Can't see images without logging in.
When I visit the forum today 10-11-12 I can't see images or attachments unless I log in. I see a message instead "You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post."

Re: Can't see images without logging in.
It looks like Prodigy made some changes yesterday with Visitor permissions. I'm sure he will get it corrected soon.

Re: Can't see images without logging in.
If you want to encourage new members to sign up then change the unfriendly "You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post." to something like "You must log in to view images and attachments. Not a member? Registering is easy and free!".
The images motivate people to join at least as much as the text. Which works better: advertisement with pictures or without? You'll probably see fewer people joining not more. If the tactic works and people join so they can see the pictures then that's all they will do. They mostly won't be participating, contributing, members. It might be a case of quality vs. quantity. More isn't always better.
I have my own website/blog where I show my pictures. I have links to some of my U3DA threads for readers to see the "making of" details of my 3D stuff. Now those people have to sign up and can't just look at my stuff?
I'd rather not have to log in unless I'm going to post but it is easy so no big deal.

Re: Can't see images without logging in.
I understand you Finis, are all good points.
About the message, i'm agree.. i'll try to find inside the code to change that.. good suggestion
About if is the best way or not, i'm not sure.. Always you will find people that prefer to take stuff without even say thanks.. that is good? no.. have a bunch of new user that only want to download and then quit.. also is not good..
The perfect solution it would be that people start to participate in the same way as the old caligari, we are already offering a nice place where learn 3d, chat, have some fun..
People use to demand more than that and for free.. and that is sad, and some cases not right.
I suggest "if others are agree" to start a poll and see..

Re: Can't see images without logging in.
Feels like one of facebook's dirty tricks...but I sort of understand why Augusto made the change.
I've never logged in to facebook to see anything when presented with a 'login to see this' screen... my usual reaction is to just leave.
I think Finis is right- the wording for the invitation to join should not be irritating.
I don't care one way or another if a non-member can see any image I post, after all, I wouldn't post it if I didn't want people to see it.

I like the discussion... I would leave art open, as an attraction, and then the resources (downloads) only available to members, so they want to be a part of the art of this forum.

Re: Can't see images without logging in.
It's an old thread but I thought I'd just quickly mention
I use [Img] tags so I can get higher resolution pictures up here by way of simply re-using the images I post on deviantart or photobucket as the attachment system on here does my head in by forcing me to save a seperate lower resolution image just for this site...which puts my efforts into making high res to waste
So by accident I've just worked around this viewing permissions...whups
My personal thought is that it won't work. If you look at the bigger sites they showcase people's work as the banners to the forum and so on, they leave everything open so visitors can see...Otherwise people are just joining based on text and not the 3D content, not sure really.
Maybe limiting restrictions on downloading resources such as materials and scenes and such but not looking at the pictures or else all people will do is just go elsewhere where it's easier.
EDIT: By that I mean I second Draises notion which I completely didn't see until now
To be honest. Most, if not all of the core members (me included) came here from the Califorums and entirely use TS...I know Finis and JamesMC are making forrays into different software and Stenie uses Sculptris and so on but it might be an idea to find new ways of making it obvious we're not just, or primarily are a TS forum...somehow.
Just a thought
