Is this what Microsoft did with trueSpace?
"Microsoft releases 3D printer app for Windows 8.1"
Microsoft has released a 3D printing application for Windows 8.1 called 3D Builder. It allows users to view, design and prepare objects for printing and includes a library of editable objects to help users familiarize themselves with the software....

It's possible they gleaned technical knowledge from trueSpace, using it, along with other acquired technologies, as a baseline or starting point.
I have been considering getting a 3d printer for building stuff for folks but, I'd have to really define a target market / niche. I am not there yet.

Get a 3D printer and make really inexpensive 3D Printers.

They could have used the engine and just cut out all the icons, replacing with their own. That way they could expand later and just expose new functions as needed without having to develop them.spacekdet wrote:No way.

Who knows?

Well, I hope they did something with it.
I'd hate to think it was bought, left to die on the vine and then buried somewhere in Redmond.

I would certainly hope they did use it for something!!!
I wonder if one could buy TS again from them and keep on developing it?

Re: Is this what Microsoft did with trueSpace?
Let`s say somebody is really able to buy trueSpace free like Ton did with Blender. Who should develop it then? It would take years to find yourself into the code. And you haven`t implemented anything then. Just tried to understand the code. trueSpace Workspace side is a code monster. It had its reason why the development needed this long.
Point is, there is already an open source 3D app. Blender. So the developer forces who are able to deal with a this high math stuff like a 3d render and animation software are already bound. The original developers will not return. They need to make money for a living. And the handful hobby developers here at this board are a too weak force to bring trueSpace back onto track. It was more an alpha than a beta. And is out of development since five years now. Which is a eon in the 3D world.
Let`s face it. trueSpace development will not continue

Re: Is this what Microsoft did with trueSpace?
Yes, what Tiles said.
Plus, why would you do that if you could? There is plenty of other such software out there and more being made all the time. True, most of us here liked TS best and few others, if any, are as easy to learn and use but that is no reason to obsess on TS.
If you have skills usable to develop modeling-rendering software you should get a job with a company that does that ... or if you prefer give your effort to an open source project. If a company had the resources to revive TS it would be a bad move. Much better to create your own or buy into a current development project (like MS did, they got the people, the expertise, as well as the code).

True points. Dreams are free.
I would kill for a better viewport in Blender though.
EDIT: What happened to that guy who started developing a windows 8 3D app with trueSpace concepts we heard about a while back?

Re: Is this what Microsoft did with trueSpace?
Ton Roosendaal, Lead Blender developer, reacts:
When I first saw Caligari on Amiga I was really blown away… imagine, over 20 years ago now, and it had full-window 3D perspective editing, drawing objects in solid even. To my knowledge this was the first editor dropping the traditional 4-split view, which was a big inspiration for me. In the years that passed I only occasionally looked at what trueSpace did, but I know they kept exploring innovative 3D editing, moving user input to the 3D window where ever possible. They even introduced integrated collaborative workflow via internet in their latest release.
Hats off to the Caligari team, and especially to founder Roman Ormandy. You’ve written a piece of CG history nobody will forget.
I know how it is to be locked up by corporate demands, and the tragedy of seeing your baby slip away in other hands… Blender fortunately escaped this route, and hopefully Roman will – in a few months when the dust has settled – find the method to make Microsoft accept a community buy-out too. Reading trueSpace forums, there’s a massive and very devoted community there, don’t underestimate their powers!

Re: Is this what Microsoft did with trueSpace?
Naturally, I disagree with those who say it would be useless to release the source code. Caligari was pretty much rewriting trueSpace from scratch and they were doing well with it until the sellout. Newtek tried to rewrite Lightwave but had to give up because of how difficult it was. During the sellout the focus seemed to change to the goal of making something that Microsoft wanted and bug fixes and new features just stopped coming for months. I don't think the code became so unwieldy that they couldn't do anything with it, but it was that they weren't allowed to do anything interesting (to me) with it.
If the source was released there wouldn't be any grand changes happening right away. It would be small changes. Most likely bug fixes and the big changes would come later. Sure, Blender already exists, but even with the big changes some people still don't like it and refuse to learn it or use it. Open source trueSPace would be a good alternative. Blender looks like it's written in C. Truespace workspace used C++. That's an assumption on my part. The SDK is C++ so I assume the core is C++ as well. IF this is true then I suspect it would be easier to modify and expand on the truespace core.
All that being said. I have to agree with the naysayers about the possiblility of an open source trueSpace. I don't think it will ever happen and I don't think Microsoft ended up using any of the trueSpace technology. What a waste.

Just in case. The petition still exists. 100 people was a bit too weak though ... http://www.petitionspot.com/petitions/opentruespace/"
Haven`t they used big parts of trueSpace for their Google Earth pedant? Virtual Earth?

Virtual Earth seems to have been turned into 'Bird's Eye' views on Bing Maps.
Nothing 3D about it anymore.

Makes no sense to open a new thread. The few active souls at this board here have already signed the petition. And there is also no hope that this will change. Four million downloads and just hundret people who signed the petition speaks a clear language.didn't know about the petition, will you start a new thread with that link and see how many people we can get now? maybe there are a lot more people that would be interested...
