trueSpace 7.x won't run, hangs on splash screen
I know this has been mentioned before as an nVidia driver issue, but I'm not so sure. Either way trueSpace is currently dead for me except for v6.6 which still works thankfully. I have an HP HDX18 with 4GB of ram running under Window 7 Ultimate 64 bit. trueSpace 7.x was working fine then one day everything stopped. Windows updates are being done, however I did nothing with the drivers, then this. Before and after the Caligari forums closed I had read through Google cache that there were issues with some versions of nVidia Drivers. At this point the post was over a year old and my current driver was several versions newer that where the issue had first shown up. Keep in mind it was working with this driver. So far I have back revved my driver and updated to know avail. I have also played with various versions of DirectX, still no luck. I have cleared the trueSpace startup configs, nothing. I have even completely removed and reinstalled trueSpace 7.x to no avail. I have also tried other older versions from 7.5x through 7.6x and still nothing. Has anyone else experienced this issue and may have some suggestions? I really want to hang in there and get this working even with a lack of support. Thanks guys/girls. Greg Huntoon.

Re: trueSpace 7.x won't run, hangs on splash screen
if it was working before , and your drivers are up to date .
Next place to look after trying the older side ts configs is to find and remove the file default.ctx from the tS7.x dir , this may be corrupted .
you can rename it to olddefault.ctx if you dont want to delete it.
Next time you open and exit tS the file will be recreated .
thanks
Paul

Re: trueSpace 7.x won't run, hangs on splash screen
Thanks for the response Paul. I did do that and still nothing. Surprisingly ts7 hangs at the splash screen before recreating the default.ctx file so I have a clue as to how far it's getting. Also surprisingly, trueSpace seems to be the only application that doesn't work, all of my other 32 and 64 bit apps work fine. At least trueSpace 6.x works fine so I still have that. I've even tried running trueSpace as an administrator to no avail as well as play with all of the compatibility modes of Windows, but keep in mind that at one point it did work without any drastic measures. I'm still at a loss as to what to try. I figure it may just start working one day. Unfortunately I don't want to re-install Windows 7 at this point just to try to get trueSpace working but I really do miss it, YafaRay, and Dave Dolman's LE fix.

Re: trueSpace 7.x won't run, hangs on splash screen
ok, on win7 I am guessing it might be that the default.ctx is also being stored somewhere in your user profile folders, and its trying to use that one , I dont have win7 to know the dir structure or how it stores them, but if you can find it and rename or remove it then it may work.
others here with win7 may be able to tell where the path is in user profiles where win7 stores application and user specific information .

Paul

Re: trueSpace 7.x won't run, hangs on splash screen
Well I did a search from the root of both my C: and D: drives for default.ctx and nothing. This got me thinking though about the registry so I also scanned for any occurrence of the string 'truespace7' and removed the accompanying data. I re-ran setup as the administrator and also ran trueSpace as the administrator and still nothing. Apparently since trueSpace won't run and the TS7.EXE process hangs at the trueSpace splash screen, trueSpace never gets to the point of recreating the default.ctx file. I had assumed the trueSpace setup would have created it, but no. You have to successfully run trueSpace once for default.ctx to get created and that isn't happening on my machine. This one really has me puzzled.?.?.

Re: trueSpace 7.x won't run, hangs on splash screen
yes very odd , as if it was running before and you had normal exits , the the default.ctx has to have been created somewhere in some folder other than the ts dirs default folder , ( unless it was deleted when you removed /reinstalled).
is win7 hiding files from you ? .
did you try update the drivers for the graphics card from nvidia directly rather than let windows update handle it.

Re: trueSpace 7.x won't run, hangs on splash screen
I am currently letting the TS7.EXE process remain idle at the splash screen for 5-10 minutes before terminating it, after that I search both drives from the root for the presence of default.ctx and nothing it never get's created. I always configure my windows to show all files so that isn't the issue, default.ctx just isn't there. Also I always download drivers to a descriptive drivers folder and install them from there to keep track of past revisions, you never know when you may have to roll back a driver.
Right now I'm playing around with the 'Debugging tools for Windows (x86) and running TS7.EXE from Windbg. So far it seems to hang right after loading the jscript.dll from \Windows\SysWow64. From what I can tell it does load the driver and just appears to hang at that point but I'm still messing around.

If only TS7.EXE would throw some errors I would have some direction on what to do but this issue has me stumped.

Have you tried looking at the event viewer. Maybe there's a clue in there.

Re: trueSpace 7.x won't run, hangs on splash screen
are you using any security software that might be blocking the jscript.dll ?
when your tS is hanging during load ,before terminating the process, look in the tS dir for Rosetta.log and PlayerD3D.log these logs may help show at the point that the loading fails as well.
edit:
just to double check, you could also run dxdiag (if its available in win7) and check to see if you are using the latest available drivers for your GPU, check the dxdiag text and cross reference with the nvidia website , .

Re: trueSpace 7.x won't run, hangs on splash screen
Well it's been a while since reporting on this, but here it is... My trueSpace works again, Yeah!!! In addition to trueSpace not working Some of my Windows 7 Gadgets were also corrupted. I was able to get all of the gadgets working except for the Calendar which had a blank orange display. Despite the posted solutions to the Calendar Gadget issue I just couldn't get it to work. After consulting with Dale Qiao a MSFT Moderator on http://social.technet.microsoft.com" he finally suggested to perform an In-place Upgrade which will not affect settings like photos, movies, documents, etc. that are saved on the computer. The steps are outlined below but keep in mind the following... this was not technically an upgrade since I'm repairing the same version of Windows 7 64 bit, also this will take several hours and you do have to Re-Activate your Windows, but it works.
1.Perform a clean boot in the current operating system.
2.Insert the Windows 7 Installation Disc to your DVD-ROM drive. If AutoPlay pops up, click “Run setup.exe” directly.
3.Click “Install now” on the “Install Windows” screen.
4.In the “Get important updates for installation” screen, it is recommended to select the first option to download latest updates for installation, if Internet access is available.
5.Check the box “I accept the license terms” to agree with the installation license and click “Next”.
6.In the “Which type of installation do you want?” screen, click “Upgrade” to perform the In-Place upgrade.
7.Then, follow the wizard to finish the In-place Upgrade process.

Re: trueSpace 7.x won't run, hangs on splash screen
Congratulations on getting your stuff working again. There was a recent upgrade to the win7 link editor fix, so you might want to get that. The previous version had some memory leaks.

Thanks Clintonman, I'm heading over there now. By the way, your Link Editor solution / fix to an essentially dead product is pure genius.

Re: trueSpace 7.x won't run, hangs on splash screen
me too, did browse the threads to see if it was mentioned but the thread I read was different from what I experienced and I didn't see this one...
just delete "default.ctx" and it started up perfectly... of course that was AFTER I reinstalled 7.61B again, which means all my keyboard mapping and config customizations is gone again
but at least I got it working..
thanks for the help guys...

BTW,
Stan gave us advise years ago that has saved me a few times...
save a backup of your "default.ctx" after everything is set the way you like.
It is like life insurance.

Re: trueSpace 7.x won't run, hangs on splash screen
hmmm, I discovered that I did it for the truespace.key file but not default.ctx ... will try and copy the tS7.6 ctx from laptop and use it for 7.61b, it should work with no problems... can't get 7.61b to work on Vista Pro for some reason so I still use 7.6 there...
