So happy to see you get back to work in the digital world! And I'm also happy you took on the sebbattical, looks like it worked out really well. Your artwork is as detailed as ever, super amazing. I've always admired your skill and attention to detail meanwhile not getting lost in the over-all shape and silluette of your designs. It's a really good and needed balance concerning sci-fi design these days. Great work.

Thank you Draise! It has been really fun to work on this project. I guess it did help to take a break from everything and everything still isn't back to the way they used to be, which is probably a good thing.

Just to say though, as constructive criticism (to offset all the praise and keep you growing) - the lighting does need some improvement, like either more bounce light or rim light.

Thank you Finis and Dragneye! Happy to be back. :D

@Steinie Thanks! I wouldn't quite go that far but I've surely been improving.

@Draise The lighting, in-game anyway, is quite limited for now. I'm working with an as of yet unfinished add-on for Gamemaker where I am the only one that has permission to use it by its creator and I'm not sure how actively the creator of said plugin is working on it. The lighting is all realtime though and there is almost no performance hit for adding more lights so my solution for making the lights look less like spots is going to be either; just simply adding more of them with less intensity or making an overlay sprite (similar to the flashlight) that lights up an entire area (not sure yet if this is going to be more or less of a performance hit though).
It sure beats having no lights at all though, all the shading used to be static and not even taking into account the direction of a light source (like the sun).

The Echron Cruiser. This ship interior took freakin ages. Glad it's finished now, it's the largest ship so far (with an interior).

Image

Image

Recent updates on the Hyperventila front include not only this but more importantly the ability to dock any ship to ...anything really.
At first I had to program a script that allowed me to, let's say, mix and match "rooms" (levels, maps, whatever you wanna call it) in Gamemaker to dock ships to stations. Unlike Unity on Unreal, Gamemaker Studio doesn't actually support pre-fabs or saving groups of objects so I had to get a little creative. The obvious solution here was to still be able to make ships in the room editor (GM's level editor basically) and then somehow get that room mixed in with the actual room I wanted to load (a space station for example, or planet level).

I did end up successfully using this script for a while but I actually ended up writing a new script that instead of loading the room into another room (which caused lots of duplicated instance-IDs and other problems) I wrote a script instead that allowed me to simply press CTRL-C in game and copy every instance in the current room into the clipboard (properly formatted in Gamemaker language an all) to paste into a separate script later which the game would use instead to load all the assets for a ship. This is not only more reliable but also saves me a lot of head-scratching every time it didn't load all the objects from the ship using the old method.

So now having the ability to load fully mapped out ships into rooms by just calling this simple script, these ships essentially being a small level in-of-themselves, the possibilities are endless.

So far the biggest setback is still the time it takes to make these assets that, while looking great in-game, do require me to model a lot of detail which no matter how fast I model still takes, sometimes up to a week in modelling time.

I tend to keep my interest in the project peaked by varying my workload and occasionally making fun things like this, a space moth:

Hyperventila DUATRON "Looper" Bike

Thanks Draise! Yeah that's more or less what I was going for :)

Made another silly vehicle during the weekend, just for fun. The Looper bike. A sort of mono-cycle with two wheels.

Turned out to be a bit of a pain in the end, getting the wheel animations into the game. Spent hours just editing the frames...

Another good one! I like the rough, corroded, eroded areas. It is like the first Star Wars where stuff looked used and dirty. Your designs have practical features good for the purpose of the ship or equipment too. Does each faction have a style or look for its ships, stations, colonies, etc.? If a player sees a ship can he determine from its design "that's probably a Cespian ship"?

Thanks Finis! Yes, the Cespian ships are inspired by dragonflies, butterflies and flying fish. (more or less anyway) Whereas the Lander/Coalition ships are more rugged, inspired by containers, cars and trucks. The Echron ships (like the Cruiser above) will be more sleek and aerodynamic, looking like birds and aeroplanes.
The pirate ships while be more of a mash-up of all of those.

I haven't come up with any designs for the Praat species, they should also get their own ship designs at some point.

Another thing that should help with ship identification are the faction logos which I haven't gotten round to designing yet.

All while still keeping that classic sci-fi look of course :)

Hyperventila - Mark I Escape Pod

Post by MikomDude »

The standard Mark I escape pod. This will reliably get you to the nearest shipyard, eventually...

It has been a while since I made this little thing, originally just a collectible object that would spawn randomly in the game, it became the first object that worked with the lighting engine and is now a playable ship, so I figured it deserved a render.

A strange addition to Hyperventila, a relic really. This is the Huntress crossbow. A weapon used by one of the time traveling mages in the game.

This is a bit of a speed model as I didn't really know how it would end up looking in the game anyway. It actually is quite fun to use in-game.

Hyperventila Space Rat

Post by MikomDude »

Currently working on some mini-games for the upcoming multiplayer mode in Hyperventila.

One game requires a rat trap... and a rat. In space. Here's my progress so far:

I tend to take a human basemesh and model some low-poly clothes around it in trueSpace. Then I import them into Blender and set up the materials, do the weight painting for rigging etc. and pose & render.

That would be cool. Not sure if my models are quite detailed enough for films though.

Hyperventila Ships & Stations & More

Post by MikomDude »

Updated the renders for the Duatron Looper bike. It's an older model and design but it's one of my favourite vehicles in the game so I decided to give it a new render.

Here are also some other ships from the game I designed since my last update to this thread, in no particular order.

Oh and I decided to make a little animation with the Hover Patrol Car.

How about an animation with the Looper bike?

You could design a submarine vessel.

Thanks! yes, animation in bForArtists with assets from the game (all made in tS of course). :)
Finis wrote: 28 Aug 2021, 00:19 How about an animation with the Looper bike?
It's kind of animated already to achieve the motion blur, I was thinking of rendering the whole animation but even just one frame took a lot longer than expected so that's a project that'll have to wait until I have a bit more time.
Finis wrote: 28 Aug 2021, 00:19 You could design a submarine vessel.
I'd love to actually. It's on my list for future project for sure.
