Understanding the privs.xls file; and, timer notes

Post by froo »

speaking of timers, I found an item in the server doc which may
help with animated objects in OurSpace.

The item is:

SyncRate

Sync rate - Number of times per second when changes of the Shared Space are checked. Use lower values for spaces that are not so important for real-time and use higher values for spaces you want to synchronize more precisely

So that may help with, for example, animated fans, so they don't look so clunky and stuttery when they rotate.

On another note, I am experimenting with the privs.xls file. Pretty straightforward.
I logged in as developer, and could add, edit, and delete objects.
I then logged in as visitor, who can only 'observe', according to the privs.xls file, and
could not delete or edit the object.

So makin progress there.

Can the objects in the scene have privileges? So that a user can visit a scene
and create/modify new objects but cannot alter existing objects.
Wasn't that how Thursday Night environments were setup?

Hi Steinie.
Yes, that is possible.
I just tested that; I created an account called Steinie,
and configured the user Steinie to have these permissions:

visitor; developer

then, in the Moderator panel, when logged in as froo (with admin priveleges),
I selected a cube, and set the 'Access' permissions to: uberuser
This means: Any user with the uberuser key as part of their permissions can edit / delete that object.
No one else can.

Then, logged out, then back in as Steinie.

As Steinie, I tried deleting and moving the object, but it did not delete, and stayed in place.
The reason is, Steinie has the keys: visitor; developer (which do not have edit permissions for the object)
but not: uberuser (which has edit permissions for the object)

Then, as Steinie, I added another cube and moved it around successfully, since that new object does not have
any special priveleges assigned.

So makin progress. Excellent question Steinie. :D

Next test maybe save the scene file as user Steinie, and see if you can mess with the objects once you are offline in that scene where no trueServe controls exist.

Glad you are testing this stuff! :bananacheers:
