Mix Pix From The Stix

Post by spacekdet »

Posted this 'elsewhere' but thought I'd share it here as well, since this forum seems to have a little more traffic.

A man gets to enjoy 80 summers if he's lucky, so go see what I did to ensure enjoyment of one of mine.

See what a spacekdet does on his summer vacation.

Grab the free textures at the end of the gallery if they appeal to you.
Hit the somewhat hidden links to the largest, un-watermarked size.

Thanks for watching!

A grab-bag of a gallery, haven't done much shooting since I came back from up north.
The summer that barely was is now officially over.

Some night time shots this time.
Out on the dock, about 2 am, windy as hell, moon playing peekaboo as the clouds race by.
Followed by experiments in post-processing... for some reason things looked good on the camera LCD preview but once inside PS...eh, not so much.

Some pushed, some pulled, and a couple that come pretty close to what it actually looked like.

Feel free to snag anything that you might use for an IBL or sky map.
(hit zoom for largest size.)

Been busy here getting the ranch ready for a long Michigan winter.
One of the chores is bringing in the boats, dock and swimming raft.
We let the season run a little longer than usual hoping for a length of warrn fall weather... it never happened.
Yesterday it flirted with 60 F (15.5 C) so we figured that was as good as it was going to get.
Here's a fun character I found happily swimming in the rainwater that collected in the sailboat. More info at Google.
There's nothing to show scale, but trust me when I say he was at least finger-length.
PS: the water was cold. There was shrinkage.
The only thing big in that lake was the bug and some fish.

Was it originally a delivery truck or has it been modified?

I can tell the "project" is the car, look at all those leaves...

Yes it was a fairly rare (only 1500 produced) model.
Not sure what it's history of use was (1936 was a long time ago) but now it's once again looking and driving nice.
Finally got caught up to the leaves...with maple trees you sometimes have to just let them do their thing for a while. About the only thing still holding leaves are the weeping willows, which are golden yellow. First to sprout, last to fall.

Now that winter is coming I like to plan next year's backpacking trips and recall previous ones.
Here is a great trip report and photos from a couple who visited one of my favorite places.
It's the kind of place that when I first visited I knew it would haunt me for the rest of my life...calling me back again and again. Sometimes you just have to live vicariously until circumstances allow you to actually return.

Your homepage and the sceneries of your place are great. I have got very inspired of your great web site with very nice pictures. I have to redo mine not copying yours but redo it.

My son are chatting with a boy in Michigan and have a wish to go to there. We have serious thinking of sending him for an student exchange to US and he want's to go to the northern parts. The landscape has resemblance with how it looks here in Sweden. What I know there were lots of swedish immigrants who went to Michigan and I can understand them.

Thank you, Tommy, I'm pleased that you like my 'stuff'.

The northern parts of Michigan- or anywhere along the shore of the Lakes- are indeed the more scenic parts. Once you stand on the shore of a freshwater lake that is so big you can't see the other side you'll understand why they are called Great Lakes. If your son is brave enough to visit Michigan in the winter then nothing will scare him! Naturally, it's usually better to visit during the summer, but as an exchange student I guess you have to be here while school is in session.

The Midwest did attract a lot of Scandanavian immigrants - the Upper Peninsula Finns especially are still going strong up there...Sisu!

Closer to home, here is a smorgasbord of photos from around the 'Space Place'.

I'm impressed that the swedish traditions are exercised in the US.

Thank you a lot for your links. It will be a great help to us. I shall contact the people who are in charge of the swedish organisations and see if they can help us with a student exchange.

The pictures you linked to resembles a lot to the nature in Sweden.
I had have the same scenery out of hte windows of the train to my work last year, 65km away.

Hey spacekdet
Just wanted to say thanx for the pics.
Here outside NYC, just had one real snow so far. Been having a hope for the last, oh maybe at least 10 years; to have enough snow to build an igloo. Just one of those things I want to do before I die; want to build/sit in a igloo I (and my boy) have built... with a campfire around somewhere. Still waiting
Maybe I should take a drive up your way huh? :)

I should have stuck my foot in the frame for scale.
I'm guessing 6 to 10 inches of ice, from the look of the cracks.
Parts of the lake were mirror smooth due to last week's warm up- the meltwater refroze beautifully when the temps dropped again.
It froze hard followed by big winds which pushed most of the snow away.
Other areas where snowmobiles had driven through the slush were very rough.
Naturally, it snowed the day after I took these pix so all that smooth clear ice is once again covered in white.
Still skate-able, but slower and not nearly as photogenic.
Wish I'd gotten the skates sharpened earlier- it's rare to have that much clear, snow-free ice.

More big wind overnight as the storm that walloped Steinie and Washington DC just skirted us.
Blew some of the ice clear of snow.
While they dug out or shivered with the power off, I laced up the ice skates again.

Ok, this ice skating thing is getting addicting.
Made the rounds (and around and around) on the smoothest section I could find.
Snow drifts make for nice obstacles that formed a figure 8 track.
Took an occasional break and tried not to pant hard enough to shake the camera.
Refraction, transparencies, reflections, textures, bump mapping, lighting, depth of field...everything can be 3D fodder if you just look at it funny.

Not really... it hit 57 F / 13.8 C. on the day of the hike.
Didn't really need the coat, it ended up stuffed in the backpack.

Today's high? 67 F ! / 19.4 C ... for the last day of winter, that aint bad!
Naturally, tomorrow being the first day of Spring ...yep, they're forecasting snow.
Aint out of the woods yet, but the end is in sight.

Finished about 80% of the spring yardwork / cleanup so no time for pictures.

All right. The photoblog is back in business.
(which means I finally remembered my ftp setup/password)

Going to have to work backwards to catch up to where I left off in September, but here is the latest batch of Mix Pix.

Do you trout fish behind your cabin in the Manistee?

Is that a plaster guard dog head I see in one of the pictures. (the one with your mom on the porch)
p.s. your Mom sticking her tongue out at you speaks volumes
about the photographer...

Great pictures! Great place!!

I'm not at liberty to confirm nor deny the existence of trout that may or may not be available by fishing in aforementioned river.

However, I can tell you that the water is cold, clean, and runs consistently over gravelly bottoms and beneath shady pines.

No plaster guard dog, I think that's a bag of peanuts sitting on the picnic table bench that dad was doling out to the squirrels.

Thanks for virtually visiting.

I like the ones with trees and fog on the water. Some look the same but aren't. They have slightly different moods.

At 3:49 in the movie the location is called the "Knife Edge" in Pennsylvania. You walk with a foot on both
sides of the mountain. Scary with a full backpack on.
I know some of the trail goes along or through private property...I love the cow!!!

How about a little fun with Bing Maps?

Sometimes you find maps within maps.

First example is in Sarnia Ontario Centennial Park.

If your geography is a little rusty, it's a map/model of the Great Lakes.
(Fun Fact: Now try zooming out with your mouse wheel until you see the larger picture!)

Now let's fly downriver to downtown Detroit, where the map within a map gets a wider focus.

Do you have any more examples from your area?

Crappy time of year when it's not Winter but not Spring either.
Managed to shirk my duties long enough to take a little hike.
Also managed to bring a full memory card for the camera and so only took a few new pics after deleting some old ones.

Sneaked out for a hike.
Lots of rain has the swamps and ponds full of water; the frogs seemed happy about it.
Heavy winds have taken their toll on many large trees. Paced off one fallen beech that was an easy 100 feet long... used to be tall.
Life is returning, it's good to see green stuff and things blooming.

I like the range of colors of the pictures. Red and the other colors of green and grey. I have never had thought of matching the colors of the garden with the car. Or is it othervise?????
