Dilema
Ok here is my situation. When I first got the laptop that I use for everything, it had 2gb of ram and I ran WIN 7 on it. Well TS did not run good, looking back it might have been the amount of ram, because I have a dual core processor. So I downgraded back to XP. Well fast foward to now, I have installed 2 more GB for a total of 4GB, however XP only sees 3GB, so I have lost 1GB. Now would it be better to install WIN 7 to be able to use all 4GB, or just keep running XP. I really do need to install Win7 as my degree focuses on Win7, so I could get used to it, howerver I want to make sure TS has a good home to run in. So with all that rabmling, what would you guys do. I have a choice of either 7 or 7x64.

Re: Dilema
I would say, if you are using Workspace,
Win7 64 all the way baby.
I am not sure about model side. I have not used it in quite some time.
I use Win7 64 bit on my laptop. It has a dual core (64 bit). Works great with 4 GB;
tS Workspace runs fine in it.

2GB is fine for me with XP Pro and dual core 2.6GHz. The 3GB memory barrier is probably a 32 bit vs. 64 bit thing. There are many posts in the forum about compatibility with different systems.

Maybe I will give the 64bit ashot. I don't have no legacy progams.

Re: Dilema
I have 8gb on my Win 7 64 bit system. It's worth it for 64 bit programs.
With that said, Win 7 appears to be the most compliant Windows program ever, as I haven't found anything that doesn't run on it.

Oh wow...if I would have known that the x64 was this fast, I would have switched along time ago...wow..

Re: Dilema
2 gigs (3 better) of ram are suficient for trueSpace. Its not that ram hungry app. Only if you use highres textures (like 2048x2048 or higher) its better to have more memory.
Best would be to have XP x64, which runs smooth. I use it. That will enable you to use all the ram.
Or you can have both OS (Xp and 7) and choose which one to boot up on the laptop startup. So you can have XP for tS and 7 for other apps.

Re: Dilema
I can add my experience. My computer was recently upgraded from one with win-xp pro 32 bit (dual core) with 3 gigs of ram to one with win7-64 professional with 6 gigs of ram, quad core
processor. I tried working on the model side of truespace with a file I downloaed from truespace web site, I think it was called paint with light (modelside) scene and I could not do anything with this scene when I had the xp computer (It really just locked up the computer). I was thinking after this upgrade to the win7-64 with 6 gis of ram, quad core processor, I could work on this file, but no such luck. It is absolutely no better or faster (might even be worse than than the win Xp computer). I can't comment on the workspace side as I don't use it enough to know. I don't know if the graphics card could be the problem but it might be effecting the speed. I dont think TS is a 64 bit program either.
Attahced below is a speed program tst on this computer. I tested it again with latest Passmark software and it gives a score of 1655.5

TS is a 32 bit app as far as I know...
The 3Gb limit is a limitation of XP memory addressing guaranteeing its obsolescence.

Re: Dilema
TS allow 2 gb ram max. The interest to have more than 2 gb ram is you can really allow these 2 gb ram to TS. OS, some softwares and driver use ram when you start the computer. 4 or 8 gb ram have no effect to the speed of TS if you have 2 gb for it. If you have more ram you can keep many soft in ram. that is the real interest of a 64 bits OS.
The minimum ram to keep 2gb for TS if it is the only software on ram is:
-3 gb for XP
-4 gb for Vista or win7 (last OS need more ram than XP)
The only problem for the future is if the next DirectX will be compatible or not with the TS DirectX version that become very old. This day TS will be really dead as many ms_Dos software a long time ago. anything is eternal with the computer.

Re: Dilema
Ok guys you might like this. It allows you to make a progam be aware of more memory. So far I have hear good things about it. Some users on the DAZ form used it and Bryce saw more than it's 2gb max. People were saying that Bryce performed much better.

The 3 GB switch is a microsoft function - you'll find more information at microsoft, follow the link:

Re: Dilema
The largest number that can be represented with 32 unsigned bits is around 4.2 billion. The switch noted might help some but more than 4Gb of memory requires larger than 32 bit numbers to store the larger memory addresses.

Re: Dilema
Well, this is not a tS-limit, but a common limitation of win32 systems. Windows needs memory address-space for itself and for extension-cards I/O-addresses, so it allocates usually only 2^31 bytes out of 2^32 bytes (4GB), that is 2GB to user mode programs. Herein you also can understand the explanation for the circumstance, that in win32 systems you only can use a maximum of around 3,5GB or less out of 4GB physically present RAM.
If tS would be designed to fulfill the requirements for taking advantage of more virtual address-space, you could extend this space with the 3GB-switch, assumed there is enough physical memory available. This would mean, moving the starting point of the win kernel to 3GB. But I never found any such information on tS and I think this only can be clarified by tS-developers.
Also it has to be considered, that cutting the kernel-address-space small, can rise other undesirable problems with drivers and so on, depending on your systems configuration.
So nevertheless, having at least 3Gigs in your machine under XP is a good advice, 'cause tS may have the full 2Gigs for itself. For Vista32 may be better 4Gigs.

Re: Dilema
Yes, good to have 4GB in a 32 bit system even if program X doesn't use it all.
I have 2GB and I seldom see total memory use go over 1GB even when using TS on large complex scenes. Maybe workspace is a memory hog. I don't use it so I don't know.

Re: Dilema
indeed..
Truespace crash if you rice over 2 gigs.. Vray etc..
32bits use up to 2 gigs (some say 3) i doubt..
If you have 4 gigs, windows seems to use 3 of 4 but you have more space for the OS.
Example.
my pc has 2 gigs. 4x512mb dual channel.
Xp32 use about 200 300mb, antivirus other stuff, rice about 500mb.
Truespace consume about 600mb and plus scene, textures etc.. so you will reach the 2 gigs rapidly..
If you have 3gigs on 32bit system you will have enough ram to reach the limit without more limitations due memory sharing with other applications.. that-s good..
I found in Workspace a workaround to duplicate the memory, in fact i can use the half of the memory for rendering leaving more space for Scene and polygons...
but is a bit complicated..not sure if i made the tutorial showing how but if someone is interested i-ll do for you guys..
Regards.
