Greetings,

I've been hearing exciting things about James Cameron's new movie "Avatar" which is due to be released on 18-Dec-09. Tonight I saw the 2 minute trailer for the first time. Wow!!! The virtual characters are amazing! Here's the Avatar movie website.

Here's a bit about the story from the IMDb:

Jake Sully (Worthington) is a a paraplegic war veteran who is brought to the planet Pandora to participate in a program designed to help him walk again. The program introduces him to his avatar, a creature whose genetics are half human and half Na'vi, a sentient humanoid race who inhabit Pandora. In time, Jake will find himself in the middle of an escalating conflict between the two races.

I'm very excited about this movie.

Seems very exciting. A'm also a BLADERUNNER fan (The last science-fiction movie with models instead of CG). I thought I saw Rutger Haur in the teaser.
It also looked as they used VUE.

I actually looked at BLADERUNNER yesterday. After 27 years and seeing it a countless times a see new things every time. Sometimes CG becomes to perfect. I sometimes prefer the old way of special effects with small models.

I'll wait until others see and review it but it looks like it could be good.

Tommy, yeah sometimes the non-cg way is still best. I wish they had made the new Star Wars movies just like they made the old ones.

I think the same way but the director did a good job with Titanic. A movie there the use of CG works very well.

Personally I want a science fiction movie has some philosophical point, something to think about, Stanley Kubricks movie "2001 a space odyssye" is a masterpiece in that sense. Others are "Solaris" and "Stalker" by Andrej Tarkovskij, Steven Soderbergs "Solaris" are not in the same class but still a very good movie, the CG are excelent. "Gattaca" by direktor Andrew Niccol is rather good. I also have a weak spot for "I robot" byAlex Proyas. Nice use of CG but it becomes to much to the end. But there is a question about when a machine becoms human and is there a danger in computerising the society?

Now I hearing that my son is looking at the movie BLADE RUNNER I belive the disc are going to be worn out.

I need to ''re-watch'' all these movies again, they are really good and deserve be watched most times is possible. I saw Blade Runner just one time, anyway is amazing. 2001 I saw 3 times but I need to see it again.

I also saw I Robot 3 times, Solaris 2 and Gattaca 1...

I went to see this movie today and have gotta say IT ROCKS!!!

The CGI is pretty flawless and it doesn't take long before you completly forget that your not watching real actors. The story is quite good too and if your a big Sci-Fi fan and into hardware, you'll be in 7th heaven.

Probably go see it again tomorrow, although probably not the 3D version again. Still a tad gimicky if you ask me. Either that or you need to be really specific where you sit when you view these things.

Anyhow, awesome movie and puts the Star Wars prequels to shame on every level. And I'm a huge, huge Star Wars fan.

Seems soooo amazing! I really need to see it.

I'll try to see the normal version (don't like this 3D tech so much), but probably they will available just the 3D one.

WAIT, how you saw it today if the release is tomorrow?

Avatar recieved it's world-wide premiere in London so the film has been out for 2 days in the UK already.

There is already talk of this being turned into a trilogy. Personaly, I can't wait.

BTW, all the CGI/SFX done by Peter Jackson's WETA Workshop for those who are fans of their work.

I can't really afford to go to the theater but I might have to see this. Some special effects deserve the big screen.

And the only session I can get is a bit late, problems, etc... ah, now is just after christimas or even just in 2010.

Hi Finis.
Do you have a 2nd run theater where you live?
Some places have a theater which shows movies at discounted rates,
after they have been out awhile.
We usually go to the Cinema Cafe here, on Tuesday nights. Shows are $1.00.
If we buy an iced tea, or anything else, we get a receipt with a phone number
for a 5 minute survey. We do the survey, and get a free movie pass. Not too bad.

Hi Froo,

We just have one theater. It has 10 screens but there is no 2nd run screen. The next town with movie theaters is 60 miles from here. Anyway, there are only cheap nights for old movies and kids movies. However, I'll look for free tickets or discounts like the survey thing. Those are around sometimes.

The Avatar movie have got rather good comments in Swedish movie critisism, so during christmas time my son and I have planned to see it. The girls in the family are not interested. They are for girl movies with lot's of romance. Nothing bad about it but it maybee shows the difference between male and female wiew of things.

Your Luck! I have a small brother and he always need to see a kids movie, so when we go to the movies I see a movie (Like avatar) and he sees another goring (Because it's for kids, but some are quite cool)

Maybe vue did some small details but I think that it haven't that capacity yet.

The whole movie was outstanding.
In fact i dont know what software that was made with.... there were about 1000 people involved..
i have seen some previews with zbrush in the background and i saw Modo.
The poll says 95 % pro so if its good enough for Terminator Salvation and Indiana Jones it could very well be.
They are very tight lipped about it... so i am looking into it. That must have been some powerfull farms they rendered that on......
I am rendering my Pandorra files to find out what brute force that must have been...

Yep maybe, but then which renderer they have used? They spent 200 millions (In David Letterman he said 500, so I'm not sure), sure they have a warehouse full of supercomputers...

I liked a lot the story, a really beautiful message. I'm wondering if it should be seen in schools, if I buy the DVD or Blu-ray in this case (What I'll try to do), I'll offer to my school.

If you go to the Weta digital application form for matte artists it says qute:"Vue experience a plus"
Its on the matte painting org page under jobs.
Weta is also one of the clients same as ILM but you have to see it differently they all have a proprietary
software pipeline and just use those applications in some pipeline they have coded by themselves.......
Even if we had the computers we couldnt do all that........
The whole thing is just crazy its another giant leap foreward in 3d !

I just got the 3D world mag and it says there that 4352 render engines were used and they were running on PR Renderman.
TGhe host application was Maya .... 34816 cores and 104 TB of ram
All in all 900 people from 46 countries........

Here sits a single person with 4 cores..... and is floored........

Just saw the movie yesterday in 3D and WOW!

The whole experience was thrilling. The sites the sounds the characters, story and plot.

It had it all for me!

There was a funny point where a fight was happening, I think between the two main characters, and the guy character was thrown in the ferns towards the audience....there was some dust and bugs kicked up after he landed. I found myself swatting at a small fly that was floating around in front of me only to realize it was in the movie. hehe

I will see it again and my wife cannot stop talking about it either..and she's hard to please! hehe

The hole family went to see AVATAR and what to say. Impressive!!! In the start it loked like a Romeo and Julia plot but it went out in a different way.

Every detail is impressive. The movements of every leaf, straw of grass and the insects in the air. I have also the same thougth: computers did this?

I saw it again and recommend for those who want to see again and for who didn't saw it yet! GO TO THE MOVIES! I saw with my mother she didn't saw it yet so I saw it again just for do company to her. And this time I looked at details better, feel the history better and start looking more to what they are saying because in the first time was just WOW it WOW that WOW the whole movie! And this time I give up my emotions better and even cried because in the first I was a little more hearthless and looked to the image and not the history. Now I also feel chills but not a sick chill, a chill of fear like (What the f*** they did???).

So I recommend, also my mom loved!

PS: And now because of it I want more to do 3D than ever!

Edit: I forgot to say that every time I watch Avatar I become Gandhi I can't see violent movies (I don't feel good as normal), I can't think in do war in games or play war games and always say think pro-peace like phrases ''There is no way to peace, peace is the way'', ''There is no military solution that didn't always end up as something worse'' or ''We share the same biology regardless of ideology''.
