SMC #56_Get Physical!
This Challenge is to create an object or objects that can be used in conjunction with your fav software's physics system.
The options are endless, from a table cloth, running water to bullets thru glass its your choice

1) Use any 3D software you choose.
2) Create the model(s) within a 3 hour time limit.
3) The scene can be an animation or static image
4) You may enter as many times as you wish.
5) Your entry will also include a wireframe screen grab before SDS (subdivision) has been applied. This is included to help others learn modeling techniques.
6) Include time spent, software/version and render engine used with your submission.
7) Post one render per entry at 800 x 600 pixels.
8) Render, Lighting, and Texturing are not included within the 3 hour time limit.

deadline is the 27/9/10

TBH I've had a really bad 6 months and most of the stuff I've done was more the "need" to do something constructive, the smc was just perfect for that.
I've been thinking about quitting U3DA, I rarely have anything constructive to say, and none of us seem to get much C&C on the images we post, Saul's comments on one of my images has about hammered the last nail home for me.

Nigec,
Don't let Saul's comments effect your participation here! Sometimes we
all get comments we don't expect. I am planning on joining the MMC soon and Prodigy
already said he would like to enter the SMC too. We are all going through ups and downs for
motivation so you are not alone. I've always enjoyed your postings Nigec and you would be missed
if you left us. I hope you decide to stick around and offer your support when possible.
(Remember some of the great Artist of the world died hungry and poor)

I think the problem with your topic for the SMC is that it would be better for a MMC instead.

I agree with Steinie, nige... don't let things get you down and quite your love for 3d... even if nobody comments, doesn't mean it isn't good.

It might be that people don't understand or never used the physics options in their software before and find it too daunting, but that is the point of SMC, to challenge you and try new things... so it is a good theme regardless of the lack of participation.

I will make an effort to enter this SMC from my side, always wanted to try out feathers and leaves floating down from a tree...

Reminds me of this old cartoon I have pinned to my office wall ;) ...

Nigec...I demand you not leave. I like the rest of the guys like having you around. As it stands it seems like there is only 10 of us that acutally post on here. You leave then we are down more people. I whish I had more time to do more of the challenges. I am so busy right now that, I don't have time to do as much art as I like. So... you are not allowed to leave. Resistence is futile. Besides you would miss us if you left. Where else can you get images from James and Steinie. Their images are one of a kind! There are alof of people we have lost since Caligari sold it's soul. Nez, Mrd3d just to name a few. I miss all those guys, in a artsy kinda way!

When things are bad is the worst time to neglect the things that are good. You have friends here. You enjoy 3D and this forum. You shouldn't leave.

Don't count trolls ramblings more than your friends' respect.

People are just busy now. Your SMC theme is great. Maybe emphasize more that it should be usable for physics (almost anything is) but doesn't have to be animated or have physics applied. How about extending it another month?

Thank you for the kind words guys, yes Nez and Mr3D are sadly missed and a lot of others.
A few years ago I would of bit at the comments, had a rant, and probably looked an arse, but, honestly there's a lot worse stuff to deal with in life.

Yeah we could let the contest go on longer, I wasn't complaining about no one entering, I didn't get chance either

you want to make changes, rerun it, etc.

Let me get a couple facts straight here. First Saul is not a troll but a gifted artist from many years ago at the Caligari forums. He does come across as a troll or a rear end of a horse sometimes. I won't excuse him for that. My belief is that he tires of the Poser babe shots as much as I do and instead uses 3D applications to create original Art.
However I did like the 007 look of the lady in glass.

The boyfriend from hell of the eldest is why we've had a bad 6 months, VERY messy split, he's currently sat in prison cell awaiting sentencing for arson with intent, breaching restraining orders and generally been a dick.
I only did 4 V4 models in Thea, two I made look old, the one in a globe and a dressed one, Daz stuff is really handy for high poly tests but a low poly model can just as useful to try and break a renderer.

That's a cool animation, I never really got the hang of the wind in the TS physics engine but it looks like you have :)

PS, when adding a YouTube movie to the forum you only need to enter the id-code of the video, for your video that would be "2Br3Qs0TiwI".

No Awakening is stand alone, you can use models from TS, my lttle game used Sketchup geometry, but TS models usually work better.
You can check out Awakening here:
http://www.awingsoft.com"
the physics system is no where near as advanced as Truespace and needs to be coded, .. well it probably is more advanced but I wouldn't know were to start coding something really complicated, dropping balls and waving flags is about my limit lol
My first try didn't have the ball drop thingy moving and it was very hit and miss to whether the ball went in the tube
You can load the game into Awakening and replace models, you need the geometry for the ball spawning point.
I'd use 3DS from Truespace, import the model as a Mobile, scale it so its the right size then convert it to a surface

or I could do a tut to how its done :)

Say, I never figured out how to use motion blur in 6.6 / 7.6 Model side.
How do you do that?

Also, you could compress the video file in .zip format if it will fit, and post that.
I'd love to see these videos! :D

To use motion blur, when you render to file, you just set it to On and set length and number of frames. For the image with the propellers, tS had to render and blend 100 frames. More frames, better blur and longer time to render.
For frame 10, for example, if you set the number of frames to 5, it probably renders and blends frames 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 (if you set blur length to x - unknown). It may render 6, 8, 10, 12 and 14 or 4, 7, 10, 13 and 16.

I honestly have never heard from anyone that they didn't like it. Even my mum (who I persuaded to watch) liked it and she hates science fiction. ;)

Good idea with the gears:

I think I was lucky with these, I got them to work with physycs. I tried to make better ones but they wouldn't turn.

I like yours better, they run much smoother than mine. With that said I think most of my issues is with the gear design. Did you do yours on WS or MS?

tS6.6...

There's a science for these gears. And I don't know it.

Well please let me in on it. I have a project I am doing to do with them, and I would not mind the advise.

I guess you read my post wrong. I said I don't know the science. Geometry, math... angle of the teeth and stuff.

Google has a lot of images of gears.

And this - http://assets.cambridge.org/97805218/15 ... 5178ws.pdf. :D

I recommend trying to model and animate these gears:

There's a cool program called eMachineShop that does gears, it does cad format exports like DXF, I usually export to Sketchup but in theory the should work in TS
Poly count is a bit scary though

Exporting to DXF and importing to tS does something that's not very useful, unless you want to use it for inspiration.

in sketchup you get a nice lines, I don't think SU8 has a DXF importer anymore..
if you export as igs then open in Carrara, but very limited to how much detail you can have and it needs welding

I started researching gear engineering for the sake of making gears.... here is a link to a pdf that explains an awful lot of the terminology and math.... http://www.bostongear.com/pdf/gearology ... apters.pdf

Another good reference is here ... http://school.mech.uwa.edu.au/~dwright/ ... e.html#top

You said it. Here's another one:

I wanted to add more but I got bored while waiting for the physics calculations.

I like. Curious Accu. Why don't you use TS 7.6?

maybe the same reason I don't? I don't use or need workspace, 6.6 is faster and just seems to "fit", I don't gain anything by using 7.6 just a lot more clutter

After the shakey start I'm really surprised how well this challenge is going, thanks everyone :worship: :worship:

Thanks for this challenge topic Nigec. Thinking of things I could do for it inspired an idea for a short animation. Too much time needed for it to be a SMC or for me to do at all now but I'll do it sometime as a regular project. It will use my Splododyne devices to blow stuff up.

I almost don't use tS at all these days. Switching to 7.6 would take time, I have to learn "new tricks". :D
I know tS6.6 well enough for what I do. tS7.6 seems too complicated.

If only I had some inspiration...

there are some tools in 7.6 that is not in 6.6, which is the main reason why I use 7.6 model side only, plus it seems a lot more stable than 6.6 was... (can't recall the list of new things in 7.6 though, will have to go search for that)

I might not be around for a few weeks, would someone be able to set the poll up if I don't get back by the end of the month?
Thanks
