Remove the ts6.6 forum

Post by compPanda »

Hi

I would like to argument that we delete and removes the ts6.6 forum on this site.

The reason for this is:
*) there is already many subforums. More forums also mean that it is harder to know where to post and you have to check more places to follow discussions
*) it is unsure if you should post a question regarding ts6.6 in the ts6.6 forum or if it perhaps is a general question and should be posted in another forum

My suggestion is that the ts6.6 forum is scrapped and all ts6.6 discussion happen in the other forums. You can simply state that it is a ts6.6 question in the text to make that clear.

That is my humble opinion. :)
Thanks

I hope you also posted this in the 6.6 subforum.
I'm joking, of course.

PS. We just got finished setting up the 6.x subforum, now you want to take it out!?

The better to do now is: Create a Poll
Even don't using 6.6 or modelside much, I think that is good to have a section just for T 6.6, to when I'm looking for something for it, I easily find. But I don't know the opinions of the other folks, so I stay neutral...

I think the real problem is not there. There are too many forums in the board index and some are not used. It would be more useful to group some. For example, bugs, tutorial, rendering, materials, script should be integrated into TechForum as Subforum (see the wip forum, it is a good example of what it is possible to do, useful for long project).

You're about two months too late for this argument. ;)

Unfortunately, all of the 6.6 subjects on other forums inevitably get hijacked by spam for other apps. I think the 6.6 forum could also be expanded for 7.6 as well, although the shared space forum is now a defacto 7.6 forum.

I think the rendering/ materials, and the tech/ bugs forum could be combined pretty easily. Apart from this, I think the topics are pretty well organized.

I aggree with Marcel, a lot fo the forums are not even used and people have problems figuring out what the correct forum to post in is.

I don't know how many post start with : "Not sure if this is the right place, please move it if it is not"

You could logically orginaize the forum into a few main categories,
Technical help
WIP's
Challenges
General Discussion
3d Programs
Etc...
then within each break it out into the seperate programs or topics.

Sort of like this whole thread should have been put in "Forum Request"...? ;)

The other side of the coin is the fact you can go directly to a Category your interested in instead of
multiple repeated mouse clicks to get back into "Challenges" for instance.
Some of these Categories were requested by you the users where they repeatedly use that area for projects. Burying it deeper wouldn't make it easier for them.

You could watch for old unused or old seldom used topics/forums and absorb them into some similar popular topic. That would eliminate the extra topics and leave the ones that are used. Then we'd have an organization that formed due to actual use. Of course the personal wip forums and such would be exempt from absorption.

True, you are never going to please everbody all the time. but to section it out to make it as logical as posible and minimize the links on the main page could make it easier for most.

Since it started on teh TS 6.6 subject, Most of the commets in that link are technical related, why not make it a sub category under technical help to get it off the main screen, and then additional subcatergories like the tutorial section, That way if someone has a technical question on VRAY and it is in the VRAY section, I know I can not help since, I have no experience with VRAY.

The reason I didn't put this in forum request is that I suspect that hardly anyone read that forum! This is the forum that people read and comment in.

Breaking individual forum segments down into "trees" doesn't work, for this reason. Pretty much all you are guaranteeing are lots of dead sub-forums.

I don't really see the problem here. Maybe some general headers would be an advantage, but I have no major issues with the forums as is. If you are worried about missing a post, just hit "view new posts", and they are all there.

And if you post in the wrong section, a mod can move it.
I think you have completely missed the point of the reason the 6.6 forum was created, which was to get truespace chatter away from other forums where users are looking forward (although imo most of the apps discussed are often more of a sideways move - you see the issue ;) ), while giving grognards like myself a place to discuss truespace without having to engage in app wars. And while many threads in the 6.6 forum have been tech related so far, it won't always be that way.

Moving forums away from the main page is death, especially for a smaller site. Unfortunately, what may work for a technical document unfortunately isn't always good for community building imo.

This my pov, anyway.

That makes sense, there is nothing more anoying than an argument about what software is better, as they all have advantages in some area. But segmenting the board as TS 6.6 loyalist and eveyone else, as you put it, can also have a negative impact. I may be misunderstanding the point of it all.. but this is what I am getting from it, I am not trying to insult anyone.

I am almost a total workSpace user and having a tS6.6 (and before) area on this site is no biggie.
I'm glad that the older version is still used and admired. It all comes down to individual taste.

I would like to spend my energy on my next project rather then Categories here. How about submitting WIPs, tutorials, OurPlace scenes, renderings, enter a challenge for once, rather then discuss this stuff?
Come on I know who the slackers are! :o ;)

Hey, I would like to point out that I have a wip and I have recently posted but no one comments on it... :(

Yes this is the Car you started a year or two ago, it is very nice.
The contrast is too much in your last post. Sorry I didn't leave a post.
Your right that we need to give you feedback.

However I wasn't talking about you. ;)

If you look at the entries, challenges, wips, it is always the same names. I would like to see beginners join in even if their new stuff is crap. They will soon get the "3D bug" that is in most of us. I am always amazed by the users who have visited here and at the Caligari site for YEARS and you still haven't seen an ounce of their work. Some don't participate AT ALL. This place is not a book it should be alive and active with participation.
I would think we would all like to discuss Graphic art software here and not just the things we ate yesterday for dinner. Show others our problems with various software, techniques, styles, show others our talents. Instead we complain.
Sorry this is way off topic but that is my view point on all this and why Categories, Libraries, styles, at this site are secondary.

Spyfrog,

I agree with you on the comments, I did comment on your WIP early, it is very clean modeling and I am looking forward to seeing it come to completion, My son really loves trains. I was not following the thread when you had it on the Calgari site, so I did not have much else to say. '

For me at least the comments/critiques on the WIP's can be very motivational and keep the project going. After staring at something for so long it is hard to see the subtle imperfections that still need atention. The comments on the WIP can definately inspire ideas, or just reinforce the belief that it is going in the right direcion. Without comments, the WIP Seems to run dry and you have to start relying on your own motivation to keep the project going, and it is easy to fall into a rutt, and go days without working.
