July MMC: Atom Baby

Post by nigec »

A few years ago I found a plan for a 1940's model boat called the Atom Baby, it's powered by a Jetex rocket motor, I built it and then realised I'd have issues finding the right motor, if I did find one the fuel was very expensive, so the one I built uses candy rocket fuel.. never had the balls to try it ...YET!
Anyway I started work on the "right" modern motor in Sketchup:

I did a test render to see how its going to look, 19 passes in Bias (Thea).. never tried clear plastic before  It could of done with longer there's some noise.
Anyway I need to make the cone on the motor smaller, then TRY to do the boat.
the tiles etc are geometry.. kinda doing a crash course in SU modeling seeing as TS wont work in DX mode for some reason

Here's the wire frame:

A close up of the rocket motor:

I probably wont be online for a few weeks so I've kinda rushed these through :D
I've never done owt as curvy in SU before so its more of a learning thing, the renders (unbias for the last two) could of been better, they are done on the default setting
The boat pic is just Rayman's light tent hdri, the motor shot used the hdri and sun to get the red to show, the material works better in bias renders

Thanks Peter
I use them quite a lot in scenes that don't need interior or exterior reflections.
I really like Sketchup too, took a long while to get my head around it but its an amazingly powerful bit of software even though it doesn't look like it is
