Steam punk R2D2

Post by nigec »

Marcel posted a pic in another thread of a steam punk R2 so I though I'd have a go with SU.. there's abit of "artistic license" as it isn't a direct copy but still fun to do.
Rendered with Thea

Nice work Nigec! Great idea to turn this little R2D2 unit into a Steampunk version. What about C3PO?
Thea renders beautifully.

...and here I thought it was a Cappuccino Machine for the SMC Challenge...

Very nice work.
Thea looks to be a very nice rendering engine.

Thanks guys :D

Yes its Sketchup 6 pro.. version 7 hangs for some reason , saying that all the plugins used are freebies and work with the free version of Sketchup, ie there's one that extrudes curved surfaces.. which was used for the wood, the holes in the dome, the other was a chamfer and round edge plugin, also a grill plugin for the floor.

I like Thea a lot, it'll have interactive rendering shortly, the image was a photon render, it would of been better if I'd used an unbias method but I didn't have time.. plus the daughter had pinched my network laptop lol

I haven't sussed human-ish shapes in SU yet so C3PO may have to wait lol

The Boiler Operators Union Rep stopped by and asked something about a pressure-relief valve.

those are for pansies :D

Yeah I'm thinking about it Finis, there's another character I want to try first ;) and maybe make R2 abit more grubby.
here he is rendered with Thea's bias renderer, I haven't touched R2 apart from making the red emitter duller and the glass on the lense and different mats on the corridor

would you consider making a how-to tutorial of your r2d2 so that us SU newbies can also learn how to make great looking models and renders like that?

"steam punk" is usually a modern item re engineered to run on steam :)
