DARPA competition - XC2V
let me announce a designers competition created by DARPA (defence advanced research projects agency). Price is 7500 USD.
Goal is to design fast military vehicle for US army. Some technical part has already been made by Local Motors Company.
Read further instructions here:
http://www.local-motors.com/XC2V"
I think its chance to compete and show our skills. Good luck and have fun ;)

I wish I had time to participate. I'll bet that Ghost Scout can make something great for this.

Great chance to participate! The prize is a lot of money, but I guess you need some engineering knowledges.
PS: I'm unable to do it, I can't imagine myself doing anything that could actually kill or harm something even indirectly as this.

1. it does not require any engineering skill. This is the first phase - the sketch. Its about concept designing and ideas - how it should look like, what features can you think of.LeonRegis wrote:Great chance to participate! 2. This vehicle is more about saving lives than killing (and if yes, than what?). Its a light fast agile offroad vehicle, that is about to be used for fast evacuation, reconnaissance, supplying, etc. Its not a tank!
read first what it is all about, then discuss ;)

Re: DARPA competition - XC2V
Yes bitkar, I know that it will probably used to save lives, but when I read this:
There are two different mission sets that you will be designing this vehicle to take part in:
1. Combat Delivery and Evacutiation
2. Intelligence, Surveilance and Reconnaissance
Combat Delivery, I don't like that... the rest I approve. It is a more defensive combat vehicle but still a military one, it does need to kill to save...
Anyway that just me, I support anyone here that might try =)

Re: DARPA competition - XC2V
I think if someone attacks your Country you will feel different.
Not trying to start anything here but you already have stated your feelings.
Historically speaking you would have been taken over by Germany in WWII, the al-Qaida, the Vikings, Europeans against the American Indians, and on and on. Your a sitting target.
I believe in Peace like you but I'd be stupid to believe I need no Defense.
This vehicle isn't for starting wars it is for ending them.
Stop making everything sound like a personal peace mission.

Re: DARPA competition - XC2V
ok, Leon is pacifist, why not, its his opinion no matter how big "idealism" that is.
but one thing iam not sure you get - Combat delivery doesnt mean killing while making dalivery. It means to supply soldiers with what is needed and cannot be supplied from air (food, ammo, medical stuff,...). There is an example of usage to supply food for soldiers. Its just support vehicle, not combat vehicle.
btw: designing somethig that can kill = you will never design a civil car, coz car can kill. ;)

Re: DARPA competition - XC2V
for those who want to participate, I have an obj file with a help of my buddy. Here it is. Feel free to use it. Coz the IGES is a crap and almost useless for us. (also CAM apps had lots of problems)
Folowing was converted by Inventor to STL which works in tS, but I used MeshLab to make it even better ;)

Re: DARPA competition - XC2V
I know this is not a forum to discuss politics and ideas, but I just want to make clear, I'm not an unconditional pacifist, I'm a Never-Shot-First Pacifist. And yes, if terrorists, another country or anything attacks me and my country without a reasonable reason, I would feel different and fight back the most I could. Unconditional Peace is an utopia and will never be reached, so you can't be an unconditional pacifist.
I don't want to get in details, but I know that USA is at war so you might want to help your troops to win the battle, I probably would too.
I don't want to design nothing that are made to kill or support the killing of people, the problem is that human being turns everything into a weapon... so if I was like you said, I wouldn't even design a pen.
I don't want this to sound like a confrontation, just to make things clear and you don't think I'm the puffy guy that never wants to fight.

The iges format is not crap and its not useless for many of us that use Moi or Rhino.bitkar wrote:for those who want to participate, I have an obj file with a help of my buddy. Here it is. Feel free to use it. Coz the IGES is a crap and almost useless for us. (also CAM apps had lots of problems)

its a very good format.......
in fact if you have an iges of that vehicle you can export into different level of detail and polygon count !
Or did you say that model iges file was a crap ?

Re: DARPA competition - XC2V
IGES is very specific for industry and CAD. A conversion to .obj with n-gones or quad create very good model that can be used with SDS. STL model is made with triangles. It is good for a finished object with hight poly count, not for SDS or edit. If you don't need to edit the model for this challenge you can use a STL.

Re: DARPA competition - XC2V
you are right. but I meant that one exported by Local Motors, not in general. Coz truespace had big difficulties reading it and it had enormous complexity. But ok, iges export for tS is not ideal. But Pro-Engeneer and other pure CAD/CAM apps had very big, even bigger than tS, difficulties reading it. - I was asking my friends who are or are studying engineering, to convert it for me. It took two ppl with expensive professional CAD/CAM apps two hours to convert it for me. The only app that could work with this file was the Inventor. So i got the STL, that tS can read without problems (and meshlab too).RAYMAN wrote:The iges format is not crap and its not useless for many of us that use Moi or Rhino.bitkar wrote:for those who want to participate, I have an obj file with a help of my buddy. btw: IGES is quite old format, as I know. Newer and better is STEP. ;)

Re: DARPA competition - XC2V
The winner scares me... ingress and egress over a driver and passenger is convoluted at best and the idea of transporting casualties on top of each other is limiting as well.
If they plan on deploying this where there is a firefight I don't like the odds for the crew.
Tough call really because designing light vehicles for universal duty is a nutty concept to begin with.
Best all around imho is still the cranky ass wwII willys jeep that I used for recon duty. At least if you were getting shot at and wanted out you could bail in any direction and you could hide the thing in a tumbleweed. The best part was nobody I knew ever considered it a general purpose assault vehicle. We had to walk for that... lol
It is interesting to see these competitions and the outcome so anyone who is keeping their ear to the ground for this type of thing please keep posting.

Re: DARPA competition - XC2V
i like the links given here. Winner is quite interesting as a concept and that "like" entry was also very good. Verde is right. Maybe they will solve that problems later in development. But overall I like those concepts.
Btw: i thought we could make our own MMC from this as I provided tS friendly 3d model. Would be interesting to make our own competetion and see how ppl here would solve the problems and discuss it. Even no problem for local "pacifists", coz this will never be used in real ;)

Re: DARPA competition - XC2V
I think this contest was meant to explore the concept of "open" development of military systems more than to gain an actual practical design. Not that they wouldn't continue to develop a good design if this has produced one.
I see votes for the designs on the Local Motors site so I'm not sure if the winner was selected by the public or by DARPA.
I liked the Warfox as a 4 wheel drive off road vehicle. It would sell to a civilian market. For military application I saw the same thing V3rd3 did: how easy is it to get in and out of. This one has easy entry and exit. Even the enclosed version has big doors. It doesn't seem to have skid plates. I'd want that and for military use I'd want the entire underside protected like a Humvee.
This would make a good MMC. A theme of "special purpose vehicle" where each contestant picks the purpose and then designs and models the vehicle would work for everyone.
