3dbuzz Mech project in Unreal5

Post by clintonman »

MayaFundForUnreal01.jpg

I started this project almost a month ago. Worked on it for a week, 2 weeks off and now back to it for the past couple of days. I should be done with the model in a few days. My goal with this one is to learn the modeling tools in unreal. The tool set is complete enough to make anything you want. It is super awkward to use though. Especially when modeling from image planes. The ultimate goal is to do the complete animated project all inside unreal. I don't know if it's possible or not, we'll see if I get that far.

The nice thing about unreal is that you have access to the
full Megascan library for free which I dont know if you know that
consists of the best and very expensive textures
like the one from Sindelar which was used in numerous
international movies ! He also in the meantime happens to
be a good friend of mine since I visited one of his
workshops !
The fornmer site was RD Textures and it was sold to Megascan !
Since all you need is an Epic account.. !!!
Nice thing is that Unreal has a wonderfull realtime engine
and the now free Vue Stream has an Unreal Engine plugin and
therefore is integrated much like Carbon scatter was before !
Nothing against free is there !!! :bananaclaus:

Good to see you doing a 3D project Clintonman. You're always working on TS and not getting to model for fun or do a whole project.

@RAYMAN, Vue has an Unreal plugin. Didn't know that.

@Finis, I know, I never get to have fun! , but yeah, I'm looking forward to using 3D instead of mostly coding tools for 3D.

Alright. The model is done. The only tool that was completely missing from Unreal was using curves to create geometry. Fortunately, the curve shapes the tutorial used were based on circles so I was able to work around it by connecting toruses(tori?) um, more than one torus, meshes together.

The Unreal Modeling tools are in incomplete Beta state and based on this experience I won't be using it as my main modeler.

Next up is the shading and texturing lessons.

Started the UV mapping and texturing. It took a really long time to figure out how to do some UV in Unreal. The 30 min tutorial took about 3 hours with most of that time looking for and trying out the tools to see what works for me. Seems to be the same state as the modeling tools. There's a lot in there but not quite ready/complete. The next UV section should be much easier/faster now that I have a workflow developed for it.

Things are going more smoothly now that I have an idea of how to use the Unreal UV tools. The workflow still feels awkward to me. It gets the job done, so that's all that really matters.

First image shows the result of the cockpit texturing video and the second is the cannon.

I think I forgot to mention I'm following an old video tutorial for Maya, version 5 I think.

Great!
How does this Mech compare to your other one?
I think the UV is different?

There is no difference except that it's created inside the Unreal engine.
