking Emmanuel. That has no visible effect on the surface that is different from regular oil activity. Maybe fewer pumps and roads in the long term. I own some rural property in Texas (inherited) and the mineral rights (subsurface resources/volume is mine too) and the considerable tax burden for it. It's the only part of Texas with no oil. Mineral rights are common for rural land in Texas but not all US land owners have mineral rights. Prospectors contact me sometimes wanting to drill exploratory holes. It is heavily forested, wild, and I keep it for sentimental reasons so I don't want it disturbed. If it was a cleared ranch or farm I'd let them drill if the money was good. I recently got an interesting offer though. They'll drill on a neighbor's ranch then get oil from all around. Horiz. drilling I think. They want rights to the oil that would presumably come from my volume (there is none) but would not go onto my surface.
I think Emmanuel is the one holding a sign that says, "I'm holding a sign".
So what is in the satellite photo and where's Waldo? Uh, I mean Emmanuel?

This broken chain is at the feet of the statue called "Liberty Enlightening the World". The Statue of Liberty.
@Steinie Possibly. The sculptor is thought to have modeled the statue after his mother but it may have been inspired by Libertas, Roman goddess of freedom.
@Spacekdet You're right! Or you would have been right!

Re: Steinie's U3DA Game "What is it?"
It is a locomotive engine. Possibly steam powered. It has a blade that functions like a bulldozer or grader to move dirt. Not aerodynamic and has windows in front. That looks like a design for moving slowly with high visibility ahead. The tracks are supported by logs which could mean the track is temporary. There are trees in the valley but the land above is barren and flat. I believe it is farmland. The slope into the valley is precise and has no sign of erosion so it is new. Some bulldozed material has been pushed into the valley.
Is this work to build the railroad or for another purpose? Since the rails are at the level of the flat land and the logs look temporary I think the rails will be removed later. If not building a railroad then what is it doing?

You have a lot of things right but the flat ground being farmland isn't one of them.
The clue to unlock the mystery: it was photographed in Rogers City, Michigan.

Re: Steinie's U3DA Game "What is it?"
I'm going to call it a joint win because you are both right.
The tracks are indeed temporary, the train is dumping the waste rock/ tailings from the limestone mining and then is using the blade to push them over the edge of the slope. As the edge expands the tracks get moved and the process continued. Piled higher than the treetops and twice as deep.
No doubt all done with trucks and heavy diesel equipment nowadays.
Here is the mine as seen from space:
https://binged.it/2t6hz4s"
I used Bing instead of Google maps because Bing maps pictures a boat being loaded with stone at the port of Calcite.
Fun fact: Ships, no matter their size, are locally called 'boats' on the Great Lakes. 'Salties' are ships that have come in from the Atlantic via the Saint Lawrence Seaway.
Here is another aerial view of a portion of the mine:
