Substance Painter and trueSpace

Post by Steinie »

I have a few questions and your opinions and insight would be welcome.
Would Substance Painter be a good fit with trueSpace and vRay? Substance Painter has a layer system and I'm not sure vRay can handle this.
FBX seems to be the format used in Substance Painter because of its layer system I assume. If Layers is not utilized in trueSpace/vray would baking the texture be an alternative?
I would like to use Clintonman's FBX importer/exporter, any ideas about what my ideal workflow would be?
Maybe not use VRay but use the other rendering engines in trueSpace?

Here is more information I found about Substance Painter that might effect my use.

Someone asked this question:

"I do love this program but have a question: is there any future development for being able to save texture formats outside of gaming use? I do a lot of mixed projects in high res modeling that are not particularly well suited to game engines (Iray and Luxrender, etc) and the maps that Substance generates are a tangled mess for those renderers. Substance produces outstanding textures and its so easy to use that I prefer it to many modeling program-specific texturing methods."

Answer:
"Yes, we are working on new options to export to offline renderers such as vray etc. The maps that Painter currently generates are designed for PBR shaders related more to game engines. We will expand this in the future as well to include non PBR shaders."

For me (with Clintons FBX exporter) using trueSpace and Substance Painter works quite well. Importing tS models into Substance Painter is about as easy as exporting to any other program from trueSpace. If you have a fully unwrapped model that is. Anything you paint in Substance Painter can be re-calculated applied to entirely new UVs with the click of a button as long as the model is the same.

When it comes to exporting there are a couple of options, you can export the layers and textures as they are or bake the textures. I'd probably bake the textures if you want to import the model back into trueSpace.
