looking good, but it looks like a toy because of materials... maybe you should give a little more time to setting up materials, on wheels and so. add some reflection etc.

Yeah, I know... my texturing skills aren't very good... I haven't figured out UV mapping and all that yet :(

The bump on the wheels need to stop before it go to the side. maybe it is too hard. Try a bump map (photo) instead a procedural function. the bolts are too big. To avoid the toy look, try to put a real photo on the background (i think a desert will be good). Don't forget to create a light and a perspective view same as the photo before changing the texture. It is a good way to see what is bad or not on the texture and create a real look as a dirty texture.

thanks for all the advice guys... i know the design still needs a lot of work, this was just a 30 minute job of putting together existing parts from other HMN designs to come up with a new model... I was in a creative mood with not a lot of time to look at finer details so i focused on the modeling only...

...like i said before, i'm not very good with UV texturing, so if somebody could give me some advice on how to do that with the native tS 7.61b model side UV tools to make it look better, i'd REALLY appreciate it...

Here is a simple method for the bump of the wheel. Use a cylindrical projection and a texture with 2 bands at left and right (red cross). These part have no effect for the bump if the color is unique. The color have no importance (it is for a bump). The best is to use a photo of a wheel to create the texture (google). Change the size of the bands (photo editing, not TS) and see where the bump stop on the wheel until you have what you want. You can create a tile texture for a best control of the size of the bump.
PS: when you change the photo, the solid view of TS don't change because the photo is on the ram of the pc. if you do a render, it would be correct. Or restart TS to view the last change of the photo in realtime.

thanks for the pointers marcel, will definitely give it a try...

how about the customer UV map for the hull? the wheel texture seems pretty straight forward according to the way you described it...

It took me awhile to find this again!
I believe this one tutorial will really help you envision how to UV-map your vehicles. (it helped me years ago)
Look at his #6 lesson line. Also instead of photos use your own custom textures.
Once you get started with this method it really becomes fun. NOW you can concentrate on
creating the textures instead of the UVs.
I hope this helps you.

I like the bumps on the wheels wrapping around the sides. They look good for travel in deep sand.

KEWL Steinie, this will help A LOT! Didn't know the Caligari website was still up?

Thanks Finis, quick and easy with a bit of tweaking on the bump shader parameter settings for the best look...

thanks Steve... this is another one of my "speed modeling" exercises where I take parts of previous models I've designed before and put them together for a new role/task vehicle configuration... (https://bluestarcreations.wordpress.com ... -vehicles/) ...

Great model. Nice renders too. Would love to see this in another image where we would get more of an idea of the vehicles scale.
