Re: 3D Artists Reporting Back
thanks.. I got well already. One more week with no sport and then back to normal, i hope. It was just annoying muscleache (big one) and a rised temperature and I was tired a bit, not much tho. Strange illness indeed.

No, on that day it was a 6,000-acre fire about 20 miles east where I live
Today it is 50,000-acre fire with 16% containment
So far forward progress towards our house has been stopped and holding at the dozer lines
However, on the opposite side of the fire, it is no looking good!

trueBlue is your house safe now?
Work is slowing down now. Nights are chilly so grass is growing slowly.
I went with a customer to cut firewood in the mountains. Nice to get into the higher mountains with forest.
I've been back to the coffee shop in the foothills. The view draws me there. Have to save money now so that will be an occasional thing.

Re: 3D Artists Reporting Back
Business paperwork backlog. Looking for a newer used truck. No luck so far and prices soared. It got some Winter work. Dug some post holes, moved some blocks. Two months with little exercise since lawn season and my arms were really sore for a few days.
The city politely offered to fine me if I don't clean up my yard .. with an impressive list of "violations". They say I must have a license plate for my 1971 Dodge Demon. That means registering it. $100 to $200 a year. It hasn't run in 20 years, is not on the street, and usually has a tarp over it.

that is remarkably clear ice. We usually get it more milky. Seems nice for skating. We dont have a winter where I would be brave enough to step on ice.

Government action is seldom about what is right, reasonable, or good for its people. I can probably cover it with a tarp or make a fence to hide it and they won't care. Otherwise I'll have to put it in storage or register it.bitkar wrote: 30 Jan 2023, 20:30 i dont understand why you should register and pay for a car that is on your property and not on the public roads. Couldn't find the ice picks but I was wearing my life jacket under my coat.
It might or might not save my life, but it'll definitely make it easier to fish out the body.
Reporting back: several days of above freezing temps and actual sunshine and now heavy rain have put the kibosh on any further skating action.
Lesson: It was nice while it lasted.

The Forest Service 'dozed the road to the hang glider launch. Now regular 4x4's can get up there. People flew yesterday. They are hoping to have a Memorial Day fly in. Uh, I mean unorganized unofficial non-event Fun Fly that doesn't encounter innumerable regulations.

The Memorial Day Fly In was fun but not big. I didn't get to drive. Friday no one was here. Saturday a couple of pilots arrived but didn't fly. They camped at the landing zone. Today a few more arrived and some flew. More plan to fly tomorrow but I have to return to work. With this launch inaccessible for 2 or 3 years I thought many would be here.

No truck this morning. Wanted to go out for coffee so I walked to a nearby Starbucks. I haven't been to Starbucks before. Employee was good. Cafe mocha, not impressed. Coffee at the shop in the foothills is better, and more expensive, plus there's the view. Best cafe mocha? WalMart home brew. Half milk, half water, store brand freeze dried coffee and chocolate milk powder.

Re: 3D Artists Reporting Back
I saw a procession of state police motorcycles and knew what that meant.
https://www.krqe.com/news/new-mexico/al ... ing-chase/
I remember the previous fallen officer. Driving I found myself behind a long line of cars at a usually quite intersection of a side street and a main road. A procession of many law enforcement vehicles was passing. Escorting the fallen officer's return to his home town. That procession began in Albuquerque two hundred miles north. Everyone got out of their cars and saluted or placed hands over their hearts as the officers passed. No one was disrespectful.

Re: 3D Artists Reporting Back
Working at a remodeling guy house when a toddler appears next to me. Out of nowhere. No one around, no cars, all quiet. Thinking he hasn't gone far and his parents will be looking for him I get him to follow me, he can walk great, and ask if nearby houses are his home. Baby talk but I can tell he means "no". A lady in a nearby yard takes care of him and calls the police while the guy there helps me ask around the neighborhood.
Police arrive, ask me about finding him, question everyone, go door to door searching for his parents. They tell me not to leave until they are done investigating. Baby is in good hands so I keep working. Later an ambulance arrives in non-emergency mode. I ask if the baby is ok. He is fine they just needed to be sure of that.
Soon a woman comes from a small apartment building across the street. She is apparently his mom or family. Police say I can go.
Cool little dude. Not crying for his mommy. He is in adventure and exploration mode.

Brother, you aint kidding.
I had to dig deep to pay for it.
The water smells ...weird and I'll likely have to plumb in a whole house filter to deal with it.
It's ok when I run it thru both a faucet filter and then a pitcher filter, but
I haven't been brave enough to drink it raw from the tap.
County is coming out Monday for obligatory testing and to verify the old well has been abandoned.

Re: 3D Artists Reporting Back
I take 1.5 gallons (5.7 liters) of water in my pack and two canteens. Sometimes 0.5 gallons is Gatorade ( its got 'lectrolytes ). When half is gone I go back. Usually I take a fairly direct path back to my truck and have 0.5 gallons left. So that's about 1 gallon (3.8 liters) during a hike. I have a gallon in the truck too. A typical inferno hike is 4 or 5 hours. Distance varies. The hottest day is usually in June when the air is very dry. No soaked clothes or sweat in my eyes since it evaporates immediately.bitkar wrote: 07 Jul 2023, 07:37 insane tempshow much water do you consume per distance/time?
Wait for the testing. It could be from new pipes/equipment, be safe, and fade over time. If the water is safe you will get used to smells and tastes and won't notice them any more. Newcomers here can taste the high mineral content of the tap water for a while. Not sure about smell though. That seems worse than a taste.spacekdet wrote: 25 Aug 2023, 17:36 The water smells ...weird and I'll likely have to plumb in a whole house filter to deal with it. ... Still must check Bitkar's adventures. I'd look at Spacekdet's hike/camping photos if he did any ... ah hmmm, ah hmm.
This weekend is the Columbus Day Fly In for hang gliders and paragliders. Looks like it might not be enough pilot's to need me to drive. The organizer thinks there will only be a few. Can't get much footage for my movies with only a few pilots. Not a festive event with just a few people. The organizer says hang gliding is fading out and people are flying paragliders and powered gliders now. Says this site is great for hang gliders but just OK for paragliders so fewer are interested in flying here.

Seeds acquired. I don't know if they are good condition or not. There were plenty of them in the pods. Collected on Oct. 8, 2023 during the Columbus Day Glider Fly In. They came from this yucca. It is in Dry Canyon at the start of the road to the launch site.Steinie wrote: 23 Aug 2023, 18:44 I have been waiting years!!!![]()

Re: 3D Artists Reporting Back
I have seen yucca growing in the soil here in Michigan and I think they left them there during the winter.
They should do just as well or even better in New Jersey.
I would still hedge your bets and plant them in a sunny warm microclimate type location, maybe against a south facing wall.

They should do just as well or even better in New Jersey.
I would still hedge your bets and plant them in a sunny warm microclimate type location, maybe against a south facing wall.

Re: 3D Artists Reporting Back
Too much work now. I'm ready for my Winter break.
Steinie I'll email you soon to arrange details. This variety is yucca elata. https://www.gardenia.net/plant/yucca-elata Once established yuccas are almost indestructible. Yucca don't care. It just don't care. I have read that it is difficult to start them from seed and seen extensive procedures for that. I noticed that there are none at higher altitude. I looked around the hang glider launch at 7000 ft but found none. Similar sotol plants thrive there. The record cold in town was -14F plus cold days around that one. That killed some palms but no effect on yuccas. Typically freezing means teens or twenties here. Native habitat dry, warm, sunny so best like Spacekdet said.
This variety has sharp edged leaves and points but no danger like Spanish bayonet variety. Noted as toxic to pets and horses. I've seldom seen any that were eaten (suspect deer or gemsbok did it) and have heard of no instances of pet trouble.
Spacekdet how is the water from the new well? Funny taste still there? Testing done?

I worked at the Baby Rescue location today. Police again. A patrol car, a K-9 unit, and a service aide car (semi-police helpers) arrived two houses away. Two officers went to the door. Later they had a female with her hands handcuffed behind her at the patrol car. They put her in the car and all left.

Neighbors wrapped around half of the block have joined the super lights display. This year it became an event with many visitors, home owners in costume greeting people, and the nearby radio station giving popcorn and cocoa.
https://vimeo.com/899121565
I tried my new TG-5 camera. Filmed in 4K video. Edited in Davinci Resolve and downscaled to 1440P for smaller upload file size and since most of it is blurry anyway. It took 3 hours to upload this 4GB to Vimeo.
Auto focus in movie mode didn't work well in these conditions so much is blurry but I think it captures the scale and festivity.
I'll quit Vimeo soon. Go to the free plan and stop uploading there. Probably start using Rumble.

My super interesting adventures
are the only ones worth reporting lately?
The electricity was out in a large area. Maybe the whole town so I went outside to see the stars.
Lit candles. Tried the new camera. Automatic setting.

Been away for a while. Had a burn-out. Now have a new job at Amazon
here in the Hague. Still nice to have a stable job instead of freelance.
Also broke up with my girlfriend of the last 5 years so found a new flat last year which I had to renovate for a while.
All settled in now and things are going well. Still work on some smaller projects now and then.

Mikom is here! Sorry about your trouble but good it's going well now. For me the freedom of self employment means there is no going back to a regular job. It is tempting though. I think the stability, security, and if any the simplicity of a regular job will be refreshing for you. Like a vacation.

Re: 3D Artists Reporting Back
The glider Fly In is not a big event this year. Day one had three para-gliders who flew once. One went long distance. Wind is too strong today. Some may fly tomorrow. Monday looks good but pilots usually don't stay that long. No hang gliders yet. They like the stronger wind.
My new camera is great so far except for filming gliders in the air. The old camera didn't continually refocus in movie mode. Auto focus, just like for a photo, to start then it stays that way during filming. Good for moving gliders. New camera continually auto focuses for movies. If the subject isn't in the focus box then tries to focus on the sky and gets blurry. That interrupts a good shot with blurriness and requires keeping the glider in the middle of the frame at all times. Manual focus is impossible to use outdoors and long distance. View screen is barely visible in sunlight, too small to see the focus.
There are some more modes like focus assist that I'll explore. Maybe there is a wide depth of field setting where nearly everything is in focus. Maybe landscape mode.
Fire fighting planes that are flying low today. (Forest fire in the mountains.) I might test different modes filming them.

The glider Fly In was not big this time. Four or five pilots. Too much wind Saturday. All para-gliders. No hang gliders. Para likes less wind, hang likes more so more flying when both types are here. Some will fly today, Monday, but I'm back to work. No movie for this one. Not many flights and I'm learning the new camera. I got some good footage after finding the good settings.
Med-evac helicopters (hospital nearby) and fire fighting airplanes (forest fire) flying low over the landing zone.
Long ago the landing/take off strip of my town's small airport was lengthened to accommodate the big fire fighting tanker planes. In the old days some of them were remodeled old bombers.

Re: 3D Artists Reporting Back
Air show was fun. At least half and hour in line at the gate to drive in. Then a bus to the flight area. Met my nephew there.
Good photos. I struggled with the new camera for video. Also it liked to over heat and shut off when continually in movie mode. Some video better than I thought.
Fewer planes less variety than last time. Many more vendors that previously. F-22's, B2 bomber fly over, B1 bomber, F-117, F-35's, A10's were missing. Two F-35's on the ground. The flying demo's were mostly historical planes and the Thunderbirds. The Thunderbirds are F-16's.
Probably the troubles in the world now mean that much of the aerial goodies are deployed or on stand by and not available for airshows.

you are right, that company is now very busy making inflatable M1A1s and HIMARS for Ukraine, even having a heat source for it to look real in infra spectrum. Its quite pricy tho... would be nice to have one on the garden, but its really expensive :D

Airshow video. Nothing fancy for editing. Just put photos and clips together.
Rumble's player likes to default to low res. Use the settings to select 1440p or 1080p. Sometimes the controls won't auto-hide in full screen mode. Press F twice, toggle full screen, might fix that.
Bitkar that aircraft list is of the planes that were not at this one. This one had many vendor booths with food and souvenirs and not many planes. I'll do something with the previous airshow sometime. It has those planes.

Forest fires in the mountains. One dead, 20,000 acres (about 8000 hectares) burned, many structures damaged.
It is on the outskirts of Ruidoso which was caught in a fire a couple of years ago. Thousands evacuated. Bonito lake is threatened. The lake belongs to my town and is one source of our water and burned about 10 years ago. After years of cleaning fire goop out of it and restoration it was to reopen for fishing in May. Some fire on the Apache reservation.

I think the fires are under control or out now. The last I knew rain helped though it also caused some flooding.

@Bitkar, good photo. Moon was still awesome last night. Has the flooding there stopped? Did the rain cause any trouble for you?
Four police cars including a K9 unit at the gas station down the street from me. Later two or three were across the street from there with officers entering the office area next to a questionable massage parlor.

The floods hit hard on the eastern part of Czech Republic (called Moravia), Bohemia part was mostly OK, some minor damage, but nothing serious. I live on a hill so I was not worried about myself. Now the water level is slowly getting lower as the weather is nice again - no heavy rain anymore and sun out.
The damage assesment and all the work is all ahead of the affected population.

.
I haven't been to the fair in many years. It was fun. Too many vendors, rodeo seating mostly reserved for ticket holders, still fun. I found a gate near the small non-paying rodeo bleachers to watch and film through. Turned out to be pretty good viewing.
Continous autofocus for movies sounds good but not in low light or much movement. I didn't remember how to focus lock. The settings I selected worked well though. This video has no color correction, bright/contrast, or other changes. Straight from the camera.

Re: 3D Artists Reporting Back
A para-glider pilot crashed about 100 feet below the launch on a steep slope. Fortunately a pilot who is a paramedic was present. The medevac helicopter landed at the glider launch. A crew of ground rescue, chopper medics, and a forest ranger brought him up. Bystanders manned a rope for the rescuers to move on the slope. The chopper took him to El Paso. Three hip fractures.

Going well. Last I heard he has pins in his hip, can walk carefully soon, and will heal well. No news abut the cause of the crash.bitkar wrote: 13 Oct 2024, 18:52 oh that's gonna hurt and take some time, but still ended up relatively well.

Re: 3D Artists Reporting Back
I think I finally sort of 'fixed' my tS install that I hosed installing one of the Beta versions (Beta 8?) over the top of it. It replaced my tS 7.61 exe with 'Rosetta.exe' which made me quite unhappy. I was warned but picked the wrong folder to install it anyway. Also some failed backup drives chimed in and added their chaos to the mix.
In any case I somehow caused my Libraries to re-appear first but then VRay would not render properly.
Reinstall and patch seemed to do nothing a couple times until mysteriously it worked.
Not going to question they whys and hows, but now maybe I can again stick my head inside the cool grey world of trueSpace and actually produce something. Don't hold your breath, I am very slow! (but happy)
Now if I could only recover my files off that shitty WD backup drive that insists it needs to be formatted despite working fine for a couple years.
I think it had all my tS installation and ProTeam archive on it which is why it took so long to try and recover from my Beta boo-boo. I thought I made a CD/DVD backup too but haven't found it yet.
Bought a new SSD for backup but apparently I haven't learned my lesson: I should have bought two because the formula '1 backup = 0 backup' remains undefeated.
Let this be a cautionary tale.

Re: 3D Artists Reporting Back
dont use SSDs for backup! if they are not powered up for something like two years (older even just one year) the data will get broken.
