Six-20 Hawk-Eye

Post by spacekdet »

Figured I had better post it while it was still a WIP.
hawki_sqr.jpg
Still left to model: the film crank handle.
Dunno what came over me, I've got a real one sitting on display and had been meaning to model it for a long time.
Guess today was the day.

tS 7.6/ Model/ Lightworks render.

Awesome!

Looks great!

Now all you need is a spaceship scene where Aliens abducted some poor photographer and all that is left is his camera along with some old canvas shoes.

Or, maybe not.

Bogged down trying to get fancy with the embossed text on the film crank.
Figures, it's the last part. Will probably end up faking it with a tex map.

Then I'll be damned if reality didn't intrude with it's real world problems.

ok, I lied.
Modeling the text after all; tried it with a displacement map and it worked, but it was rough.

Whew. Almost perfect.
Goofed it up a little with the fillet tool, but it won't be noticeable at the planned render distances.

The lack of perfection is disturbing me.
Criss-cross geometry caused by macrosweep and aggravated by a bad fillet.
Achieved failure trying to fix it, I have!

Looking good. :bananathumb:
Yep, sometimes you just have to get rid of the bad geometry and try again.

Finally all loaded into Workspace and re-textured.

tS 7.6; VRAY render.

I sure miss Lightworks' layered textures.

Thumps up!

I would like to see more smudge/wear on the handle, but that's just me.

Agreed.

Toned down the metal a bit.
hawkeye_8_sq.jpg
Still not quite balanced out yet.
Poking thru the settings in the existing VRay Materials Library to see how they did it.
The rivets are still too 'light' and the black metal is too 'dark'.

Then use model side. What other renderers do have texture layers?

I'll figure out a layered system oneday for Workspace.. oneday.. But I wish it was simple. It must be possible! And this looks incredible btw, very cool textures you have going on!

Here's the real one:
crank_photo.jpg
Looks more tarnished in the photo than it does in reality.

I'm liking the speed & GI of VRay, so I'm sticking to Workspace for now.
Too afraid to cross back over the bridge once I start texturing.
It's the usual; a few hours to model, a few days to texture.

But is it a render of your renderer rendering a render of a renderer? The film crank now looks like artistic plastic. Ok, it looked better in the very dark realistic picture before.

OK, I think it's time to stick a fork in this one.
It's starting to feel like I'm polishing a turd.

It's good enough for who it's for.

"Polishing a turd" Ha, ha!

No turd there. Great picture! I like the wear on the handle. The whole picture looks dark to me but we all have our screens adjusted differently.
