Are there problems with the COB format?

Post by BNG »

I can't seem to convert COB/SCN models to XSI properly. I use 3dex to convert COB to XSI format, but they never seem to convert well at all. 3dex supports both the binary and text COB format, but when I load converted XSI files the model is always distorted and quite horrble looking.

Are there some things I can try to fix this issue? First when I build the model it needs to be pointed upword in the workspace with the XYZ axises set to 0 0 0. Then I export them as COB. I've tried both binary and text with the same result. In 3dex I convert them to XSI and they look just fine with no obvious visual issues, but when I load them in my video game, Battlezone II the models are all wrong looking and some parts of the original model are not even there. Could 3dex be the problem or should I suspect my video game engine as causing the issue? I also export X models from TS to 3dex and convert those to XSI without any problems at all. I could use some feedback as I love modeling with TS and can't imagine not using it.

PS: My 3dex version 1.5.5. is rather old due to the older XSI version 1 required for BZ II models. Could it be that the COB version TS 6.6 uses has changed significantly from the version support by this version of 3dex? I also have TS version 3.2 and TS version 1 would these be a better choice to model with due to the age of my 3dex version. Thanks BNG.

I dont have direct experience with either 3dex, XSI or battlezone .... but why dont you try to convert directly do xsi via some 3rd format. I mean to save it in obj or 3ds or another (maybe collada), which xsi can read and load it up to xsi, then save it for the game.

I could not tell you exactly what the problem is but one thing to consider is the orientation of the axes x,y,z... is it possible that your model components have been rotated out of position? In TS the vertical dimension is the z plane but in other packages it could be y.

Another point to ponder is that exporters for older, or defunct like cob, file formats were written some time ago and may not have included all possible geometry information.

You don't have to give up TS as your modelling tool of choice, you just need to find the right workflow to accomplish the next step.

If .x from workspace exporter gets all that you want then stick with it.
