Lightworks Competition
Hi all,
have you noticed that there is a competition at Lightworks?
http://www.lightworkdesign.com/comp_entry"
All images must be rendered in Lightworks though, so no Vray or other renderengines are allowed.
I am working on a room scene and working on the lights setup to make it as best as possible with IBL and Arealight for globalillumination and omnis to produce some colorbleeding effect. The windows with diffused glass are material lights for the incoming skylight. This gives a nice diffused lighteffect.
Cheers.

Re: Lightworks Competition
That looks really nice, I still really like lightworks.
There were some quality lightworks images like this in the original Caligari forums that used Fast GI, if my memory is correct.
Is there any chance of uploading the scene so I can take a look at the light settings? Perhaps one without the objects?
Anyway, very nice work.

Re: Lightworks Competition
hi Benji,
about the FastGI images in the old forum, that was probably me. (nickname was Moppie back then) I still use this shader in certain situations and if used in combination with other shaders like Shader Magic you can come up with really nice results. Though the rendertimes can be a bit long depending on the complexity of the scene. FastGI also do not make use of multithreading.
To give you an idea how the lights are set up I've included a "roomscene" zipfile. Notice that the light coming through the window is a material light, so the glass becomes the lightsource.
Hi Marcel,
still working on the scene but I think I am heading in the right direction. Thanks.
By the way, I've seen your work and want to compliment you on the designs you have made for the parfume bottles. Also the animations are great and must have been lots of work and rendertime.
Cheers.

Re: Lightworks Competition
but look at Lightworks 8.5 features - it does have GI !
good luck :) btw: that scene is awesome!
with an old lightworks of truespace, this could be really nice challange. battle of smart ideas how to make it look like real looking.

Bitkar, it would have been great if trueSpace had this new version of the Lightworks renderengine. Indeed with real G.I.

Re: Lightworks Competition
Most of the time, we believe the image quality compared to its photorealistic appearance. It is a pity that we forget the artistic side that does not depend on that. Since the rendering engines are very powerful, the interest of an image is its content, it expresses and style.
1 - If you should judge a picture by imagining it is a real photo: the result often seems more commonplace for a real photo because its value does not depend on its realism. A design will be judged for his idea, form and utility.
2 - If the design is not the priority, then we must judge the outcome as a work of art in the same way an illustration or a painting. Everything is based only on a technical feat is to become unattractive very quickly.
In the case of a Lightworks Competition, these details can make the difference between all the competitors who show good render. Ask yourself the question: a good render ok, but a render to show what? Maybe you will have more chance to win.
I say that because as a designer, i know i sell idea, not only beautifull render. I use the render to have a better chance of winning. But this is not essential.

Re: Lightworks Competition
Thanks Marcel. These are truly words of wisdom that you've spoken. Indeed the artistic input is very important otherwise it's getting boring very easily, like the many photographic Vray interior renderings that I have seen. All are very beautiful but they all look very much the same. Like in a miss Universe competition it becomes difficult to make a choice
. But because being it a competition from Lightworks renderengine you are more or less focussed on what the renderengine is capable of right? I hope I can come up with a scene that has both in it: a bit of quality and a bit of artistic mood.
Cheers.

Re: Lightworks Competition
Hey, Thanks for posting this downloadable scene. Now I have a better understanding of materail lights and how they work. They really do make a great difference in the final rendering.
Your images are really the best of all the ones I have seen.
You have a much faster computer than I have as this scene pretty much brings mine to a halt with all those lights. Is there a way to change the object used for the lights to a much simpler mesh shape?

awesome work, Buzz! very inspiring... I'm also going to have a look at that light setup because I know lighting plays a BIG role in you scene composition
Hoping you do well in the competition, don't know if I will take part though... will have a look

Great renders
I'm with fahembree though it dragged my dual core down to a drunken crawl, I doubt I could add anything else to the scene without the smell of burning lol

Re: Lightworks Competition
Hehehehe... time for an upgrade guys! QuadCore is almost standard these days.... lucky me.
Indeed the scene is a bit slow to render on some older machines, that's mainly because of having
the glass in the windows act like a light source casting shadows. I am still working on that, figuring
out a way to reduce the rendertime. Of course the shadow casting can be turned off, that will help
and because being it a bit of diffuse skylight coming through the window, perhaps it is better to do
it without shadow casting. In stead I also am experimenting with a area light placed near the glass
on the INSIDE of the room, with shadow casting on. That works definitely faster and gives enough
shadow effect on the objects inside the room and thingies on the wall. Of course the IBL inside the room
is needed to have some global illumination effect, casting some nice shadows. (I've attached an image
to it to add some colouring) In helping to make the scene come to life, I've placed a large area light (blueish)
on the left side simulating a window or something on the opposite side of the room.
Remember: If you can't make it, fake it! Just play with different light sources like paint on canvas,
to make your scene come alive and interesting. That's why I called my projects on the old Caligari forum: "Painting with light".
Here is another scene using the same approach in lighting.
Cheers.

Re: Lightworks Competition
Theuns, the model of the couch and the artwork was not made by me, these are existing models. The rest of the scene is made by me. The plant objects are in fact images with an alpha channel, projected on a plane. This can be a bit tricky (different lighting) because they have to fit in to your scene. Not easy to tell how much time it costed me setting up this scene. It was done without any plans. I was looking for a new way of showing a fireplace in a nice room for a business-contact of mine. What I do know is that the lighting took some time before I got it the way I wanted. And the textures of course, the better the quality, the better the rendering. The details in the textures in this last image are there because I always render out with 2x AA. That really makes the difference.
Marcel, that tv set experiment of you is really useful. Can it be used on the modelside?
Cheers.

Dear trueSpacers,
I am happy to announce that my Skyscraper render has won the Lightworks competition. trueSpace, with the older version of the Lightworks render engine without G.I., is still capable of squeezing out an image that can compete
with others.
Cheers.

The best tool of a software is the user.
It is a good thing to remember that the computer calculates only what we do.
6 of last 10 winners of the ligthwork competition are truespace users. They should make a plugin to use the latest version of ligthwork with TS!

Re: Lightworks Competition
I've had similar problem but I think it is because I don't have enough memory or processing power. If I delete the IBL (image base light) it renders ok.
I also get error message on loading file that shader "YAAMANEKO Fresnel" cannot be found. Don't know if that is related to the IBL or not.
I also set my display to wire frame so file is easier to work with.

Re: Lightworks Competition
After more tests, i don't see it need Yamaneko shader, but in the scene material list, one texture need the shadermagic shader but with some specific smb files with the name microscope4c.smb and microscope6a.smb, these files are not present in the zip file
and i think there is too much loclight placed in the room.
