Blender.

Post by Tommy »

This is my first blender image. Nothing to be exited over. My first task at a university course in learning Blender.
1.jpg
Do pinetrees with cones. Just a beginning.
This was done in Blender 2.49. I have now choosed to work with Blender 2.5. It feels more like TS.

nice work Tommy

@Froo, Blender 2.5x is getting there now, plus the tutorials are starting to catch up which makes life easier.
I love the uv tools, the sims and compositor, even the Blender renderer isn't to bad and plenty of external ones now work.
The Thea plugin is awesome and I think theres not much you can't export for rendering, I've done fluid sims and character animation, there's only the particle system stuff that doesn't export at the moment

This was the first simple test of how Blender works.

The third task was to explore arrays modifiers:
http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Doc:2 ... ects/Array

Proportinal editing:
http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Meta: ... ional_Edit

Lattice modifier:
http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Doc:2 ... rm/Lattice

This work is not ready yet but despite this I submit the work.

Hi Tommy, what university course is this? I read something about a school in Gävle. It's an open source course only, they use Blender and Gimp.
Just wondering if it is the same course? :)

BlenderGuru do some great tuts, I get the Wow Factor ebook a while ago, his realistic fire tut is also good, although he used an earlier version of 2.5 so some things were slightly different

Yes it's a course at Högskolan i Gävle (6hp på kvartsfart). I joined this course för learning the "gränsnitt" (I don't know the english word). I¨m not so impressed about the course. I have joined other courses wich have podcasts and interactive chats with the teachers and other students. Nothing of that here. Just links to tutiorals on the net and tasks to be done. I miss the interaction with the other students if there is anyone more.

But in the end the important thing is to be familiar with Blender.

Hi, I'm taking the same course at HiG and noticed your topic at the (terrible) forum there.

Did you solve the texturing? I haven't tried texturing beyond what's in the assignments or the generated ones that are built in.

Oh, is 2.5 good? The 2.4x UI really is odd and can be very confusing.

I'm working on animating a martial arts practitioner (a bit at least) for the project in that course. Wanted to focus on rigging and using the cloth simulator, so I made a "doll" with no joints in the mesh, just separate floating pieces :)
Built the rig according to this tutorial. It works well, although the joints have no constraints on how far they can turn.

What are your plans for the project?

Welcome to the forume. What do you mean with terrible???

I will be interesting what you come up with.

I don't now yet what to do for the last project. For the moment I am just trying to find out how Blender is working. For now I am rigging Gus the Gingerman. The course ends i June so there is some time to figure this out.

I have choosed to work with 2.5 because it a little more like Truespace. Truespace is a program I have worked with for a while and I like it. My thought was to learn the latest interface of Blender. But still hard to learn.

The trouble is that Microsoft bought it and stopped the development. This is a link to a most talented member of this community and what he has done with TS and some Blender to I think:

The course forum is so dead, and there's no image upload or anything... Perhaps there will be more activity when people start on their projects. I guess I'm early, but I am taking a few other courses that have exams in may-june so getting this done now seems sensible :)
Also it is fun!

I have looked around here and there is some really impressive stuff people have done! TrueSpace seems to have been a nice piece of software.

The Gus tutorials were good, but I never got the same gingerbready look as they did. It seemed kind of flat, even with textures for normals and everything. Texturing is hard :/

I agree with you Laserval. It seems as that the whole course are dead in some way. I have been part of other distance courses with a lot more discussions and a lot more interaction with the the members in the course.

I am on my third "Gus" from the start to get the rigging right. I will post the result when I get the rigging to work right.

I am working with making grass using Blender Gurus tutorial.

He is doing the turorial in 2.49 and this is my work with 2.54.
It is a rather different interface in 2.54 and its sometimes not easy to find the right way to do the grass in 2.54 with instructions from the interface of 2.49. So here are the translation:

Thanks for your comments. This was the last projekt in the course. Steine, I thought you could understand the world language of Swedish with lots of å ä and ö. Just kidding! The text in the end mean that the university course was good and that I would like to have one in nodes also. The black in the end is a misstake with rendering time.

This a video with a swedish sailor. One of my favorites of making fun of swedish language.

I'm sure when Tommy is as good with Blender as Rayman is with Sketchup it will only take a few minutes to do that. Rayman has demonstrated Sketchup's power for architectural things many times but it is primarily the user's knowledge and experience with a program that allows him to work quickly. Rayman can probably make that model in Blender in minutes too (though not as quickly as in Sketchup).

Very nice to have some comments about my work. I really enjoyed reading your comments.

Great work Rayman but I think the time is not relevant, it is what you learn that's the important thing. I think the important thing is to work so you fully understand the process. It takes time to do different settings and see the result. It took also some time because I'm rather new to Blender and had to look for some solutions on the webb. Regarding Blender there is lots and lots of tutorials on the web. The top of the brickwall is one example of getting it right and find a solution.

We humans are luckily differnt in our works. Some are fast and do things in a hurry. I am a human beeing that takes a long time to think about what I'm doing and have to think a lot to how do it. But when I have decided what to do it goes fast. When faster peoples comes with suggestions what to do I say I have to think about it and will return with my answer.

These different talents is good for us.

I heard a radio programme today about this. Spieces in nature who have this different minds is more prosperus than others.

No that not the problem its not the understanding of a program its how a program is built that makes it so fast .....its not myself.. ;)
In Sketcup you can pushpull the walls and those holes are arrayed components something you can only do in sketchup in no other program
you can even alter ALL holes at athe same time and adjust them.. when your finished you apply them..
Its like cleaning the floor with a broom rather then with a toothbrush....
I just said it because he said 3 hours and you can do that in 3 minutes ONLY in Sketchup and its free....

Rayman, so it would take you 3 hours to make that building in Blender? It would take some highly experienced Blender expert 3 hours? Tommy will never be able to make that building faster in Blender? I don't think so.

Certainly, some programs are better than others for various things. The posters demonstrated understanding of that our statements. You completely missed the point. I'm disappointed since I know you are an intelligent person.

I think we must end this discussion about time. The important thing is what you will produce. For some it would take 3 hours and for others it will take 3 minutes. The important thing is what you will enjoy when you are working no matter how long time it takes.

For me it took 3 hours to modelling the green house and it was fun to do it and in the same time learning Blender.

I'm in for Blender now because I believe Blender will last for a long time without Microsoft taking over it (like TS, sad to say). In the end I like TS more than Blender.

No Finis I didnt miss the point this time !
If you learn how to do it in Blender then over the time it will take you about half the time !
But so to speak in your language it takes 2 hours with a lawnmower and it takes a week with a handclipper.....
In Blender or any other normal and ordinary old modeler your JUST pushing and pulling verices.......
Those modelers normally dont differ much !
On the contrary Blender is far behind what modelling workflow is concerned even much further behind then Truespace 6
It doesnt even allow for good use of ngons something that is standard nowadays and was part of Truespace 4 or even earlier as i recall
Sketchup on the other hand was built for and by architects before it was purchased by google.....
Everything works as if your working with ngons but you are not ! On top of that you are instancing while you are modeling..
every part and every window is an instance... while you change and work on one instance you are working on all of them at once
In case of this model you just model 1 hole by simply drawing the rectangle onto the surface and pushing it inside.
You make an instance out of that and array that instance onto the whole surface and you are finished with the whole model....
When you alter one of those holes all the others change with the one you are working on..... in the end you make everything unique......
Modeling in a polygon modeler is a whole lot of difference experience and modeling in the least capable one and I see blender that way
is penalty square.....
Tommy said it took him 3 hours and I said that thats very long .. I said it because I know that modeling what he did here was not easy IN BLENDER !

Blender doesn't have a complete modelling kernell if you you look at what they said (correct me if I am wrong I think they said it "rewritten") that they rewritten everything from scratch, they don't... why because if it is rewritten from ground up they have just easily implement BMESh or ngon support what they did actually is "REORGANIZE" the old blender API if you you look at the development of BMESH porting it has many flaw or much of modelling operation in blender cannot port with the ngon support and a nightmare for the developer. Blender is built with traps or I say theres a specific rules or workflow to follow, its a step by step application it is a " you have to do this first, before this application", which means you cannot take other route to do things or else you get stuck or cannot utilize its other system, example of this is the modelling in blender even it's animation and rigging has a built in trap or I say if you want to utilize it completely thereis is a workflow to follow... rigging in blender is just fine (it's not fast as rigging it poser or daz but forgivable) but utilize it for its animation is where the trap is..when your in pose mode you must do it in pose mode.

this is just base from my experience.

I think the reason Rayman can work so fast in Sketchup is because he's Over-caffeinated.
Just kidding Rayman! :bananahi:

I have not used Sketchup yet. I am especially interested in Blender for the special effects available:
fluids, smoke, etc.

And, regarding blender, I am very impressed that the group (forgot the name) can put together teams
each year and generate short animated films the way they do... without Bmesh, without NGons, etc.
Interestingly enough, they have a lot of users, a lot of members on the various forums it seems. And
many training books, cds, dvds, etc. out there. Not bad for an application with 'older' technology.

Very interesting discussion about Blender!

The big issue is that I would not like to get in the same situation as with TS. Paying a lot of money and suddenly its all for free and without development.

Blender is an open source program which I think is good for the future. Why because it's a open source program and there is poeple who are working to make it better.

I will go to the end with this projekt. My wife is fond of gardening and she wants a green house in our garden and I am also excited of the idea.

We have found a maker of these houses and he wants a picture of how it should be. Therefore I am working with modelling a green house. Maybee in the next summer I can deliver a picture of the real house.

That would be very cool to see Tommy.
Are you going to grow vegetables and flowers?

It's mostly not for growing vegetables and flowers. We have to see how it will be in the end. Its more for the opportunity to be in the garden when its raining and in early spring and late autumns when the sun warms the green house.

The weather during summer in Sweden can be rather rainy so this is the solution to stay in the garden during bad weather..

We are inspired of the English greenhouses like this:
