Question taken from another thread, posted here for higher visibility.
Hello again!
I would like to know, how much interest is there in open-sourcing Hexagon? I'm not speaking for DAZ here, but I am interested in finding out who we have out here in the community that can contribute, and the skill sets people have. I sit in on meetings where Hexagon comes up, and it would be great to say, "We have a huge group out here ready and waiting to contribute to an open-source project."
Really, this is something that I would like to know, and something I can share with the team here at DAZ.
Thanks all, and looking forward to your replies,
-Hak

Re: Open Source Volunteer Idea - Hexagon
They also said this.
Apparently some people at DAZ are considering doing all the work of ripping out all the code they are not allowed to open up. So the "not doable" thing was mostly about it being an immense investment of work and time into something that gives them nothing back, an effort that isn't worth it from the business side.
The result would most likely not runnable and need considerable work replacing those parts. So do we have someone here who can do it and is willing to? Because otherwise we won't have anything other than what we have currently - a program in a dead coma.
And remember, there was talk from DAZ about making Bryce open source at one point too.
It looks like another ts

Dunno Pugman,
Unless they are talking about the bridges to DAZ programs and/or formats which is their code - just a guess.

Re: Open Source Volunteer Idea - Hexagon
That was exactly what I was talking about in the nurbs thread.
That would be a project for developers with some future.
I´m not a coder but i would contribute with what I can do namely finding out what improvements could be made with the interface and testing....
Thats something Hexagon lacked it had some not ironed out bugs and some of the interface could have been better.....
Plus with all the aplications going 64 bit thats also a tough challenge but worth it for big models and its future.
The greatest downside of Sketchup is also that its not made 64 bit and can use much more memmory for much bigger projects......
I never liked that fact that only blender was an open source option..... althoughits better then it was before its still very cryptic and relies on
hotkeys for fast operation....

Re: Open Source Volunteer Idea - Hexagon
There is a lot of information missing for anyone to make an good answer on this. I checked the thread at DAZ forum and not much of information appeared in the 6 pages I read either.
First, programming a 3D program is one of the more advanced challanges a programmer can undertake. For several of the central parts you need to understand advanced mathematics - something not all of us do (I don't know engough math to help with any 3D part).
Then, there is a lot of unanswered questions...
Some of them:
*) What language is Hexagon written in?
C, C++?
*) Against which major libraries are Hexagon written? Which GUI lib? MFC? DirectX?
*) How much code is propertiary and will be removed?
*) Which license would it be released under?
Can you share code with Blender for instance?
*) How many rows of code is it?
*) How good is the documentation? Will the documention be released as well?
Perhaps it would be better to start from fresh with a entire new project under good project management with good programmers and writing it in a managed language like C# with perhaps the 3D engine writen c++ for better speed?
