Pointcube

Post by Galane »

I think I did this wayyyy back in trueSpace 2.x. Took me forever to get the cube standing perfectly on one point. Then I copied and rotated it a bunch of times and booleaned them together.

Zip contains the single cube and the other with 3074 vertices and 2976 faces. This object was a real stress test when all I had to work with was a 486SX 33! :)

Put a bunch of them in a scene and render them as glass, might stress a modern box a little. The single cube 'en pointe' might come in handy should you ever need such a thing. I did it because I had an idea for something, but whatever it was got lost in the fiddling around. ;)

WTF 800+, that's impossible I think... Nice cube, I'm wondering how you create it! :)

I took a cube and rotated it using a highly calibrated Mark 1 Eyeball. Then I selected the top and bottom vertexes and wrote down their positions. Did some math and entered some numbers a couple of times in the object properties panel until the X and Y were both zero top and bottom.

Then I normalized the rotation of the axes and SAVED IT.

Next, IIRC, I copied and rotated 45 degrees a couple times, boolean joined all those, copied and rotated 22.5 degrees and joined and did it again for at 11.25. Could've set the grid to 11.25 degrees and rotated and joined one at a time with keep drill checked.

I was very much surprised that trueSpace 2.1a did not crash or say it couldn't do the join once while I made that object.

One thing I found a use for with this object is making a pleated lampshade. Chop one end off a bit above its rim then use a copy, lowered a bit to make a corrugated cone. Cut a hole through the middle and you have a lampshade.
