Apparently the cheaper, standalone version of vray for maya works with the new blender vray plugin perfectly. This means you can get the full power of vray for $249 euro, or thereabouts. The plug-in interface looks good, too.
I've been trying to figure out what to do now that truespace is gone. I've researched dozens of applications and thought very hard about what to do over the past few months. With little cash, and no desire to go into debt, I was frustrated - but this is game over for me. The only real catch is possibly getting robbed by a local vendor, but hopefully they won't mark it up too much here in oz.
I see other options mentioned on this forum (some of them pretty lame, frankly), but if you are interested in top-shelf rendering, and don't already own fryrender or something similar, then this is at least worth considering.

Re: Blender - Vray Standalone
Well, i'm currently working on a script to use vray for maya on truespace..
it is possible to do this using LE and script in the same way as yafaray does..
For me is a very long project, maybe we can start a collaborative project with others scriptors..

That would be awesome!
In any case, I'm not going to get vray right away, although definitely in 2010 sometime. Looking forward to see what you guys come up with.

PRODIGY THAT WOULD BE WONDERFUL!
V Ray from Maya is still for sale, it's so much better than the old tS version and it will keep progressing!

Re: Blender - Vray Standalone
Good to have options !
The Vray standalone or for Maya are different then Ts Vray was........
I´m also into Blender the only thing that frustrates me is the Collada exporter I cant get those animated meshes out of it as i can
get it out from Daz studio.... To many Collada slangs around...
Truespace Collada exporter is pretty good !
You say something about lame software without showing any examples of what didnt work with these.......
You must have a very large amount of examples ?

@ Benji: You like TS as much as anyone here but you are able to look realistically at the situation so I'm always interested in your analysis and decisions about 3D and related software.
I'll need a much better job to get anything but food but when I get one: $356 for VRay? That is a good deal. I'm probably migrating to Blender since free is all I can afford right now.
Is this VRay RT? I only see the $1000 VRay for Maya at Chaosgroups's site.
@ Prodigy: I really appreciate all that you have done and do for us here. It is great that you are working to use VRay for Maya in TS but you should also look realistically at the situation. Why put all that effort into TS when it will eventually become incompatible with future systems? Shouldn't you put that effort into learning other software which will probably continue long into the future and will provide you, as a professional, with the power you need?

I agree with finis, since you are a profession you need to be always on the top or if you like not underneath. I just use it because it's easy and fun, so I use it as hobby.

Re: Blender - Vray Standalone
A little googleing brought this up it might not be the Maya standalone that someone built an exporter for but it could be another development
it says " in development "
I heard something like full integration by the same developer is in progress..
At least there is some movement....
