Here is my WIP thread... don't have anything to post yet but here is the idea...

Bicycle concept:
two extra large wheels next to each other, slightly inclined towards each other at the top with rider sitting "inside" the wheels to peddle with both hands and feet... almost like the monocycle motorbike with the guy sitting inside the wheel rim...

Scene setting:
desert scape with rolling rock balls, petrified trees, fissures and sink holes, sand sharks and Impaler avions (from my very first SMC entry in August 2008)

Not sure if the bicycles will have the Mad Max theme with weapons loaded on it; old arms though, like swords, axes, maces, pikes etc... modern weaponry would be too heavy for man powered vehicles like bikes...

The bicycle frame is basically the wheel rim duplicated and resized...

I wanted it to be a partial torus shape so I cut out a square...

For the seat, I took one of the cut frames and resized it at an angle to for a bucket shape for the spine...

Next is the gear set for the feet peddles...

Next is the peddles, I use a rectangle with the sides beveled, if you melt it with subdivision surfacing, it becomes smooth cylinders but won't slow down your navigation with high poly models...

Used an old figure model for a rider and added handle peddles as well for extra power and speed...

Still need to add the drive gear at the top of the frame cage to link to the wheels...

Added some frame struts to attach the wheel hub semi-torus to as well as drive gears at the top...

The yellow highlighted parts are the drive wheel that goes around the driver and the frame, driven by the peddle sets, the drive wheel connects to the drive gears which turns the wheels...

Just about done with the bicycle design, will give each bicycle its own paint job to make them look different, then I'll start with a scene setting...

Great work theuns.

I like the concept and think your renders are pretty terrific too. I love the way you always insert characters into your images. Despite the fact they are very low poly, they really do add a surprising amount of impact.

Amazing Theuns! The renders, counting that was done in lightworks, are just amazing! The bike concept too, sorry that I cannot enter this one (creative block). I agree with BB and Tahnoak (and I think that Tahnoak means BB and not Steinie

I think this might be the last cycle design, unless I have time for a quad bike ;)

...the drive peddles for the trike works a little different than the normal peddles used by all the other bikes, it works more like a crank axle...

What to say??? Outstanding. I think I have no chance with you in this challenge.

In my early days in school when there were a sports meeting I realised I haven't a chance so my aim were to be the last in the competition. It was my way to show of. I feel in some way I got the same wiew in this challenge.

But I will be struggling with my entry. Maybee I will be second or the third or the fourth or......

This is how I felt as well before my first try... and guess what... I WON!

You never know until you try and the more you try the better you get...

Besides... I can't win this one because I am hosting ;) I might enter it to see how it goes in the voting but I won't be able to win ;) Just a personal choice to give others a chance to host the next challenge...

started with the terrain now... the forests are petrified tree stumps as hard as stone, might put a giant Stone mushroom in the background as well...

the problem with the conventional bicycle D is that you can not use the weight of your body to push the pedals on a climb.

true, but with such a low profile, wind resistance will be a lot less than the other designs and with the low weight futuristic materials, you won't need as much powers as todays bicycles...

here is the Umpire Flyer, watching over the participants and providing protection, and they WILL need it in this seen, you'll see [hint: remember the desert boat I did a while ago?]

I choose the tandem bike to be the victim of the desert shark... one of the riders gets flung out of the bike and bits break off...

here is the first full scene render... still want to play with a bit of fog to hide the background a little... perhaps add some lense flares to the lasers of the Umpire Flyers attacking the desert shark...

here is a newer version... added some color to the bike paint, replaced the background rocks with sand dunes... added another bike to the foreground and background... rearranged some static scene objects ... gave the desert shark new colors, an extra ventral fin and sharper nose (old one looked like a whale) ... redid the sand spout where the shark breached...

Cool, I don't know why but those light colors make me feel like that it's toys (Light blue and green) but others colors makes the scene more vivid!

thanks leon...

its like todays bicycle races with all the bright colors of the sponsors that the riders wear, along with color paint and stickers on their bikes (just like grand prix and all other motor sports too)... ;)

wanted to break the blandness of the desert colors and create some contrasts that would keep the focus on the bikes and their riders so they don't get lost in the scenery... same reason I changed the sharks color, even though in terms of nature, it would make sense to have a brown shark to camouflage with the sand, I choose to use more traditional shark colors to make it stand out and draw the focus onto it... that is also why I replaced the background rocks with sand dunes because the rocks were too prominent and drew away the focus from the objects in the foreground... wanted to add some do some stencils on the bikes (did one on the yellow bike in the foreground) but don't have cool looking pics to use as stencil and don't have time to go hunting yet...
