ANIMATION CONTEST 2010 / 02

Post by LeonRegis »

ANIMATION CONTEST 2010 / 02

This contest will be totally different! Will be liberal, I'll try to maximize the fun and the entries, at the end of the post I'll explain each change and action I made.

Theme: Completely free, do whatever you want.

Start: now
End: 27 MARCH 2010 -> EXTENDED! 27 APRIL -> EXTENDED! 27 of MAY. All animations which are submitted until the end of this day are in the contest, before 23:59 in your country. I'll check it on http://www.poodwaddle.com/clocks2.htm" Kidding...

THESE ARE THE RULES (JUST) FOR THIS CONTEST:
- No software restriction for modeling, animating, post processing, rigging, texturing, etc.
- WIP is required even for small and fast animations! If you don't do a WIP at least explain in your entry post how do you did and where did you collect things as models and textures, also which software did you used.
- Any model, ie, you can download models... but only those free and also you need to explain in your WIP in which site are you collecting the models
- Motion or Facial capturing is allowed
- No restriction in length but it should be a resolution above 320x240
- upload your final animation onto youtube and present it here OR upload it anywhere else in a "normal usable" codec like XVID/DIVX or MP4 so that anybody is able to see it
- You can post any unpublished animation, I mean by it that... you can post a animation you didn't published yet, or a animation that you heavily modified and didn't published yet, but you need to post the WIP of it, if you don't have it then you can't put it here. Ex: Marcel can entry with B.O.T 4. Please guys respect this rule, post only if you didn't published it really and if you have a WIP.

------------------------------------------------------------

Explaining the decisions:
Theme: Completely free, do whatever you want.
It will you be free to do whatever you want, but maybe some will not join due to the lack of ideas but please GET AN IDEA
- No software restriction for modeling, animating, post processing, rigging, texturing, etc.
Some guys thinks is better to use some other softwares they are good at and using only truespace would make the results worst... what I want to see is beautiful animations and not beautiful animations created in Truespace even if I prefer the second. The only con of it is that good softwares as Vue, 3D max and Maya that many couldn't afford would be used and since they are better than tS in animation it would make it a bit unfair.
- WIP is required even for small and fast animations! If you don't do a WIP at least explain in your entry post how do you did and where did you collect things as models and textures, also which software did you used.
First because we need it to be able to do another thing that is be able to use any software and post unpublished animations... but also because it's better to all know about it and also I think nobody wants to keep secret of your animation, well, now if you want, you can't anymore. :)
- Any model, ie, you can download models... but only those free and also you need to explain in your WIP in which site are you collecting the models
- Motion or Facial capturing is allowed
- No restriction in length but it should be a resolution above 320x240
- upload your final animation onto youtube and present it here OR upload it anywhere else in a "normal usable" codec like XVID/DIVX or MP4 so that anybody is able to see it
Normal decisions on Animations contests.
This one would attract guys that are already engaged in an animation and don't want to start another just for the contest. Also is good for continuous projects where you keep going with the animation. I'm sure that because of it we will see many other entries. I know maybe it's a bit unfair with who is just joining it now, but we can extend it for one more month (I'll do a poll 5 days before the end of the contest to see if anyone wants to extend). Also use and abuse of the possibility of download models, this would help if you want to do a super production animation.

I hope to see many enters and also that you have lots of fun doing it!
Please be a fair player and obey the rules to have a fair competition, they are there just for it and nothing else, I know that are a lot of ways to cheat in this competition because is by far too liberal but I trust in this community because is small and cool, ;)

Thanks and let's go! :superbanana:

PS: Concerned with some point, didn't like a action? Post here and I'll see what I can do. Also be free to discuss anything related to the contest here, in this topic.

Really most awesome in how you set the rules on this one. Main reason is most everyone, well maybe allot of folks have animations just sitting around, some almost done or even close that can be brought out of the closet. I know I do, maybe time to air them out a little.

Please open up a comment thread. Thanks!

Glad you liked it Noko, hope to see some entries from you or a great entry alone.

We don't need comment thread in animations contests... since they will be upload in youtube you just need to put the link in the poll thread and voilà.

I have two animations at least I should be able to share, one is virtually complete and the other about 70% depending how much more I want to add to it. I hope to see allot of folks bring out stuff they tuck away in the past. In any case this can really be fun for those who join in. Maybe call it the dusty old never seen animations contest, love to see some tS 3.1 never seen clips and maybe even younger. Of course not limited to tS or the past neither so dusty old may not apply.

Good to know Noko, I saw the animation in your WIP and seems pretty good already.

Yeah, would be cool see really old animations poping up, but also who don't have any animation create one.

I'll try to post a updated version of the Mission to mars, and now I'll put to render 10 days before the deadline, then I think I'll have enough time to a good render.

YEAH, now thats the way to run an animation contest.
This may seem strange as I stink at doing space animation and have never been good at them.
After my animation for the previous contest of the two space ships fighting I was contacted by a band that is currently on tour to do a video for one of their songs. Even more strange is they wanted a space type animation for their song.
So as I am currently working on this I will be using this animation for the contest.
You can hear some of the music the band does by going to http://www.fervorband.com
Thanks Leon, you ROCK...

Well I like how this Challenge will be open to all. To me it will not matter since
trueSpace will be my weapon of choice. (Ok I don't have any other weapons... )
I have two ideas which will be attempted for this Challenge. They may or may not be completed
in time but Golly Gee Willikers I'll give it my best effort boss...darn tootin' I will:lol:

p.s. Leonregis, why not continue your Space launch with this Challenge?
p.p.s. Jeff Roig's inclusion of the Rock video into your contest will be fantastic. :bananaguitar:
p.p.s.s. Noko in any contest will be awesome.
Anyone else want to show us what your made of? I kick sand in your face! :bananadevil:

Jeff: Thanks, go ROCKZ!

RAYMAN: Great! I never saw an animation from you.

Steinie: Thanks, also I want to see with what you will come up. Yep, I'll try to continue the Mars mission, but maybe I lose the interest on the spacial theme... but I'll give a try.

Why wait to post a WIP when I can do it now and be ahead of the game.
There are certain things in this video that I am allowed to release and other pieces that due to a confidental agreement I signed I am not allowed to release.
Here are specific details I can release.
Modeling software used:
TrueSpace 4.3
Argile

Animation Software Used:
Vue 7
Poser 8

Texture and Bump Maps:
Photoshop 7

Song by Fervor:
The Wake

Here is what I am not allowed to display until the project is complete.
Any piece or part of the video that shows any action that would give the video away.
I can not tell any part of the story line to this.

Here is what I can display and will.
Non textured models (wireframe only)
One city scene approved by the band that is textured.

Total Length: 3:29
Attachments
Hawk.jpg
Globe1.jpg
City 1 textured and rendered in Vue7.

One more addition to this WIP.
All models from the space ship to the city scenes are 100% of my own creation/design and have been done in TrueSpace 4.3 and minor work done in Argile.
All textures applied to the buildings and the space ship(s) have been 100% created by me in PhotoShop7.
Special effects that are to be used will be created in ParticleIllusion and are custom, meaning that all alpha maps are created by me in PhotoShop7.
I have alot of work to go and not much time to do it in, creating a realistic animated video takes alot more work that I expected, I am even consulting with a professional photographer for correct angles and light.
Ask question if you would like and I will respond to the best of what I am allowed to say.
See you all very soon in the contest..

P.S. Leon you better finish the space scene, dont start something unless you plan to finish it.
P.S.S. Steinie I want to see some great works from you, Yo Adrian you can do it.
Astalavista baby.....

The animation contest has been extended due to the MMC... I don't want to you guys need to choose which contest enter. Also I think Animation Contests needs to be bimonthly and not monthly... And in some cases with one more month extension. ACs are different from MMCs... they need more time or then they will look not that good.

I advise next winners to set ACs bimonthly... I'll set a poll near the end to see if someone wants to extend it.

Hope you understand

PS: Please enter the contest now, to then don't have any problems with the deadline.

I agree with you, the animations take longer to produce.
Let me know when the poll is up and I will vote in favor of extending it.

Sorry... I wrote it too confusing!

The Contest HAS been extended (we can go back if anyone is oppose to it). So the poll I mentioned is just for ANOTHER extension (making this contest a 3 month contest), and because a 3 month contest is something too big I'll do a poll to see if most of guys want a exchange.

Sorry for act as dictator but I did it just to speed the process and also it might help some undecided guys to enter. Again, if anyone didn't like it... just let me know (by PM, if want...) and I'll see what I can do.

Thanks

I finish B.O.T. 4 this week. Maybe i can post it for this contest (contest or not, i will post the part 4 on my youtube channel this month). i need to add some info on my WIP to show some work and i start a part 5. After a winter of destruction, I'm enjoying the spring to rebuild that centibots destroyed. This should be the last part before making the final cut which will include news scenes (essential to really understand the story) and music.

Thanks Steinie,
I really appreciate it, I tried to mix a combo of Space which still to this day I dont like doing and Poser characters, "Astonauts and Dolphins". Every part of it was rendered in Vue 7. The three astrnauts if you look close enough actually have the faces of the three band members on each helmet lense.

I reduced the size on youtube at 640x360. The size for the final movie will be 1280x720.
I used trueSpace 7.6 model side and lightwork for the render. the centibots (robots for the new members) are textured with the caligari metal shader. Other type of old metal are simple phong shader with photo to map the surface. not really a complex work. For the lighting i used hdri for some scenes or/and basic lighting (directional and infinite). For the smoke and special effect i used the soft Particules illusion 3. then i used premiere 6.0 to edit the movie and add the sound. The movie is converted to h264 with total video converter 3.1

Here is my second submission for the animation contest.
This is done for the Sesame street contest going on at ANIBOOM.
The majority of this was done in VUE while I used Poser for the sports announcer and I used ParticleIllusion for the smoke on the opening screen. The race car model was downloaded from Renderosity and then modified for this. The sports announcer is original as well as the stands and track. The flag was designed in TS and exported as an OBJ and used in VUE.
I think this covers it.

Take a moment to vote for me at the Aniboom Sesame Street contest.

That's really sad. I'm also on problems, I just don't have any time to produce my animation. So I'm really sorry guys, I'm bad with myself too.

I'll be creating a poll for extend this contest, so you might have a chance Rotcorp. But then this contest will have 3 months... Also we hadn't many enters, thanks to our restless Jeff and Marcel! ;)

Animation need a lot of time but the activity of the forum is very slow. About my project B.O.T., i begin the part 5 who will be the most important part. Also i improved many old scenes from the first part since a few months. The result is much better than what I posted on youtube with more movement and action. I would start a wip to show the update hoping it will have more activity here. it's not very motivating to spend time to make a wip in these conditions.

Post by Rotcorp »

I don't exactly have a wip, but you did say that we could explain how we did the animation. I'll try to keep it brief.

Most of the animation uses TS 6.6 and native bones, though quite a few things used motion studio (lizard, blue pig guy). I would render each layer (background, character, forground) seperately and composite them together in After Effects. The shadows under the characters are usually the original TGA of the character scaled and applied with alpha silhouette transfer mode.
Lip sync took a while to work out. I tried facial animator... used a stock head, got it to talk, then animated my characters to sync up tot hat. This method was hit and miss. What ended up working was to open up the dialogue file in Adobe Premiere, open my scene in Truespace, and use Premiere to find dialogue phonemes, then go into truespace, find the corresponding frame number and change the facial expression to match the sound using the deformation tool. I started using this method at the line "Why not, it's worked so well thus far" spoken by the "little acorn guy". You can tell the difference.

Most of the animation doesn't need an explaination as it's pretty straight forward, but if anyone is curious about how anthing was done I'll gladly explain.
...hope this follows what you intended as an explaination.
Here's my entry...if there's still time.

Here is a short animation that is going to actually be part of a longer animation when finished.
The dragon model, the original base model was from 3D Universe, I took the raw model (OBJ) and changed alot of features.
I used Argile and TS 4.3 to change the model for my use. The model was then imported into Poser where I created a custom set of bones. The Viking guy is an orginal character design done in TS and Argile then imported into Poser. The main background you see was done in VUE7 and saved as a TGA and then painted onto a one sided plane. The trees and weeds you see in the foreground were created using Tree Generator and exported as a OBJ into Poser where they were then sized and textured. Same applies for the rock, the grass is the ground plane re-textured using a grass texture.

The guy being blasted by the fire-balled pork & bean back blaster (dragon fart)
would look better if he doubled over first, then sent backwards.

I took a breather to enjoy the great outdoors. My intention is to return
after the summer with a vengeance! (I too eat fire-ball back blaster
pork and beans...)

I will respond to personal emails but with a drunken slur... :bananacheers:

I also do a little break.

But my break is to pause the TSX developement and do some modelling and rendering stuff for a while. I also organize and update all my websites and do family stuff with my wife and the kids.

I remember Shared Space Community Was new and active. Without future it seems dead now. This has allowed to maintain the activity but it was obvious that it will not endure for long. maybe this is what happens with animation.
many people like to test new products. Truespace not evolve, and interest decrease. I think this kind of thread will soon be definitely dead. Without new creation, there is less wip, less post and those who really create go somewhere else. where they feel that people are interested in what they do. and I do not see a lot of animation done with other software to stop this fall in the forum. The last users of TS will be artists, not geek. They gives more importance to ideas and less on tools.

Its good to get away and develop new ideas for future projects. Me getting out on the Dirt bike in the woods has provided all kinds of new ideas and got my mind wondering about something I have been wanting to do. Who knows maybe I will mount the video cam on the bike to get some footage and use it or maybe I will just take the cam with me to get some good pics, only time will tell but either way it will be fun.
Steinie come on down and take a ride, I have two bikes and a four wheeler you can relax and enjoy some of the nature, we caught a 6 lb 27inch large mouth bass yesterday and there are plenty more in the pond.

One of the things I see is more of us are working on projects as well as enjoying our summer. A few of the regular posters are more often lurking.

I think we all have continued interest in TS as part of our package but lacking a clear direction on the new features front we have to prepare to add other tools to the kit.

Let's not get too disheartened because we have work to do.

Marcel thats a question of time and ones personal life rather then software.....basicaly also a question of priorities. In an artists life there are cycles when the people do more and some when they do less . Its not something for good its just a question of the moment.

Yes, we all have moments that require us to stop. But not at the same time and there were always people active. it is clear that the activity decreases when we look at the average. Is there any other extension for the ANIMATION CONTEST EXTENDED POLL? Frankly, it discourages from participating the next time.

Sorry I didn't understood marcel... can you explain it again?

I should do the poll to choose the winner, but I don't have 15 min that would be the time it would take to set it.

Marcel,
I agree with you as it is very discouraging.
We should of already voted on the animation and been onto the next contest.
Note: Maybe next time we should not extend the contest, it should be a set time length and leave it at that.

No problem. Just i said there is not enought people with time to do animation here. Extension or not, the result is the same. it's like racing: when we are many, we are motivated to win. It is a pity that nobody have time to participate here. I know there is nothing to win, just happy to share. I hope this is not the reason for this disinterest.

We need to put an end to this animation contest so we can move onto a new one.
Why should we have to wait for someone to post a poll, can someone else take control on this one so we can move forward.
I enjoy doing the contest for the pure enjoyment of sharing my work with others here.
