Even though I believe I think I understand the rules, could you clarify a couple of things. 1, Are we supposed to model the ship as well as design it? 2. Our own designs can be any style we want as long as the ship meets the required specifications? 3. 35.000 polygons? Since most here (I think) still use trueSpace could you say how many verts that should be instead? or if you know how to check the polycount of a scene in tS, please share. 4. Considering you wish to have the files as well, do you have anything specific in mind for these ships? You mentioned a possible film project.

Ok, no further questions :D

My Athena would have fit right into this challenge, maybe like a scout vessel/light freighter.
Considering I see myself as something as an expert(?) on designing spaceships with realistic functionality I suppose I have no choice but to enter in this competition. So count me in. Possibly I'll even build one of each, I dunno, I'll see if I can find the time.

Yay I'm glad you got inspired to compete in this one! :bananacool2:

Now to answer your questions:
MikomDude wrote:1, Are we supposed to model the ship as well as design it?
Yes, model and design. Y0u need to upload a finished model of your the concept design or your own design inspired by the concept art.
MikomDude wrote:2. Our own designs can be any style we want as long as the ship meets the required specifications?
Yes and no. Yes, they should include the required specifications. No, because technically the idea is to base your designs off the concept designs provided in the competition. But maybe, feel free to throw in your preferences and ideas to the existing cocnept design. It is not strict, they are just concept designs. It's like working for a studio, if you can think something better, there is no harm to show it to the art director, maybe he'd like it. But you still have to respect the director's vision of what he wants.
MikomDude wrote:3. 35.000 polygons? Since most here (I think) still use trueSpace could you say how many verts that should be instead? or if you know how to check the polycount of a scene in tS, please share.
In the WS side you can view polygon, trigon and Ngon info with this plugin kindly developed by one of my TS hero's Clinton. :worship:

Download Object/Scene Stats

You also need to download and install, before using the stat tool, his Clinton's Plugins Package

MikomDude wrote:4. Considering you wish to have the files as well, do you have anything specific in mind for these ships? You mentioned a possible film project.
Yes, there is a film project I have written, scripted, story boarded (400 drawings) and began producing with sound and concept design. There is also a business plan for an opensource product/studio online to produce this film. I have recorded most of the dialogue with some proffessional Colombian actors from the national television, but production has halted due to sound editing issues and me hitting a wall realizing I can't produce this on my own.
The movie is aimed as a short feature of 15 minutes, action, spaceships, aliens, invasion, strange planet colonies among other things, dispair, lot's of character development, politics and triumph.. but there is a possibility I make it a television series instead. Next month there is a possiblity that the current company I work for is going to sell our products in Los Angeles to Discovery Kids and the like: doors are open, and we also have the sales representative of Lazy Town, Jim Kusher or something, interested in what we are doing down here. So this film is a series of products with a similar twist to that of Starwars that I hope to continue producing.

But here is a rundown:

Ship 1: Hero's orginal ship, it's his day job, an interplanatery freighter pilot. It is a series of a more coyboyish company run by a Han Solo type, once a livestock farmer, now one of the largest interplanatery tranport tycoons of the 12 moons.
Ship 2: The richer business franchises' ships, mainly prized for their agriculture, horticulture and livestock farming methods and transport to and from the central inplanatery space station of one of the larger colonies on this moon.
Ship 3: Purahil, son of one of the richer tycoons in the Colony flies his scout vessle, pimped up to his liking searching for adventure. He's our hero's best friend, after our hero's girlfriend ofcourse.

Maybe later I'll tell you more about it.

Thanks for the plugin Draise (and Clintonman). I can't believe I never found this before. In fact, most of my old Clinton-plugins are gone since I re-installed trueSpace acouple of months ago.

As for your film, will it be a continuation of Firefly? lol just kidding, it's just the first thing I thought of when reading your description.

Sounds interesting, as yes I know how hard it is to start a project like that on your own. Me, and one other person, started a small animated series called "Adventures in Egypt". It was based on an old Lego series. I wrote the episodes, made concept designs and modeled and she also did modeling and animating. I also had nearly all of the dialogue recorded, the script for the first episode completely finished and we also had a couple of models finished. Unfortunately she lost her job and I was also trying to get a job around that time meaning the project stopped nearly as quickly as it started. It was a real shame, the idea of making small 5 minute episodes and then putting them on YouTube was quite fun I thought, and still do.

Question: Do I have to create a ship that represents your example? Can the ship be organic?

LOL! :D ACTUALLY.. there IS a series of alien ship designs that are purely organic. They grow their ships. I have a concept design for that too. I have only one, as it's very hard to design a cool looking sexy organic ship. So I got this hourglass figure of a flying seed that opens up like a chestnut that shoots a laser beam.

Would you like to work on that ship?

Finished with this entry, may do another one. :D

I included the zip file here (hope it takes as I seem to have a 3 file limit on upload)
The engines are high poly for what they are (5,000) but the Harvester Spacecraft is less than 500 polygons.

Oh cool. :bananathumb:

Another would be great! You do have up to 30,000 polys to play with, no harm. Detail is encouraged! ;)

I'll take a look at the file.

Well, I've never really tried to model a space craft before, so that was my first one.

I'll try to make the next one more detailed.

Draise,
I had been building a ship for this BUT didn't read your rules properly. Nothing wrong with the rules,
I just misunderstood them. I'll post my ship in another WIP thread but it can't be submitted to this Challenge.
Very nice entries so far!

Ummmmmmm.... what happened to the other contestants? Should I cast a vote on the three there? Should I put in the other contestants?

Edit: I added the others I were following as honorable mentions. Maybe I will make a second prize.
