I have a basic visual for this. Will flow with the modeling and see how it finally shapes up.

Here's the beginning
The colors denote the various parts, most of which will be booleaned together. They each started as a box (except for the ball joint), and then I added edges as I went along.

Re: MMC Nov 09 _Mobile Assault Spider
Thanx Steinie! Glad to be trying this again.
The first few sketches gave me the 'crab eyes' idea; the rest I am flowing with the form. Nothing set in stone, except maybe the four legs.
Thank you Karthogen! Yes, I too am interested to see how this plays out. Didn't start with a template so this can be freeform modeling again. No agenda, just a time limit

Re: MMC Nov 09 _Mobile Assault Spider
I would not make the legs have a 90 degree bend instead I would suggest raising
the angle so that they look like they are supporting weight. I notice your drawing already
shows this but not your model....yet.
I would also assume you are going to add sds to your model? So get some edge loops on those
eyes.
Keep it going I want MORE!

Re: MMC Nov 09 _Mobile Assault Spider
Yup, it's a all comin'. Right now I'm just taking boxes and tubes, putting them together to come up with basic form. I don't like the look/feel of the rear, but it is functional (ammo storage and/or troop carrier; will see). Presently struggling with a pragmatic vs sexy look, for a heavily armed military vehicle.
Been also using SDS to check for smoothness of form. Best is two layers, but that makes too many polys for my taste.
I use the MMC's to test out new procedures/workflow and the like. For example, the first pic, I used three different ways of modeling to create the same shape. They each have their strengths. One day I'll time it to see what is the time saved with each.
These challenges have helped me immensely through the years advance my art. I see many new names nowadays. Very cool. Hope more see the value of entering these things.

Re: MMC Nov 09 _Mobile Assault Spider
Small update
It has lasers, machine guns, can fire a variety of missiles depending on type of target, and can carry a complement of 6-8 soldiers. What the Spider can't destroy, the grunts will cleanse. The rectangles are roughly equivalent to a 6 ft human. The dome on top houses sensors, and the machine guns are helmet controlled, like our present Apache helicopter.
Now have to figure out the feet.
Oh, did I mention it has a kick-ass stereo, and a cooler? (There ain't nothin' like a cold beer after a good firefight) Was thinkin' of you Tahnoak

There ya go...that could be awesome animation! Have it shoot the laser, then a bunc of drunk soldiers roll out the back laughing about blowing up the generals car.

Re: MMC Nov 09 _Mobile Assault Spider
Basically, the tan body was created using 'Dynamic Sweep' and edges then adjusted as I went along. Everything else started as a box or cylinder shape and then molded to fit and added on.
Sadly, an ongoing problem is that tS loses edges I've placed, so I have to keep going back and redoing what I've already finished. Wish someone could find an answer to that.
Because of time restraints, I have to simplify the mechanics of the legs (their too close to each other for starters). Also, the pose I will end up with will not show the rear so won't build that up for now (but it has seating for eight in the back. The bulbous rear section houses the ammo, and the men would sit outside like in a half-track). I could have saved time by not redoing the edges (they were sloppy), but I like to have all my models viable for animation so redid them.
Now have to figure out how to create the textures in no time flat.
Oh yeah, there's the environment too.

Great work. I like the real angular structure you have going on here. Can't wait to see this baby all textured up.

I like it. The parts all fit together with good proportions. You have a point about the legs close together but for a still picture it won't mater. Good feet. They give it an all terrain look since the would be good for sand.

Re: MMC Nov 09 _Mobile Assault Spider
Thank you all for the comments.
My son suggested a sandy/desert backdrop also Finis, so was going with that. Alas, there's no way I could finish this in time. Kept crashing, so tried to simply paint the background, but now that I am certain I can't finish in time (almost 3 am here, lost the textures Again, and I am pooped), will try to finish this by creating the background in tS proper, hopefully tomorrow.

Re: MMC Nov 09 _Mobile Assault Spider
Thank you Steinie. I posted what I could as a final pic.
The constant crashing, and then losing the textures over and over again has just worn me out. I'm not willing to blame my computer anymore; when asked to do anything within tS, it zips through it no problem. It's just tS.
The design of this craft was more 'create as you go', something I rarely like to do, (There's nothing like having an actual map) because it leads to technical design flaws for one. My intention originally was to try different techniques for actual modeling, but realizing that time is of the essence, I resorted to straight box modeling after the cockpit. At first I had created as a tracked vehicle but wanted to try out the legs. Now I have a better idea of the advantages and disadvantages of each design.
