Light Map Maker

Light Map Maker

This freeware standalone program generates lightmaps, caustics and renderosity simulations as textures over imported objects. This is very handy to save on static scenery upon animation rendertimes.
Light Map Maker is a power software tool that helps you to create compelling lighting effects. LMM is a independent program. It's not a plug-in. It's a tool for real-time 3D developers (not only game but also web3d, product display, etc.). LMM's main feature is the addition of realistic lighting to real-time 3D scenes. LMM now supports importing/exporting of some popular 3D formats; so it's compatible with most game development software and 3D designer (e.g. 3D Studio Max, Maya, lightwave, etc).

I looked at this out of curiosity and while it looks interesting I cant see where it would fit in my pipeline.
The fur rending looks awful from the sample they show, it looks more like a sunburst that fur.
Here is their sample image.
Its says it supports Maya but after reading more it supports the OBJ format that Maya will use.
For the most part this looks like something that is good for Game Creators or Website development.

Yes exactly, this is just for creating better textures for game engines, trueSpace WorkspaceSide, web applications or other realtime render engines. It's not for major productions pipelines or a render engine for major productions.

There is a lightmap creator in Carrara plug-ins that bakes lightmap textures.

(tutorial for lightmap baking in the Inagoni Baker)

The one pointed out here seems quite a bit more sophisticated.
