I like that style for your bridge Seppgirty. It would make interesting shadows as you drive along.

I started making an angel ornament but the challenge calls for something about your area. I'll make a God's eye ornament like this is made by wrapping yarn around two sticks. I might make a luminaria too. They are paper bags with sand and a candle inside. Luminarias are placed outside along sidewalks, walls, and on roofs. Each Christmas the church in Tularosa, just north of here, puts out a lot of them like this.

We used to do the candle bags for our church too. To light the way for midnight mass.

Steinie: So that's why ornaments mysteriously fall off of trees.

I made a Christmas tree, a pine tree, since Dragneye mentioned putting the ornaments on one. It seemed appropriate to make one rather than use a prefab or generated. It is modeled mostly in TS since he noted honoring TS. However, The zip file for the .cob or the .obj version is larger than the forum allows for uploads. I'll put it somewhere else and post a link. Then someone else can put the challenge ornaments on it.

Looks a bit straggly. Last one for sale?
:)
Very nice Steinie. I had started a tree for that purpose (my surprise for you all). So since the cat is out of the bag... I can openly broach the subject.
As I planned the idea, I remember that many times (all?) in the past for me when I imported obj I would lose what textures came with it. So, is there a problem with the idea of putting the various objects on a tree? I thought a basic format like obj would be good since some here use different programs nowadays.
Maybe it would be best if someone with more experience actually puts it all together?

Let's use your tree Dragneye.

Mine is thin but the branches can be copied to fill it in. 134K polys already. I'll put it up later in my free stuff thread.

The contestants using TS can provide cob files, and textures. Does anyone know how to get the textures into TS with an obj?

Ha... Will see if mine looks any better. Gonna use a tut I found but it uses instances and so isn't a clean simple mesh. Will see what happens. I'll be using Blender.

Very Cool entry Jamesmc.

Need more balls folks... (or whatever shape your ornament shape comes in). :)

Basically simple rule; make something to offer to the trueSpace tree. Could be tinsle, gift boxes, even the tree itself as I am running short on time, but would look great if we had ornaments. The more the merrier.

Mikom... sure, why not.

Yes there will be a vote. From all the entries posted in the Challenge Thread.
Dating this event, I wanted all to participate without bothering anyone's schedule since it is a hectic month by its nature.

edit: Great to see the variety. Keep em comin'!

PLEASE: share the obj.

Just d/led what's there already. Headin out to see if I have any issues putting them all together in Blender.
Anybody have the tS logo as a picture to share?

My Object will not work with Blender. I played with that piece of garbage (Blender) for an hour. What were they thinking
when they designed it?. To make mine work I would have to re-build the parts in Blender and by doing that my object would
turn into a Blender zombie. I do not want my Elf to become a Blender zombie....

Dragneye: See PM about how to download the tree. There are no textures with it. You only need two: bark and needles (I used green carpet). The .cob version has separate parts if you need them.

You could include Steinie's ornament on the tree, if the export/import isn't solved, by placing his contest entry image on a sort of flat ornament you make in Blender. You've seen those, round or square with a Christmas scene printed on them. If Steinie approves of course.

Feel free to apply materials to my ornament as suits you and works in Blender.

Steinie: There is no way to export it as a .obj or other file type? Try Mesh Collapse or something like that first. You probably sculpted him in Sculptris or such right? Can it be exported from there in a Blender friendly format? Maybe this will help http://www.zbrushcentral.com/showthread ... to-Blender.

Blender zombie elf... another Steinie original.
Sorry to hear Steinie. Blender does have a learning curve. It smooths out though after the initial grind of orientation. It really would be great to have yours on the tree too.
Yeah, it wouldn't be fair for you to have to redo it just to put in the pic. You did what was required for the challenge so...
Actually, Blender can import a bunch of other formats though I have never tried that. Would you be willing to pic a more prevalent format and share that and whatever happens happens? Either way... it's all good guy.

I made an ornament for the tree too. I can't enter it but wanted to share in the joy.

Will close the challenge in a few hours to cover the time zones.

It's now or wait till next year. More is prettier... :)

PS:I apologize. Just noticed I put my earlier post in the challenge entry thread instead of here. I don't know how to move it. Sepp... if you could take a quick gander and reply here to me abt your entry that would be great.

Polls show the wrong date when you are not logged in. Log in and check the poll end date. That's what counts. Hint: when doing a poll use the preview to see the end date and adjust the days accordingly.

If you edit a poll it will reset the votes to zero. People have changed challenge polls for late entries or errors.

The poll, as it is now, ends on the 29th. The end date you see when you are not logged in is not the real one.

Vote!

Voting thread: vi ... =66&t=5007

@Dragneye: You're welcome. Steinie's tree sculpture is cool too. That could become a U3DA tradition: each year we add new ornaments to the collection and put them all on a new tree. So the poll, fortunately, doesn't need editing. When they do I think you have to edit the first post to access the poll but not sure of that. The only control for the end date is the duration in days.

HOLD ON!

I held my vote for last for just such an event. Unfortunately, I didn't realize that its timed on its own so... I can't vote? Thought I'd do it then close it.
(Can anyone check to see if it is as I say? That was my intention anyway. Lately, my memory is shot)

So... before I checked anything, I went to the entries and made my hard thought choice. Now being a tie, how abt I just tell ya who I voted for.
Steinie.

So Steinie Does win any way y'all look at it, since I was closing the poll after my vote.

Does this all sound fair? Dissension is ok.
Speak your mind now.
I'm putting the tree together and I need to know who won!

You are Challenge Super Being so you can do whatever you want to. Withholding your vote to use as a tie breaker is a good strategy.

Yeah, I really liked Finis entry. How the heck you do the string guy?! Very cool.
Steinie's was so out there, I just had to give him his due. You are unique dude.
I have to admit I cheated in the final pic. I couldn't get Steinie's obj to open and I had no obj for James.
Hey Sep; you in the neighborhood too huh? Cool.
Hope I represented them all well.

Making the Ojo de Dios. I used Hexagon for modeling. The sticks are rounded cylinders. For the string I used a line (curve) tool, thickness tool, and full dynamic geometry history to make reusable "wraps" (Fig B). By using full dynamic geometry I could change the shape of a wrap by moving points on the original control curve (Fig A, yellow is control curve) while seeing the solid view. This let me bend and fit them to the sticks. It is ok that the wraps self intersect since fuzzy yarn would look like that.

Then I made diamond shaped sections (Fig C). I placed copies of the wraps (green) along the sticks, welded them into one object, and bridged (blue) them together. For a real Ojo de Dios each color or section of yarn would be one string spiraling instead of diamonds.

The weld and bridge tools in Hexagon are great for making holes (select two faces, click bridge, makes a hole) and connecting objects (weld, select faces, bridge).

There is a program called Gordian Knot (here) that lets you wind a cord around things. That could be useful for this kind of modeling.

Aaaah... Very nice.

I can find the same tools in Blender, so I guess you could also do it there.. But great! Splines and bridging.
