Howdy!
Just uploaded another quick test: Further experimentation with this approach in 3D.
Instead of using a single applied as an alpha-mapped texture, I applied several frames as an animated texture.
What do you guys think? As said on the blog, I'm thinking of tweaking the framerates a bit.

It is a good way to keep your style. you can use different framerate for the scene(ex: 25 or 30) and the animated texture (2 or 3 time less than the 3d object). the animated texture need to have the same framerate than the setting of the scene for the render to match but you can repeat (2 or 3 time) each image to create the video for the texture.
a jitter 2d texture and a fluid movment of a 3d object can create an interesting contrast to show how both world can work together.
