Hello Dennis,

Yeah TS 7.6 it's totality different to 6.6 anyway the model side is the legacy of 6.6 in 7.6 so you can use it...
Steinie have some useful links here: vi ... p?f=13&t=3"
Design Devil have some cool plugins in his site: http://www.designdevil.de/" (Navigate through the menu)
As you know the site gonna be shutdown so if you want do you need to download all tutorials that is free now the faster you can!!! http://www.caligari.com/products/trueSp ... undamental"
Download the max you can, remember, more the better. It may can be shutdown any moment so download first the ones that you think that would be more useful...
You can also find some freeware renderer to add to you TS like YafaRaytS, Kerkythea, Dribbler, etc...

Greetings from Brazil

PS: When I came to this forum I seriously think in put Pixel (Lazy Town) as my profile image, now today I'm thinking again...

HI Dennis,

I figured out that the Garage Forum on Truespace forums has a lot free
plugins that people wrote.

There's also Steinie's helpful links, and:

and

and clintonman has stuff too...where's that site....

Thanks for the welcome and info, leonregis and tylerzambori.

I never saw 6.5 or 6.6 operate (my last version was 6.0), so I won't have to un-learn anything from that tangent.

I have downloaded a boatload of tutorials from the Caligari site. Is there anything else I should hurry up and download there, before it is gone? (And/or, 3rd party stuff that may disappear soon.)

Thanks,

Dennis

This is a backup of the trueSpace forums, up to March 2009 I believe.
So you should find a lot of free stuff there.

:bananahi: Hello to all!

I was a periodic lurker over at Califorum since I purchased GameSpace a couple years ago. Recently took up the offer to get TS for free, but am sad to see that it will soon be necroware. Thanks to Prodigy for starting this new community, I will definitely try to be more than just a lurker here!

Now if only I can find some time to actually start using TS…

Thank you of mentioning of my name. My aim is to be a part of the tscommunity. It is important to get opinions of what you do and I think tscommmunity is a good place to do it. I will come back on this issue. Overall I think the World Wide Web is the most important thing to peace. As an example: My son (a Swede) has a German friend who helps him with the German language homework, got a close friend in USA and comunnicates with young peoples all over the world. I think there will be a better world in the future with the WWW. You don't starts war with people you know well.

For me I have used TS since 2005 and still learning. My work as an Art and Crafts teacher involves a lot of my time and there is no so much time as I want to use for CG with TS and Vue as I want. I was educated in the old times then the computer almost not were invented. We had to do renderings by hand and now the computer has become (for me) an another interesting tool among pencils and brusches. If there were time I would like to introduce this for my pupils. Sadly the Swedish government is not investing enought money in the educational system to support this.

Just to remind you all that TS is still not quite dead yet.

First of all, MS will have to put out an OS that will inspire enough of us to get of off XP.

Second, 7.6+ comes with the LE scripting environment so there will be some that will continue to write scripts to make the product more interesting.

Third, the SDK is free. As such, there will be some that will get into plugin development that way.

Without a doubt there are limitations to what TS can do. That said, TS can still do quite a lot. Perhaps if you think of the idea that the special effects software that created Star Wars had 1/2 the power of TS..... although they did have a supercomputer render farm .... lol.....

There is a lot in TS that you can do.

I think TS one of the most complete 3D environment....

Model: The best thing that he can do!
Renderer: He comes with an amazing standard renderer, but if you want more quality you need to buy or download other renderer.
Animation: A little bit complicated in Truespace but I think that their total potential was never be used.
Physics: Not a perfect system but only he being there is a big step! And he does well...
Formats: He can save a lot of file formats, since the images to the videos...
Plugin Development: It's not good at all, but if we don't have any SDK to TS he would be 7 feet underground! But if he was opensource, man!

That was a fast analysis and if you want I can fill a whole page talking about Truespace ;)

well, plugin development kinda fell apart due to the whole MS/tS fiasco, though some folks are
still working on them, myself included. Scripting is a lot easier; you can perform most functions with script that you
can do with plugins, though your code is visible to all. Which can be good too, depending on
your goals.

Welcome to the forums all new users! :)

Hi, Everybody

I'm sorry to hear that Caligari is no more, but I'm happy that Truespace was made available as a free download.

Since this is my first attempt at 3D modeling, I will come back often to bug you for advice.

I've been watching Prodigy's tutorial making the Shopping Cart Wireframe. Just amazing how he manipulates that mouse, clicking here and there and voila, it's done. I've been trying to follow it, stopping the tutorial every few seconds, but to no avail. The interface just isn't quite intuitive for me. One question right of the bat, ' Does Prodigy use an add-in to Truespace to get these circles happening at the end of each operation ?' I do not recall this from the manual.

Hi Kappes Buur :bananahi:

With practice and perseverance you will reach Prodigy's abilities we are all equal, just need practice and not give up in the middle of the route.
That circles are a function of the software that captures the video, it's useful to do tutorials I don't know which is the soft, just some ''Googling'' and you will find. I like the interface of TS but he has a lot of buttons and if you know what each button do you will be a master in it. ;)

Keep Practicing

hello, i signed up a few months ago to ask a question but amazingly i don't think i ever asked that original question(maybe i did but i just don't remember). i'm a developer and i'm currently working on an rts and am using truespace as my modeler, however due to the limited file types available for exporting(or rather my lack to want to write loaders based around other file formats(originally i did do .x but found that re-importing my objects caused problems)) i've decided to simply create a plugin for a filetype specifically written by me for my needs(which is only really geometry, uv, normals, and materials, and later animation)

so hello, and hope to help out other developers that simply want an easy to read file format, without much overhead

Hi folks!

I'm newbie so im not altogether sure whats up with the forum move etc. but i made sure to grab all the video tutorials from the other forum before i registered lol

I'm currently trying to learn 101 different things at the same time including 3D modeling, texturing and animation to create content for a solo MMORPG game project, so if anyone has any pointers for a poor, confused newb who has clearly bitten off, perhaps not more than he can chew, but certainly something thats going to take a long time to digest - anything appreciated

P.S. i know an RPG, let alone an MMORPG is a huge task, but it is an attempt to transform an old abandonware 2D isometric game into 3D version - so all i really need to do is pop the characters out of the page ;)

Well.. starting from scratch? none. lol

But i have in the past made a massive gameplay mod, and a separate administration mod for an old shooter game called STARSIEGE: Tribes.

This included:

Stripping apart, cleaning and restructuring the existing code to improve speed and stability for gameplay and hosting servers.

Redesiged and made major additions to the players inventory options (new armour classes, weapons, deployable items - fairly standard stuff for a shooter game i know)

Completely redesigned the administration system, making the voting system far more flexible by adding much more specific options, and giving the server administrator(s) the ability to dynamically change all server aspects without the need
to restart their server.

And lastly designed a new spawn options system for the admin console allowing various different inventory loadout options for players depending on the restrictions or presets defined by the admin.

All in all it was basically a complete rewrite, improving speed by ~15-20%, more than quadrupling the game content, and giving admin all the tools they needed without the need for downtime!

Now about my current project.. the only thing im REALLY concerned about is setting up a game engine from scratch - totally new territory for me seeing as everything ive done up till now has modding existing games in some way or another :| Oh yeah, i dont actually have any real programming training in any language.. it's hard to explain but when i see code i just kind of understand it.. always have done :?

that's alot, but still as you said writing a game engine is no easy task, firstly i'd suggest finding a good graphics api(openGL, DirectX(although these are very close to the hardware and require a good understanding of how the hardware+physical data looks like to communicate to the hardware, but are the most flexible in creating unique looking games)

once you understand how to setup graphics you then need to learn how to communicate over a network
and if it's an mmorpg your aiming at, you need to be able to handle thousands of simutaneous connections(but start small with a couple of connections and build up from their)

than you can actually start building your game, figuring out how to handle levling, inventory, communication, quests, etc, is a very very tough tasks, ontop of that graphics that well be needed, customization capability's, and these are only a few categories of the work that is required to build an rpg, yet alone an mmorpg

i wish you luck, but i've seen many people with your claims, and your ambitions that have never created anything close to their final goal, so i'm very skeptical at your abilitys to do so, but again, good luck with your endevour

if your trying to get a certain model format out of truespace by loading it into another modelor, that's a slow process you can do what i've done and write a plugin that will optimize your pipeline by being able to directly export an object from ts, if your using truespace as your main modelor writing a plugin for a file type you want is defiantly the best solution=-)

Re: Welcome to all newcomers

Post by unklejman »

Hello all. I'm a newcomer to this forum, but not really to trueSpace. I started using trueSpace S/E when I was 12 back in 1995. I was a regular in the #truespace IRC (which still exists on galaxynet) and on the trueSpace mailing list. I even made runner up and honorable mention in the Caligari monthly contests. (Here and Here).

I have since switched to 3D Studio Max and it is my main go-to app for 3D. Lately though I have been doing a lot of After Effects-heavy work.

On a whim I decided to visit Caligari.com, just to see what was going on, and was saddened to read the letter from Roman. It actually made me tear up a bit.

You see, trueSpace was quite integral in getting me to where I am today. If it wasn't for Roman Ormandy and the development team at Caligari making a fully featured 3D package at such a nice introductory price, I probably wouldn't have started learning as young as I did.

If any of you older guys are still out there, thanks for the support and encouragement through my younger years. It was a great time.

I hope to hang out around here and maybe participate in some monthly challenges in order to get the rust out of my 3D technique.

Welcome to the Forums Unklejman!

Enter most contests you can, it's really fun and even worth-learning (if what I said exists). Also I see that you have a sizable portfolio, so if you want and have time you could put some of those pics or videos in the Finished ArtWork.

I also started learning when was very young and now how important is the support, for family, friends and even cool strangers we encounter here that along time gets more known than much real life friends. I use tS since 2002 or 2003 when I was 7 - 8, in general in the first years I never did something that worth, but after 10 or 11 things change...

Anyway I hope see you around in some contests and even posting tutorials about 3D Max, because we lack of users of other softwares so maybe you can attract other 3D max users.

Greetings from Brazil

now that I've taken care of the social convention,
I'll be off to suggest this site have a wiki in a separate new thread.

Hi all, New poster but an oldtimer from MetasequoiaLE2.24 experiences, which is what brings me here.

I checked out Ts 7.6 from a person's recommendations on our flight sim's development pages. We're in the process of adapting the sim to Collada with integral animation. Right now the sim is just getting the rendering and physics engine overhauled with new code.

What I would like to know is this, Will Ts7.6 be able to work with either .lwo or .cob file exports from Metasequoia, and export them to at least Collada 1.41 or 1.5 files with either vertex or morphing animation integrated?

Is anyone considering doing a Metasequoia importer plugin? I haven't been able to find through your search help if there is any importing to Ts 7.6 for any of these really old creaky formats.

I sound like a complete noob at this, but the fact is I am. I'm completely in the dark about integral animation. I like the interface of Ts and am getting to know the functions better, although I think my development machine is a bit on the raw edge of adequate.

Thanks in advance.

There is two file menus in trueSpace7....
TS6 Files = Model
Files = Workspace

With your object selected, select File/Save from the Workspace file menu.
In the Save as Type, select the dae format.
This exports in Collada 1.4.1

Yes I know it does, I'm looking for a way to import my already created files into Workspace, if it's possible.

From reading this forum it appears I need to have the "model" half of Truespace for this to work, as I just downloaded and installed tS7.61B8 standalone. My original files are in .ac and .mqo, and I can easily convert them to .cob, .x, and .lwo. But it appears that I dont have the right files in (library?) to do so? Probably getting ahead of myself here.

hey there. I don't think anyone is working on a metasequoia importer yet.
I just checked the site though; looks pretty good. How do you like it?

I doubt it, but you should be able to Load a cob, lwo, and or x file through the Model's TS6 Files/Load/Object menu.

Well I've modeling with it since 2001, what made it nice for me was it's simple intuitive interface, when I saw the little scene and object mouse manipulators in Truespace I was thrilled to see that someone still makes a GUI not based on hotkeys

I've got some screenshots of models I've made for Richthofen's Skies.

as you can see the edit panel is crude but it works well enough,

My in game screenshots are pretty low res because my last development 'puter was an ancient old thing.

Well hay every one!

Hopefully I'm remembered by some of you folks. I've been out of touch for a while working way down in the southern Gulf of Mexico. Most of my animation projects have either been archived or lost for one reason or another.

Most of my 3D work in the last 18 (or so) months has been in exploring all the nuances of exporting a tS aircraft model for MakeMDL conversion for MS Flight Simulator aircraft and scenery models.

So far my FS hanger has added a Sopwith Pup, Folker D triplane, North American P51-D, MacDonell Douglas MD-83, a custom high wing cooperate carrier, and a toy Mickey Mouse airplane I used to play with as a kid.

It's been quite an adventure muddling through all the MS SDKs and trying to interpret instructions intended for GMax users and then figuring out how to alter the X file model according to those instructions. I've learned a lot about X file formats along the way.

Remembering that there have been many request over the years from different tS users on how to get a tS created aircraft into MSFS, I began writing an indexed tutorial on the subject, but I started to wonder if the tutorial would actually meet the needs of many or if it merely answered my need to teach.

If anyone here would like to see a complete tutorial on this subject, let me know.

PS I see my avatar doesn't quite fit my forum rank. I wasn't always a pettyofficer 2nd class but I was never a marine!

It's too rewarding to watch folks learn how to create 3D models and actually be able to add their work to a working software. I can't let that fade away ... I'm a teacher at heart. 3 years has produced a couple of decent content modelers!

Hi everybody, after a long period of neglect, I'm starting to get back into TrueSpace. I did a lot of work (mostly models) with 4.3, didn't like the interface changes made with version 5, and kind of lost track after that.

Now, on a Windows 7 PC, I'm looking at 7.6 and feeling like I'm looking at a completely different program. I'm going slowly through the tutorials...

Anyway, I'm glad I came across this site and I hope to gain knowledge from all of you. Perhaps, once my feet are a bit wetter (and less cold) I may actually contribute.

Welcome to U3DA Null! We are always glad to see new people here.
I can relate to favoring 4.3 over the later versions because I felt the same way.
Make sure you check out the "New Users" threads where you can find all kinds of helpful stuff.

We have the most helpful and friendly 3D artist coming to this site so don't be afraid to ask for help.
Our common interest here is trueSpace and 3D art but discussing other software is allowed.
