Nov. 2009 MMC Robots -- Shine
He has IK arms and legs, translucent partially transparent eye shader with lights inside the eyes, multilayer paint shader, and 33 hands. I used the array tool. Now to make more items.

What a fun looking model!
I rarely see tS users utilizing the array tools , clever how you did this. (Staircases are soooo yesterday!
)
Are you planning on animation with this robot? Glad you decided to join us.
My only criticism would be his wienie feet.

Good stuff Finis. It doesn't look very threatening but maybe each one of those little ball structures is filled with a toxic gas that would kill everyone in the room...or maybe it's filled with confetti and they are rented out for birthday parties
. Either way....nice work!

Re: Nov. 2009 MMC Robots -- Shine
I'm getting frustrated. The picture is working out well but I want to pose some arms on the bots.
They have IK connections in each arm. So a combination of IK and rotating the whole arm around its axis at the main joint worked reasonably well. Except that when I saved and reloaded the scene the arm I had moved was distorted. It is the one shown here with the hand near the rectangle. More or less in the upper right. That arm should have the proportions of the others.
I should have know better than to try to use the IK system. I learned that from my Elf Animation (rant is here http://forums1.caligari.com/truespace/s ... php?t=4535" ).
Fortunately I had the foresight to make a separate working scene to avoid destruction of my stuff. I'll try once again to pose the arms. I guess I could decompose the bot or at least the arms that need moving and just move them as objects but I'm tired of this.
On second thought, I can make a good image without posing the bots. I think I'll just go with that.
I did get decent piles using workspace physics and Mesh Collapse to de-physics and de-animate them.
Since I have no money Blender is the only other option for me. When is the official release of its new interface? Has anyone tired it or a beta release?

The oficial release I can not find anywhere. They originally Intended for October. There is a website with a lot of 2.5 builds but nothing completed.
I think it would look good as is , no pose needed.

Rendering now.
I had to remove the sky sphere I added. It was for things to have something to reflect. That really slowed down the render. Removed it and an estimated 1 hour 45 minutes became 10 minutes.

Re: Nov. 2009 MMC Robots -- Shine
Here it is!
There may be as much work in Paint Shop as in TS.
About 150K polys. HDRI for general illumination, infinite lights for key and fill, and two local lights for the faces. The eyes have lights inside them too.
The dirt on the table is a plane with a round gradient transparency and rust texture. The plane is just above the table.
----
Things that need to be improved.
The lighting needs work but there is no time for that. After the MMC I'll do something about the shadows around the Shine box and bowl.
The Shine box is too bright on top. Lighting and the box has luminance and too much of it. No time for lighting but I might get to the luminance.
What do you think about SmileBot's eyes? I think he looks worried more than happy. FrownBot's eyes look right. I hope to change the expression by rotating the eyes so what do you think would give him a happy look? What about round eyes?
I think it needs something along the top. Text?
Anything else that would be quick to fix? I'll try one more render if so. Then that one or this one will be the MMC entry.
I'm still interested in improving this beyond the MMC so advice always welcome.

Good work there, I liked the concept too. Really funny! The robot seems so friendly, again, good work!

I'll go with this one for the MMC but still improve it later. Suggestions welcome.
The box side panel says stuff like this:
Ingredients
Things 7385 more things
Items and Tasties 8569
Assorted powders 345
Some liquids 345
Gasses as well 4986

Nice work, I can just imagine these 2 characters being on a childrens TV series of some kind. A really good render too with lots of interesting surfaces and textures to look at. Good luck with the vote.

Re: Nov. 2009 MMC Robots -- Shine
That is absolutely fantastic!!! Great work.
My two cents:
1) Darken the background a little bit. I think it is drawing the eye away from the characters. Especially the happy one.
2) Frowny robot looks scared instead of sad; not that it is a bad thing but if you want sad then I think you need to curl the ends of the mouth down a little bit more. It looks pretty straight.
3) Maybe add a jug of motor oil or some other lubricant to simulate the milk that they use in their "cereal"
4) Maybe have one or more of frowny robots arms either bent or missing. That thing has been through hell, maybe it should be worse for wear

Re: Nov. 2009 MMC Robots -- Shine
Thanks everyone.
BB: Children's TV. Children's stories would be great for animations with them.
T: Good point about the background. I'll change that.
FrownBot does look scared. Of course, he is about to eat rusty nails. He is supposed to look disappointed or sad. I'll work on his mouth and both bot's eyes. I think SmileBot's eyes look worried.
They do have oil for milk! I was going to add oil jugs but ran out of time. I'll add them. FrownBot's brake drum has black used oil and SmileBot's bowl has brown new oil.
I agree, FrownBot needs damage and his arms in disarray while SmileBot's are orderly. They are IK rigged but I wrote earlier of trouble with that. So posing the arms will wait for some other software or maybe I'll un-IK them and just move the parts around.
