9 - 3 / 1/3 + 1
Precedence of operators matters. I don't remember the rules. Multiplication and division are before addition and subtraction. What is precedence of addition and subtraction or is it left to right?
9 - (3 / 1/3) + 1 = 9 - 9 + 1
Addition has precedence: 9 - (9 + 1) = 9 - 10 = -1
Subtraction has precedence: (9 - 9) + 1 = 0 + 1 = 1
Addition and subtraction is left to right: (9 - 9) + 1 = 1
Without looking up the precedence rules it is either 1 or -1. I think addition has precedence so my answer is 1.

Hmm, not enough coffee ... "I think addition has precedence so my answer is 1". I was wrong twice. First, the correct precedence for +/- is left to right. Second, if it was addition first the answer would be -1 not 1 like I picked.
Anyway, I have no ideas for a what is it so someone else start one.

Re: Steinie's U3DA Game "What is it?"
In general most everyone knows that when going 60 mph you are traveling 1 mile per minute.
The simple explanation is that to avg 60 miles per hour is that to travel the total 2 miles (1 mile up the hill and 1 mile down the other side), should take a total of 2 minutes for the trip.
Since first half of trip was at 30mph that means in the first mile up the hill the total time of the 2 minutes was used up so no matter how fast you go in the second mile you will never average 60, even at infinite speed.
I tried to show this by calculations using math but I gave up. It's over my head but I'm sure some 5th grader can do it.
I think uncle Albert Einsteinie answer of EMC2 x 0 is pretty close.

I don't want to get too off track but this is what happened to me yesterday. I went to a Phillies Game which my daughter (supposedly) bought me a ticket for the game. Probably the cheap seats in the nose bleed section. She kept going up an escalator into glass door that said Hall of Fame Club where all my family and friends surprised me wearing my picture on their t-shirts. Great time.

Not Sure If I understand your question but that's 's typical for me. I couldn't figure out how to do this by using a math formula either.
After racking my brain I decided to give ChatGPT a look. Hers the response from ChatGPT and it only took seconds .
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Math Problem. If a car goes up a one-mile hill at 30 miles per hour how fast would it need to go down the other side, also a one-mile hill to average 60 miles per hour.
ChatGPT
To solve this problem, let's break it down step by step.
Going up the hill:
The car goes up a one-mile hill at 30 miles per hour. The time it takes to cover this distance is 1 mile / 30 mph = 1/30 hours.
Going down the hill:
Now, the car needs to go down the other side of the hill to average 60 miles per hour over the entire distance. Let's assume it takes time "t" hours to go down the hill.
Total distance:
The total distance covered is 2 miles (1 mile up + 1 mile down).
Average speed formula:
Average speed = Total distance / Total time
We want the average speed to be 60 mph. Therefore, we can set up the equation:
60 mph = 2 miles / (1/30 hours + t hours)
Solving for "t":
60 mph = 2 / (1/30 + t)
60 mph = 60 / (1 + 30t)
1 = 1 + 30t
30t = 0
t = 0 hours
This implies that the car would need to go down the other side of the hill instantaneously (in zero time) to achieve an average speed of 60 mph. This is because the time it took to go up the hill at 30 mph balanced out the time it would take to go down the hill at any speed greater than 0 mph.
In real-world scenarios, this isn't physically possible due to factors like friction, road conditions, and vehicle limitations. This problem demonstrates a mathematical concept rather than a practical solution.

WOW, Am I impressed. YOU BET

The bend of the hook is gentle for a wire to attach a cat toy. I can't tell if the small piece is metal or cloth, but judging from the shadow, it looks like a mesh. The hole seems too big to attach to the cooling of the CPU fan.
My answer is:
- A tool for picking up rings dropped down the bathroom sink drain.
- An auxiliary material attached to the wire mesh placed over the burner in junior high school science experiments.

Great answers to the What Is It which will end tomorrow.
@Borgcone : These jokes about measurement units have no connection to the average speed puzzle except that it was presented using miles. Europeans make jokes about the US using the British Imperial measurement system. I think another country uses it too. Bitkar made such a joke "what is miles?" So I made a joke by inventing a mythical Czech measurement of the "Bitkar". Americans are well versed in the metric system and use it in academic, scientific, and technical settings. Bitkar writes "Freedom units" in reference to Americans sometimes calling the BI system that.

WIRE
Everyone who said it is for pulling things in inaccessible spaces is right. Rings in the drain, car door mechanism, wires in holes. Specifically, this tool is for changing the fuel filter on a line trimmer (weed eater) or blower etc. Put the wire in the gas tank to grab the fuel intake hose and pull the filter out. I just use my finger but this tool has become very useful for many similar things.
MESH
trueBlue is exactly right. Spark arrestor screen. This metal mesh keeps sparks from leaving the muffler of some lawn tools. It is supposed to prevent fires. I just remove these because they frequently clog. Borgcone was on target with his burner idea. To clean one of these use a propane torch (a candle can do it too) to burn the goop from it.
Someone start a new what is it.
Borgcone: "I need to enlarge the characters on the screen more" ... Me too. Now days I sometimes can't read the smaller type but I'm reluctant to admit that and correct the problem.

It's Google's quantum computer for AI, if it's not an assimilator using Borg technology. Similar ones are often covered by the press. I don't know why, but some of them from other countries are hanging from the ceiling in the same way.

Re: Steinie's U3DA Game "What is it?"
Using image search seems pointless. Anyone can do that. There's no accomplishment, skill, intellect, intuition, reasoning, detective work, keen observation, enjoying everyone's guesses ... "cheating" only spoils all that for everyone.
My first impression was a chandelier. Then I decided that it is a machine and began looking for clues (in the photo) to its size.
I don't think there are rules. It is just for fun perhaps with an implied "honor system". Attributed to George Washington: "If men were angels we should need no laws at all."
I'm not saying image search was used here. Any of us may well have already seen images of this or similar.

Haha, I love this 'device' even though I have no idea what it is.
My first impression and only guess would be that it is some kind of AI generated belaying device for rock-climbing.

hahaha, no way. that was supposed to be a kind of obscure joke
I only do bouldering myself but I've been lead climbing once, although the devices we had were a bit more robust looking than this one.
This, it's an oddly satisfying shape and you can clearly see where the rope is supposed to go.

Steinie's U3DA Game "What is it?"
Ok, here's a device from my own personal collection.
Can anyone guess what it is?
(I really hope we don't have too many overlapping hobbies here on U3DA or this is gonna be very easy for some, haha)

Re: Steinie's U3DA Game "What is it?"
The point is not sharp. Probably a guide rather than for piercing. From the scratches and size of the threads I think it is not large. The short part has threads to accept another rod. Possibly several sections could be joined. I think several of these become the structure of a tent or it is a cleaning rod for the barrels of firearms.

Not quite, but I do still have a soft spot for LEGO sets as well.trueBlue wrote: 29 Feb 2024, 21:16 I am guessing, without cheating, it is some kind of LEGO tool/part
It is about the size of a regular ballpoint pen, maybe an inch shorter, and this is also the only component of the tool, it doesn't become a larger structure.Finis wrote: 29 Feb 2024, 23:03 ...From the scratches and size of the threads I think it is not large...

Not related to firearms either.

Re: Steinie's U3DA Game "What is it?"
At first glance, I thought it was a "monopod" for a small camera, but with this size, it seems like it must have a strap or hole for it. Or, a "pen for a graphics tablet" that can be stored inside the device, but the screw holes in the back for that is not necessary.MikomDude wrote: 01 Mar 2024, 12:22 ... size of a regular ballpoint pen, maybe an inch shorter ... tool ... doesn't become a larger structure.
The screw in the middle is a right-handed thread, and there seems to be nothing special about the rotation. There are many small irregular scratches on the surface, so there may be many opportunities for it to rub against something.
It might be screwed into a wall, base, or something to work, but seems too thin for "ring toss" ,"horseshoe pitching", or "bookends". If it is part for a "check (or memo) spindle", the reason for scratches cannot be explained. It should be hit by something harder, like metal, often, but I guess it's not a "key holder" because it has scratches not on a partial place but all over.
My answer is: A pin for displaying rocks, fossils, etc.

I'm afraid no one has gotten close yet so I'll provide a clue:
You do attach something into the end of the device, but this is not made of metal. The device is a helper for making the function it performs easier... however it isn't always required.

Re: Steinie's U3DA Game "What is it?"
I'll list out options and tell me which ones are closest...
1) A tool used in a hobby
2) Used around food
3) Used to measure something temp, ph, air flow etc
4) Used inside
5) Used outside
6) I only need one of these
7) Used in the medical field (sometimes a rectal exam...
)
8) You shoot it into the air (rocket, arrow, lawn darts etc)
9) A toy
10) A gizmo

Re: Steinie's U3DA Game "What is it?"
It's a tool used in a hobby, mostly indoors.
And it is not an attachment for any other tool.
It's not used for probing anything
like really, I promise!
To paraphrase Bitkar: you can use the screw threads to attach anything in there.
...But not necessarily a brush.

is it some kind of holder you stick to a flower pot or something and you screw in there some support for a plant or whatever is needed, LED strip :D Idk.
btw: you said its not made out of metal... is that important for its function? Can it be made of metal? I guess it must be plastic, but the threads look metal, so they are just inserts?

Re: Steinie's U3DA Game "What is it?"
ok, so let me think about it... the rod is made of metal... is it hard metal? can it bring something (screwed in that) thru someting else, maybe thru something hard? And do you screw somehting on it, use the rod to help it go somewhere, then you unscrew it, retrieve the rod and let the other thing in there do its job....? is that logic right?
or
its not for hard stuff and you can make nets or some things like that with it.

You're all super close but since this has been going for a few weeks now and you're all giving roughly the right answer anyway, let me reveal the device
The device is a paracord lacing needle (or fid) used when creating paracord bracelets and other crafty things out of paracord:
I'll let Finis create the next unknown topic as he was the closest with 'Macrame'.

Re: Steinie's U3DA Game "What is it?"
Yes it's a fun hobby. I used to make a ton of bracelets back in Sweden, I hobby I may take up again if I'm really bored in the future haha.Finis wrote: 18 Mar 2024, 17:28 You could makemany things with that cord. Crochet, macreme. One of my aunts did tadding. Handmade lace.
As for your device... Looks like some kind of springloaded camera contraption where a camera (like a go-pro) can be mounted on the platform with the screw, this platform being pushed inwards, then being released by pressing the rear part of the handle... but... why?
Edit:
On second thought it could also be a front grip for a shotgun/rifle that turns into a stand by folding the grip up and then splitting the two handle components outwards in a V shape.
Edit Edit:
I'm actually going with my first assumption in that it's a mount for a camera and say that it's actually a tri-pod, where the rear part of the grip splits in two as well, creating a tri-pod for the camera to rest on.
