Older Pontiac Streetscape

Post by Rhino169 »

I did this as a visualization showing the upgrades that the city of Pontiac was going to go through back in 2002. The architect only had a plot plan construction drawing of the new street, sidewalk, trees and planters & brochures of the new green street lights, garbage cans, newspaper stands, etc.

I was able to take both of these and create the "after" image before we had even started construction. The perspective view was used as a large poster that was displayed at a pre-construction party for the city.

What are those green posts on the curve? Impact barriers or hitching posts?

Excellent visualization ! :bananaclaus:

Thanks! :)

yes, they are barriers mostly to keep the cars from flying off into the pedestrians waiting at the corner on the sidewalk.

I 've driven through town since they have been installed and they seem to be winning the war, although a few have been bent by a semi truck that may have taken the turn too tightly. :D

So that's what it looks like...I haven't been down there in years!

Looks pretty close to reality, except the weather is better in 3D.

The word of the day is 'bollard'.

Go half a block south and you can, via Street View, walk around inside the 'Electricity' Bar.
The decor has to be seen to be believed.

Amen to the bollard!

Wow you got pretty close to the actual spot in google maps!

I believe my image shows a utopian version of Pontiac. :ugeek:

Google recorded the financial manager taken-over run city of Pontiac, truly a low point in the city's history.

If you've seen the movie remake of Red Dawn, Red Dawn2, this is the street about 2 blocks from here where some of it was filmed! :bananacool2:

Great to see you doing 3D and earning money from it! True, the real buildings or structures aren't pretty while 3D illustrations are perfected. So were the old hand colored projections architects used to do for presentations.

Finis,

Funny thing is I just had gotten back in touch with this contact yesterday and he said he may have some more work for me.. :bananadrum:

Also, if you follow spacekdet's link in google maps, you will note that the city decided to save a buck and not install the larger streetlight, street sign/traffic light large poles at the corners as shown in my image. :(

All in all, it ended up being a slight improvement 10 yrs on...

And yes, spacekdet, I am finding it odd how old the google streetview images are of downtown. Elecktricity has been there quite a while now. I have not been inside yet....I probably haunted it in one of it's older incarnations. :ugeek:

No money for streetlights? Hey, those fat pensions and free healthcare aint gonna fund themselves.
At least the EFM is on the job now.

Well if Electricity isn't your thing, go half a block north in Street View and the 'Cloud 22' head shop is open for browsing on foot. Because that's what Pontiac needs more of...cough. Yeah, it needs more happy people.

Protip: Adjust your view so that the directional arrows are visible on the street. Look for double arrows pointing towards the buildings mid block where there isn't a side street and you'll be able to 'walk' in and look around the store/building.
I've seen this in various locations around the Google maps world like Pittsburgh, Pontiac, ski shops in France, and even in bustling Sutton's Bay, MI.

Good luck with snagging more work!

Hey thanks for the "pro tip"

I was able to go into Electricity!...danced a bit and had a drink very cool! You could see the googlecam in some of the reflections of the pics.

This IS the place I went to in the late 80's..used to be called "Menage"

LOL :bananadrum: :bananaguitar:
