A haiku!? I had to google it to get an idea what is was...

Traditional haiku consist of 17 on (also known as morae), in three phrases of 5, 7 and 5 on respectively. Any one of the three phrases may end with the kireji.Although haiku are often stated to have 17 syllables, this is inaccurate as syllables and on are not the same.

How do we model a Japanese poem? Or is it more about the 17 polygons? Man, 3D origami would work well in this!!!

It is about the 17 polygons. Exactly 17. No more. No less.

If you want to really try to model by haiku then somehow include a reference to a season. I guess it would be more haiku-ish if I had required three objects with 5 polygons, 7 polygons, and 5 polygons ... but it is one object for this challenge.

Origami with only 17 polygons! Double the Japanese art!

WOW, this is an interesting one. i'll see what i can come up with. is it 17 quads or tris? does it matter?

That certainly qualifies James. Great use of the polys too.

Seppgirty, use polygons of any shape. Hmm, some interesting things could be modeled by using complex poly shapes instead of many polys.

Steinie, you're fast! Penguin? Cold? That's sort of a seasonal reference.

Think of it as a very low poly modeling challenge with a specific number of polys required. "Haiku" just inspired the number of polys. But if you can include haiku themes or other Japanese art themes then great!

Hexagon and Carrara 8 Pro beta

Since there were no rules on exactly how many points and sides a polygon consists of, I took liberties. Of course the object is welded, so it is one object of 17 polygons floating free in the ethereal existence of the mind.

This of course is Zen_Steinie in his lotus meditation mode.

My contribution. The tree has 7 poloygons, the leaves also has 7 (forgot to delete two leaves for the 5). The terrain and lake is all just 5 poly's. Thus the Haiku poem of an autumn. There also is a background picture placed in a post like fashion. Rendered using my AO+IBL and AO light rig mixed together. You can download those for free.
I have yet to boolean everything again, but it is all practically made from the same thing, a plane.

It's an autumn scene.

EDIT: fixed the polycount by deleting leaves, booleans, everything is good now.

Look at all this participation! I expected little participation but Steinie and James have already done two and everyone is being creative with the theme. Saul even wrote a haiku.

Rules changed so the 17 polygons don't have to be one object. There's a lot of creativity happening with multi-objects that shouldn't be stifled.

Steinie, are you sure that is not an F-117 stealth fighter?

I must say, you guys got quite creative with this. When I first saw it I just couldn't get my head around using only 7 polygons. Ya see traditionally we all know a 'polygon' as only a 4-sided shape. Allowing extra verts in between seemed like cheating to me so I never considered that as an option. Just couldn't do it; couldn't be anti-traditional/think out of the box for this one time. Which was Awesome! I got stumped! What a great feeling.
Poly - Gon is a Greek root word. The literal translation is... Poly = many... and Gon is short for gonies = corners, so the rule is logical/legal; I just couldn't get away from traditional 4-sided shape.
No negativity intended, just a personal rant.

I was going originally going to limit polygon sides but that would be hard and n-gons allowed more creativity with the theme. Still, many of these entries are tris and quads or simple poly shapes.
