With the price of 2 giga of ram, it is a good thing to do even if TS can't use more 2 giga (it seem, i am not sure). Now you can use really the 2 giga allowed because the OS and other soft use a big part of the first 2 giga.

game runs smooth.

GeForce 9600
I'm going to buy it, but I know that is incredible, principally because of the price!

i can recommend the 9600gt. I've had one for over a year and still have no problem with games (arkham Asylum worked fine on it). Get the 1gb version if you can, you should be able to find one for around £60-80. Works great with TS as well.

9800 is faster but it depend of your money. Remember when you have an older card it will be more difficult to have update of driver in the futur. The choose depend also of your screen. On a full hd you need a very good card. The best are ati 5870 and nvidia 280 but the price is hard. with the difference of price between 9600 and 9800, i prefer 9800. Most important on a card is the second number: first number is the name of serie, second number is the speed. ex: 8800 is faster than the 9400 and probably than 9600.
The best choose for me is to buy not the last model but the model immediatly under the best: you have a very good speed for a reasonable price and you can keep this card several years without problem to update driver.

Before to install a nvdia card you need to uninstall the ati driver (with your ati card installed). windows can boot with his standard vga driver in low resolution. Now change your card and install the nvidia driver.

Beebs mean an uncompatibility when the computer boot. It is possible a problem with the bios. also, be sure your card is in the good position on the mother board. There is a lot of reason to don't work. It depend of your config and maybe a problem with a bad card (that need to test it in another pc to confirm this point).

You'll have problems with TS... Anyway good luck. I advise you to pick a XP or Vista to install in your amazing new computer. Stunning configuration! :)

My PC is 5 years old now and I am thinking of an upgrade.
Here is a configuration idea for a PC to be used for 3D (trueSpace) and Video Edition (Sony Vegas) :

Processor : Intel Core i7 860
Motherboard : Asus P7H57D-V EVO
Memory : OCZ PC Gold Low Voltage 2 x 2 Go DDR3-1600
Graphics : Gigabyte GV-N250ZL-1GI (GeForce GTS 250)
Power : Corsair CMPSU-650TXEU
Hard Disks will come from my current config : a couple of 250 Gb Hard Disks in RAID 0 mode to host a Windows XP Pro 64 system and the programs, plus two more 1Tb Hard Disks for data.
Mouse : Logitech G500 Gaming Mouse

Any comments regarding that config ?
Do you think 4 Gb of DDR3 are good enough for the 5 years to come ?
Should I buy the graphic card today or keep using my "old" NVidia 8600 GTS until I go for an SLI solution ?
All remarks are welcome :)

I dont think 4 will be good for the next couple of years !
64 bit will be good for a dozen of rams pretty soon...
I would wait for another year and we will know what way the realtime render will go and what grafic card standards.....
thats whatr I would do...

I do my animations with an old e6600 with 2 giga ram and a 7950 gt nvidia on XP. It work very good. I do the render at night when i sleep or i can work on another pc ;)
i am not sure if a 64 bit OS work better with TS. It seem win 7 64 bits have more problem than win 7 32 bits. I am not sure if it is right. LE is not a problem for me, i don't use workspace and don't like to use the LE.
Maybe the solution is to try a win 7 32 bits with 4 giga ram. it is possible to upgrade to 64 bits (and more ram) later when all the problem are resolved (not only for TS but scan, printer, network, etc...). It is not possible to return to 32 bits if you have installed the 64 bit OS before. Both version of win 7 are on the same CD. all you need is to upgrade the license.
If i buy a new pc (core i7) i keep the old. In this way, i am sure i can continue to work without problem. Hardware is not a priority for me. Problem is what i avoid. Problem cost more money than to buy a pc when you use it for your job. It is why professionnal are not geek. ;)

I had lots of problems using tS on Vista 32 bit but no such problems running Windows 7 64 bit. It may not be related to the 'bits' version but I needed 64 bit to get the best of my 4gb of memory in my laptop (especially as it will take 8gb!)

i can't use TS on vista 32 with my laptop (problem of video driver without update possible). It is why i use XP on another old pc.

I would like to know what problem you find with TS and win 7 64 bits. I use only the model side. all problem with workspace have no interest for me. do you have a nvidia or amd ati? Thank for the infos.

Also, it would be interesting to know issues with win 7 and other soft (blender, sketchup, vue, ect...). maybe create a thread for that.

Emmanuel you might find you have a problem with Asus mobo and OCZ memory.

My last PC I bought ASUS mobo with OCZ memory... I tried every trick in the book but ended up swapping out the OCZ with Patriot.

I cannot say this is a problem with all OCZ memory with all ASUS mobos but there have been many issues with other homegrown PC configs with this combination.

Also I am running a pair of 8600 GTS in SLI right now and you will find that SLI can cause problems with certain game engines and on rare occasions 3d soft.

Yes, it is hard to find a memory that fits a mobo nowdays :)
After a long search, I think I will go with GIGABYTE this time and its GA-P55A-UD4 : more compatible with recent memories, offers USB 3.0 and SATA III, SLI and Crossfire.
Memory could be a couple of 2Gb G.SKILL DDR3-1600 / PC3-12800 certified on Gigabyte website.

@v3rd3, do you see a significant performance boost running the SLI mode in trueSpace Modeler side ? Since Modeler was still very CPU-dependent, I wonder if it is worth the SLI ...

@all, thanks for the comments :)
I installed Win7 32 professional on my laptop, and I am glad I only paid 20€ for that upgrade. It is better than Vista but I feel more at ease with XP pro 64.
XP Pro 64 let me run a tS render, and still work on Photoshop at the same time with no slow down : tS uses 2Gb and leave the rest for other apps :D

The SLI configuration does not help much with speed but it does seem to help with stability of the realtime images in the workspace environment. When SLI is disabled some of the larger textures I use give off odd effects when I rotate objects for some reason.

Modelside renders seem to have a small improvement.

I am not enough of a technician to understand all the benefits of my SLI config to TS other than having 1Gb of gpu memory insted of 512mb.

Thank you ; this confirms some informations I've heard regading tS6.6/Modeler and SLI modes.
As long as we don't need 2 or more monitors, a faster GPU is still better than 2 graphic cards.
