A space ship project I'm working on
A space ship project I'm working on
This was modeled after a random doodle so it's a bit weird.
I used Wings3d for modeling as an experiment.
This model renders in real time in the Workspace with no SuperSampling.
This is only half of the whole ship, so I've got lots more to do.
Some more color variation in the grey areas is planned.
I'd like to do a "Beauty" animation with a cool background and lighting.
Like a Sci-Fi illustration.
trueSpace is exciting to work with. The real-time rendering is awesome and inspiring.

A rely nice start...
The modeling is very good.. very clean..

Re: A space ship project I'm working on
Thanks for the kind words everyone
theuns:
All of the detail you see is modeling so it's been taking a long time. For up close there's a normal map of random plating - but just a hint.
I'm using the Ambient Occlusion tool in Wings to bake a dirt map into the textures.
Parva's shaders are a great asset btw.
bitkar:
Thanks for the tip. I need others to look at it to see what I miss.
I will probably freeze off the mirror modeler and tweak asymmetry into the panels.
Also the hinge line down the center can be dealt with.

Re: A space ship project I'm working on
Awesome work, Peter! I also prefer modeling all details but time is usually against me and I tend to quickly get impatient and bored so I use a lot of textured details and bumpmaps
Can we see some close up shots to appreciate the amount of detail that has gone into it? Like the cockpit, engines and other high detail areas?
Keep up the great work!

Looks great, Peter! I love the detail since I'm a great fan of the fine geometry design

Re: A space ship project I'm working on
Thanks theuns.
here's a screenshot from Wings3d.
Here you see the ambient occlusion shading applied to the vertex colors which is later baked to a texture.
Note the greebling only goes so far in detail. The greater detail is produced with a normal map that's more-or-less random plating. This is the model without the normal map.
I'm trying to keep the polygon count low so I can manipulate the model in the workspace fully rendered. I'm gonna need a better graphics card.
I'll upload more pics after I do some more modeling.

Re: A space ship project I'm working on
Terrific work Peter. I love both the model and the colouring scheme you've got going on. Nice to see a spaceship with a more organic look about it.
If your after crits, the only thing I'm not to keen on are all the supports around the "windows". It kinda gives it a very angular look which to me, is out of synch with the rest of the design.
Not only that, but you'd of thought if the ship's builders have advanced their technology enough to build spacecraft, then a reinforced, wrap-around viewport would not be beyond there means.

Re: A space ship project I'm working on
Thanks for the compliments Breech Block,
I could easily give the cockpit idea a try too.
I'll give a report back after some modeling sessions.

Look at my funny little sketch that got me going.
I actually have the whole thing roughed out in Wings.

Re: A space ship project I'm working on
I have to disagree with Breech Block. I think the supports seems natural on this ship. Maybee some rounded cornes like the windows of an airplane. Sharp corners becomes leads to a crack in the construction. See the rounded corners at the spaceshuttle windows.
The future has in someway been connected to present time. Your ship seems to me to be a development of the spaceshuttle.

Re: A space ship project I'm working on
Very nice Peter... for the windows, did you just bevel the face and added the round corners manually with add edges?

I think the windows with the rounded corners looks more nice and more natural to a spaceship! Good work in all.

Re: A space ship project I'm working on
Start (in Wings3D) I connected the edges with some verticals I cut those verticals with a loop (red)theuns wrote:Very nice Peter... for the windows, did you just bevel the face and added the round corners manually with add edges?
then pulled the corners in with scale_radial command. I'll delete the extra verticals later.
Hope this helps.
BTW. I've done lots of modeling in TS but Wings3D is a tad more responsive with my old graphics card so I tend to use it.

Here are updates for you to enjoy.
Everything in the picture is a 3D object rendering in real-time. Below is a view of the rear. Next: refinements, then articulating the moving parts like landing gear.
Thanks for looking.

Fantastic work Peter!
One thing doesn't look right and that is the rear shot
looking inside the engines. They look like curtains.
A lot of women on board?...
I've watched this develop and it keeps getting better.
Thanks for sharing with us.

Re: A space ship project I'm working on
Thanks Steinie.
Right about those engines. I'm pleased that you thought they WERE engines
Sometimes I wonder what my work looks like to people. Anyway That's on the list to fix, along with the winglets which are just sticking through geometry. This is the first result of the task of converting all the 60 or so default material nodes -after importing- to the "Custom" shader from the free shader pack (thanks Parva).
This thing takes so much dang time, but It's fun so I'm motivated.
Oh, and there are women on board, I just have to model them. I'm building a cockpit section now.
Since I have transparent windows I want people to see something inside.

Re: A space ship project I'm working on
looks great Peter, personally, I'd like some curving wings or stubs to make it look meaner and menacing but that is just a personal taste thing... do you plan to have modular attachements (I LOVE MODULAR DESIGNS!!!
)
btw. is Wings3d easy to use?

Re: A space ship project I'm working on
bitkar, theuns,
thanks for the complements.
theuns,
This ship is just half of the model. The rest behind what you see will hopefully be more menacing. The existing model has two parts that separate. The front is C&C and can go atmospheric and land. So it's more streamlined.
Behind it is the 'service module' it stays in orbit with guns to protect the C&C. It acts as a communications node between the surface and whatever's left in space.
Behind that will be Cargo and Warp modules with bigger guns? I've not started modeling it yet.
Presumably this would stay behind outside of orbit. Look at my pencil drawing in an earlier post.
The service module has 'petals' that open when C&C wants to separate. I'm using morph targets for this & turret rotations, landing gear deployment, winglet deployment, etc. I think I could do laser flashes with morph targets too.
- yes it's pretty modular -
Wings is a good tool. Not any more complicated than Mesh Editor mode in the TS workspace.
I use Wings because Mesh Editor mode in TS is slooow for my computer.
It's also easier than TS to apply UV textures with Wings' 'snapshot' mode - outstanding feature. Check it out. Lastly. Wings lets you move (rotate) selected geometry in a direction specified by clicking on a face or edge. This Wings feature is a game-winner for me.

Kewl! can't wait to see the rest of the design then (missed that bit in the sketch)...
I down loaded wings and will have a look at it, sound pretty good from what you've said. did you have to get some tutorials to figure some things out or could you get it working by yourself of with info from the manual?
ps. what is morph targets and how can you use it for laser flashes?

Actually its just 'Morph'

EDIT: morphs don't work the way I hoped for this. Ignore my previous comments on this.
