Unity Indie Free

Post by Benji »

The indie license for Unity is now free. It will be interesting to see how the other indie game dev guys react.

Why oh Why whenever I seem to buy a product a couple of months later it has been made free,In future I shall refrain from purchasing software of any description and also urge others to wait before purchasing.
There is simply too much of this "Mugging" going on. :x

Yeah, I am going to have to cave in here shortly and spend some bucs on Vue. I am hoping to still be able to negotiate that $200.00 dollar deal they offered in September.

I just can't seem to control the camera in the world editor for Unity. It just moves around to fast. Almost like I jump from one part of the scene to another when I'm trying to just move a little to the left do edit one little part.

Just an update. unity 3.0 has been released. The base is free , Pro is 1500.00
the great thing about unity is that it supports a wide variety of 3D formats.

Yeah, I'm really liking v3.1. I managed to get my hands on the Pro version. Beast lightmapping, Umbra occlusion culling, MonoDevelop (source-level debugging), deferred rendering, fmod audio with new filters, new tree creator, cloth simulation, improved asset libraries, Asset Store (inside of Unity, downloads purchased assets right into your project), etc. Some really nice new features in v3.1.

Unity really is one of the best applications that I've ever worked in. Nearly everything is so simple, fast, and just works great. The only big thing I'm hoping to see improved in the 3.x series is the GUI creation. That's the one big thing that needs simplifying yet. Otherwise an amazing piece of software. Even the free version is quite powerful.

As far as I am concerned Unity is as you say awesome. Although I am using the free version to learn I hope to one day put out the bucks for the pro.

I downloaded the program 10 days ago. Now I am working on my second game - not my creation but examples from books. To have a great program with documentation is great.

I have the Kindle version of Unity 3D Game Development by Example Beginner. It is good but older version. It was 14 dollars. If you get it, get the 3.x version. It shows all the little stuff you might miss.

Its a good book. Kind of puts things in perspective. Also another good one that is for version 2 is Game Development with Unity by Michelle Menard. With any tutorials made with older versions some of the scripts may need to be tweaked or even not needed. Also check out digital tutors online (very good ) and VTC has some older but good ones.
