Maintain front page

Post by froo »

The front page of this site is deader than a doornail. It has not changed in months. Maybe it doesn't matter but if we have a website it'd be kinda nice if the front page would be refreshed once in awhile. I know, I know... 'everbody's busy', myself included. But come on. There's even that text: 'we're trying to fix a problem on the main forum... '. Uhhh, that was solved months ago. Soooo.... might want to get that removed.
I would like to help maintain the front page if I can but I don't believe I have the access priveledges to that page. I tried navigating around there before but couldn't make updates so, I'm kinda stuck there.

So... Augusto! Prodigy! Buddy! Little help here? We ought to talk about this. :)

Regarding my comment about the front page text: "trying to fix a problem with forums":
If a web surfer sees that, day after day, they begin to wonder if this place has a pulse. It's kinda quiet anyway but, that text has gotta go.

I would love to help maintain it!!! I have some friends of mine who do weddesign and i know a little myself. I am addicted to the internet, and this forum, so I will put up art and make it look nice. I am not always punctual, but I'd contribute stuff when I can!

WHo has access to it? Who has the FTP? What is the process?

I was just thinking about the front page as well the other day, about keeping it alive.

Just keeping up with the MMC/SMCs would probably be enough and wouldn't take up to much time.

So come on Prodigy, let's get to work :bananatyping:

You guys didn't read my Challenge very well where I had mentioned a new Gallery...
I had planned on putting the winner on the Main page. The main page hasn't been updated because no one noticed or cared before now. Send me an email if you want to volunteer. I also will need someone to handle finances in two years too. So keep that in mind also.

I didn't really want to waste energy into something no one cared about. So it took you guys a YEAR to notice? So don't complain to me now...

No it didn't take a year Steinie.
This discussion came up some time before. I tried digging around into the code to see if I had
access but I didn't. At the time I believe the home page was in a folder that also contained information that should not be touched; I cannot remember the details. But it sounded like it would not be possible to get access to do what needed to be done. I also believe Tiles tried digging in there. Then I backed off in a fairly large way. :)

New galleries, contest mentions, people, hot topics, hot articles online, etc.. I like the sounds of it.

I was not here a year ago, so eh.... sorry bout that! :)

It looks like it is powered by Joomla. If we have access to the Cpanal, I am sure through Joomla things can get done quite easily. Is it Joomla? Or PHP?

Tiles assisted in fixing the log in problem with spammers. The Main welcoming page wasn't touched by Tiles at all. The Main Page was designed and maintained using Joomla. I believe only Prodigy and I have access to it. (I'm not sure about that one)

I stand corrected because Fro did mention back in October about putting the winner's entry from the SMC and MMC on the Main Page.

FYI
For this forum I have Administration rights but I had told Prodigy to water them down because I could do more harm then good. Prodigy has full Administration rights. There are others with rights to help maintain this forum. I have full control over our Web Hosting which will need to be taken over by a volunteer.
I am all for making this place better. So your questions are welcome.

I will need someone to take over the financial duties with a Host. You would be responsible with payment due (7/7/2014) by taking collections from
all of us. (the current users). You might chose to use another Web Hosting Service or your own. You would work closely with Prodigy maintaining the site, keeping
Spammers away etc. I do not plan on leaving but feel that the burden should be shared by everyone.
The first year Prodigy paid for everything but it was not a reliable service. We switched to HostGator and 22 people donated money to pay for one year. Then HostGator had a deal for three more years and a private donor paid for that. My records show that we have paid $454.04. This does not include what Prodigy pays for the Domain Name. "United3DArtists.com" (or the screw-up I made by buying "United3DArtist.com"...anyone want to buy this one from me.... :bananadevil: )
Maybe someone already has a Hosting Service and this site can be transferred over? We have lots of time but if it doesn't happen this forum will go dead. Something I don't want to happen.

Steinie, is that $454.04 for 3 years? If so that would work out to $151.35 per year (Not including the domain name cost). Thanks!

Froo,
No that would be 4 years. The 3 years was a special price if we paid in advance.
One year was $171.84 and the next 3 years special was 282.20

I believe that some folks in the past offered their web pages/sites as locations for news/contests/contest winners etc. So, perhaps that is an alternative solution to trying to update the U3DA front page. Or, just create a new page/site for that purpose. And have a link to the U3DA front page, and/or forums. What do you think?

Steinie, I don't have a set up for collecting cash via internet (eg Paypal) [at least not at this time] but I am willing to help with the site maintenance if you would like extra hands.

There seem to be community members interested in the work of keeping this site up and running so may I suggest that everyone who is willing or able to take things on become an "online" management committee. We can define the work and responsibilities and line up supporters and timelines.

In closing, Steinie and Prodigy, thank you so much for the work you have done to keep this community alive and kicking.

A lot of great ideas floating around, thanks for thinking of solutions. I want to be clear about what I am asking.
First Item:
The Front Page
The Front Page is controlled by Prodigy and myself. I am waiting for Prodigy to respond about letting other users help maintain the Front Page. He may have personal stuff there he doesn't want others to have access to. Let's wait and see what he thinks.

Second Item:
Someone being the Treasure for Web Hosting.
I am not asking anyone to come up with methods on how to raise money. I am asking someone to take over maintaining the Account and THEN figuring out ways to raise money. We have two years to do that so not a big rush.
I wanted you all to be aware that someone must be willing to take over by next year giving them time to figure out financials.

Third Item:
WebHost
Who you pick to Host U3DA will be up to you and Prodigy. If there is a cheaper place that have unlimited storage space, almost no down time etc then work that out with Prodigy. This site was started by him and for us. I really have no more say so then all of you. We are in this together.

Mine's not quite that cheap, 6.99 per month. ( W/ 1&1 )
Works out with additional annual domain renewal to about ~100 per year.
So yeah, there are better hosting deals out there.

I think that before you all start talking prices and comparing apples to oranges and so forth that you need to look at the post the Steinie made earlier today.
I good foundation must be laid before you get into prices.
Please look at Steinie's post as he made some very good points about this.
Then after those items have been covered you can go into prices.
Like Steinie said we have time yet, it does not have to happen right this moment.

if necesary, iam ready to help and get a webhosting in czech republic... space is almost infinite, if you dont eat most their servers, they dont limit you.

http://hosting.wedos.com/cs/webhosting.html"

you can use google translate, but its the 30 CZK / month. Its just about to order it and transfer the domain. Then the harder work - transfer all data and databases. But that can be handled too without bigger issues i think.

I already have a very good experience with this provider and my friend who recomended me it aswell. Everything works very well. Whole system, administration, connection stability, its all fine.

I think the idea is that the people forming this group will take on all the issues related to u3da including where the site is hosted etc. This group will go through the process of deciding the future path of u3da in total.

If there is a lack of interest/participation then we know where this is going.

If you are interested then join this little group. We have a workspace on huddle.

PM froo if you want to be set up on huddle.

That some things should not be public is true. That "the working group" needs to be entirely non-public is not. That is the kind of excuse politicians make: one thing is this way so all things are that way. There is no reason not to publish most things that any such group might consider regarding the forum. You don't have to be a congressman to get news about what they do ... do you?

Are Prodigy and Steinie active group members?

Given the people (Froo, V3rd3) who are in it I certainly expect nothing but good intentions and yet there is something about this that seems far from the community Prodigy saved from oblivion. I'll PM Froo and join the group so I can know what's happening ... and it looks like it might need a tribune.

Huddle is just a platform to get the job done, with tasks and timeframes and filesharing, just to make updates manageable with logs, schedules, filesharing, technical things, etc.

Anyone who wants to help out is more than welcome to join. Please do!

Actually there is no secrecy at all using Huddle. We use it so that this Forum doesn't get clogged with non 3D talk.
I want volunteers to figure out the future of this site and figure out which members will to move us forward.
Prodigy has always been the lead since he started this site. We do need more people involved so that no one person has the burden. I will be joining Huddle this weekend to discuss financials and go over all the details already discussed.

Here's a quick briefing:
Draise and v3rd3 have been discussing backing up the site: front page, other pages, and forums.
They also need ftp access in order to upload Joomla templates. They need the proper access rights in order to accomplish this. I did not request these sooner because I thought they already had the permissions and were learning how to accomplish their tasks. The first order of business is ensuring the site is backed up so we don't blow it out of the water. Once that is done, then we can proceed with new Joomla templates for an improved U3DA website. And certainly :) , we will mention what we will be adding, and request feedback, here on the forums. After all, this site is for all of us. :bananacheers:

Thanks Froo. That's is exactly what I meant. Just updates like that. Not a bunch of detail, not cluttering the forum with the whole procedure, not creating huge discussion threads here about all the details (folks, please do join the Huddle thing if you want to do that). Just a brief news article when there's something to tell and a little feedback from non-huddlers.

I have been very busy with real life issues taking up my time however I have been monitoring the discussions so far.
Here are my random thoughts.
I think an invite should go to Tiles also. He has a lot of knowledge about this site that can help us in the future.
A major backup of this site needs to be done.
All future changes may effect what we have today. This site has gone down a couple times over the years.
We are using an older platform here and if we update there is a strong chance the UI used today may be broken.
Someone please ask Prodigy for Administration rights so that we can backup this forum BEFORE any changes can take place. This one has to take place first! Please let me know who he allows.
Try to get involved with Huddle this weekend if possible.

I think an invite should go to Tiles also. He has a lot of knowledge about this site that can help us in the future.
Thanks for thinking about me Steinie. But i have even dropped a long year admin position a while ago because i simply miss the energy for such things at the moment. My health makes trouble. And to bring this page here to an up to date level needs lots of work and energy from what i can see. And it`s not done with bringing it up to date once. You need to maintain it in a long term too. I fear i am not the right guy for such a job anymore, sorry. Which doesn`t mean that you couldn`t ask when you have a question.

V3rd3 and Draise posted some very good comments on a mission statement / list of objectives. So, I am going to take a crack at consolidating their info into a Mission Statement.

Prodigy offered his feedback on the direction of the site today. I will add some line items to the mission statement based on his thoughts.

I added 3 line items to the mission statement.
I think we have enough feedback now; I can clean it up, break it out into sections, and start fleshing out more detailed tasks.

Adding more info to the mission statement based on more excellent feedback. I got tired though, so I had to quit; much more to fill in now.
I gotta tell ya; writing a mission statement is like cutting the grass with a pair of scissors. Very tedious, especially at first! But then you get other people with scissors all pitching in and you see you make more progress faster.

One of our illustrious team members plans to sketch - up some demo pages this weekend; hope it'll pan out!
Meanwhile I have to put my thinking cap on, for the next steps.

Cool so Draise uploaded some templates for review the other day. I'm going to do some sketches for a news page now that my computer is finally freakin up and running again. Hope it stays that way.

Draise constructed a model of the website structure. Very nice Draise!
I am checking out news pages of other sites for ideas of organization on that end.

Sidenote:
I had a setback due to a surprise expensive repair on an aging car, so I've been dealing with that. Man.
Since it has virtually no trade in value though, we're keeping it. If my wife feels uncomfortable driving it later, I'll drive it. It'll be a 'spare' eventually I guess. May as well get our money's worth since we had to get hammered by it.

Strange. I thought I posted more after June 26 2012. Either I was dreaming, it didn't work, or I just didn't do it.
In any event, we gotta get this thing moving. I have some stuff on my plate this weekend but we'll organize to get the new site out soon. I will add the discussions to my plate for this weekend.

Yes, It works now, but I noticed his thread no longer is in Important Announcements, but under General Discussions.

Will there be a thread for site updates on the new homepage "coming soon"?

The reason I moved it to "Gen. Disc." is the fact that "Important Announcements" postings come from Moderators and Admin. (after looking at the problem)
Something to discuss about offline.

Ok, sounds good. I have made updates to the site template with a colour scheme of trueSpace. So far it's looking great!

I have also added some things to it, changes here and there. Go to Huddle to review everything.

Someone asked me the other day where to look for the list of "Moderators" at United3DARtist.

Also I just noticed that TomG the Moderator of the Caligari Forum dropped by here this past June. I wish he said Hi!
I miss the old boy.

His last tweet ( @TheTomG ) was May 11.
Busy, I guess.
