I haven't seen the new TRON movie but surely it has tons of computer generated special effects.

Saw it.

Special Effects: From the look, style, design to quality to integration with live actors it is all great.

Story/plot: Some good, some bad, mostly ok but entertaining. Critics had given it thumbs down for story but I didn't think it was that bad. It had a few "politically correct" elements I didn't care for but that is to be expected from a Disney movie. A good dose of nostalgia with the old set or a replica of it and arcade video games. There is a new element/concept/character that is both a kind of obvious or necessary thing and a good idea. Otherwise, much of it seems poorly thought out and many opportunities were missed. "User power" plays a significant role but is strangely missing from much of the movie.

Acting: Better than I thought it would be.

3D: I haven't seen a 3D movie in a long time. This one has some parts in 2D and some in 3D. The idea or the way they used that was good but I didn't see that 3D really added anything to the movie except $2 for glasses. Well, 3D hot babes in skin tight outfits are better than 2D ones. Also there was some 3D smoke that was interesting. Tron's 3D looked natural compared to some previews that looked exaggerated.

It was way too loud but that is the theater's fault.

So I'd say as a movie it is worth watching on TV. The special effects might merit seeing it at the theater.

I agree with you Finis. I went to see this movie with my son. I have seen the first one then it was on the cinema at the beginning of the 80:ies. The 3-d experiance where not so good and the plot where mediocre, I have to remove my glasses a couple of times during the movie to se if it really was in 3-D.

I've also seen the movie now and I agree with you guys. I also took some time to watch the original, somehow I liked that one a lot better.

Minor Spoiler: They used 2D for the real world and 3D for the grid world.

That reminded me of Brainstorm. In that movie experimental technology could record the sensory input of one person and play it back for another. So the viewer would experience full sensory immersion in something that someone else did. It was well thought out and many possibilities were intelligently explored.

Anyway, what TRON reminded me of is that Brainstorm did a similar trick for real world vs. playback world. They used a square part of the screen for the real world and went full screen for the playbacks. I read that they had considered using a large format film like Omnimax (Showscan I think) for the playback and regular for the real world scenes but didn't since very few theaters could have shown it back then.

I thought the story sucked too. Tron the first was much better.
